Photograph of John C. Morgart and family courtesy of William Herbert Leonard. ----- John Morgart was born on a farm near Rainsburg in Colerain Township, Bedford County, PA in 1863. Rainsburg is located in a fertile valley between Evitts Mountain and Tussey Mountain a few miles east of U.S. route 220 north of Cumberland, MD and south of Bedford, PA. John Morgart moved to nearby Cumberland, MD where he owned and operated the Cumberland Produce Company, a wholesale produce business located on South Center Street, that shipped fresh fruit and vegetables between Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Cumberland. Once a very successful business, it failed financially during the great depression of 1929 - 1934. John and Emma Morgart lived on Baltimore Avenue at the corner of Bellevue Street in Cumberland before building a large and impressive brick home at 12 Decatur Street about 1914 - 1915. The Decatur Street home was lost due to debt after John's death in 1937. John and Emma Morgart are buried in the Mausoleum in Rose Hill Cemetery in Cumberland. John and Emma Morgart's children were: Ralph Calvin, b. Aug 5, 1891, d. Oct 1980; Lulu Elizabeth, b. Oct 5, 1894, d. Feb 1993; and Francis Earl, b. Oct 29, 1901, d. Morgart John C. Morgart, a native of Bedford County, died Aug. 18 at his home in Cumberland, aged 74. A son of Samuel and Sarah Morgart, he went to Cumberland when a young man and of late years had been in the produce business. His wife, two sons and a daughter survive; also three brothers and a sister, Philip and Mary of Bedford; Frank of Elmira, N.Y.; and Ross of Connellsville. • Newspaper article: The Bedford Gazette, 22 Nov 1912, Bedford, Bedford, Pennsylvania. 34 Hunter Shot- On Monday a party of Cumberland hunters came to the home of Arthur Rose and went to Martin Hill for a deer hunt. They located several deer and John C. Morgart, proprietor of the Cumberland Produce Company, undertook to drive them where the others might get a shot. The other members of the party shot, bringing down a fine buck, but one of the bullets penetrated a leg of Mr. Morgart above the knee. He was removed to a farm house on an improvised stretcher and medical aid was rendered by Dr. Moore of Centreville, after which he was removed to the Western Maryland Hospital. His wound is not considered dangerous. The other members of the party returned Tuesday for their game.
• Obituary, Aug 1937, Cumberland, Allegany, Maryland. 80 John C. Morgart John C. Morgart, proprietor of the Cumberland Produce company on South Centre street, died Aug. 18th at 3:30 p. m., at his home, 12 Decatur street, Cumberland, Md., following an illness of four months. He was seventy-four years old. Mr. Morgart was born in Bedford county and resided forty six years in Cumberland, forty of which were spent in the produce business. He was a son of Samuel and Sara Morgart. His widow, Mrs. Emma E. Morgart, survives. along with two sons, Ralph C., of Cumberland, and Francis E., of Wilkinsburg, Pa., and a daughter, Mrs. Carl Leonard, of 12 Decanter Street, Cumberland. He also leaves three brothers, Frank, of Elmira, N. Y.; Ross, of Connelleville, Pa., and Philip, of Bedford, Pa., and a sister, Miss Mary Morgart, of Bedford, and four grandchildren.
• Obituary: The Daily Courier, 19 Aug 1937, Connellsville, Fayette, Pennsylvania. 34 John C. Morgart, 74 years old brother of Ross Morgart of Connellsville died Tuesday at his home at Cumberland following an illness of four months. He was in the produce business at Cumberland for fourty years.
