Received a nice E-mail from R.M.Abell who used to live on Big Creek in the early 1940s.This is what he had to say:
"As one who lived on Big Creek in the early 1940s, I looked for place names that were familiar to me then. A couple I noted as missing:
McElroy Gap (on highway 7, right where the road down to Big Creek turns off.) Coppers Bluff (near the head of Big Creek, in 1940 was the site of an abandoned school building bearing the same name, bluff was right behind the schoolhouse). Other school houses downstream on Big Creek were Redrock (just downstream from Ira Cooper's store and home, across the creek from Snake Cooper's home. A white painted frame building, which long ago burned. Log Hall, still further downstream, and beyond it, Vendor. A stone school built by the WPA in the 30's, not very old at all, as I remember.
This is probably information you already have, however have fond memories of the area, and the Burdines, Ewings, Browns (including Cornelious Brown who built a home under the rim rock of the mountain in front of our home on the creek)Coopers, Collins, Smiths, Shatswells, Stars, and others whose names now escape me. It was a wonderful place in the 1940s.
Best regards
R.M.Abell
