Samuel was a school teacher in early life. A Civil War veteran with Company "K" 55th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was visiting his cousin's home in Danville at the time he took sick and died of apoplexic seizure.

Samuel remarried Anna Amelia Beam and of this union a son, Clarence Virgil was born.
