bullet  General Notes:

Maria Morgret Palmer was a great reader and knew many hymns and poems, which she had committed to memory, some of which she sang and repeated on her death bed.

The Palmer home under her care was one of the most widely known in the entire county for its genial hospitality. For many years it was the social and intellectual the religious center of the entire community. It became a headquarters for visitors, students, teachers and superintendents and over all this gracious Christian Lady presided, as a loving mother and kind friend, always the home was crowded during summer school, examinations or institutes.

THE FULTON DEMOCRAT, McConnellsburg, Pa. - Thursday, February 12, 1925

PALMER - Mrs. Maria Palmer, widow of the late Thomas R. Palmer, died at the Palmer homestead, now occupied by her youngest son, Dr. J. J. Palmer, February 6, 1925. Born December 27, 1837, Mrs. Palmer was aged 87 years, 1 month and 10 days. She was a daugher of the late Job Morgret and Hannah Ford Morgret. She was born and grew to womanhood on the farm now occupied by Eli Peck.
She was married to Thomas R. Palmer in 1856. When the Civil War broke out her husband enlisted in the Union Army, leaving her at home with two children, one of them only 13 months old.
six children were the fruit of this marriage, viz: Mrs. Francis Hart, of Needmore; Mrs. Hattie Dixon, of Chambersburg; Mrs. Jefferson Mellott, near Needmore; Mrs. Joseph Lake, of Illinois; Prof. B. N. Palmer, of Portage, Pa., and Dr. J. J. Palmer, of near Needmore, who occupies the old Palmer homestead. Each and all have lost a Christian mother, a wise Counsellor and a safe guide. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, to mourn their great loss.
Mrs. Palmer was a loyal consistent Christian lady, a member of the baptist church for 38 years. She was a great reader and knew many hymns and poems, which she had committed to memory, some of which she sang and repeated on her death bead.
The Palmer home under her care was one of the most widely known in the entire county for its genial hospitality. For many years ot was the social and intellectual (and I think I may truthfully ad) the religious center of the entire community. It became a headquarters for visitors, students, teachers and superintendents and over all this gracious Christian lady presided, as a loving mother and kind friend, always the home was crowded during summer school, examinations or institutes.
The writer knows whereof he writes, for friendships were former at that home and with members of that family that only death can sever. He often told one member that the inspiration received there carried him for against hard head winds.
She was foremost in all forms of church work until the infirmities of age prevented. The children and grandchildren have lost a loving mother, the church one of its grandest characters and all she knew have lost a friend.
God rest her mortal remains. Her example will live forever. Her sainted soul has crossed the Silent River, and is now reunited with the live of her youth. She cared for many aged and infirm in her time, all with loving care.
Funeral services, Sideling Hill Baptist church, Monday, February 9 conducted by her pastor, Rev. Funk of Needmore, assisted by Rev. Miller of Washington, D. C.. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

God rest thee sainted mother,
Thy work on earth is done,
God called not another
Heavenly joy is begun.

They weary journey over,
"Mid heavenly joys thou art,
Thy youthful, husband, lover
Hath met thy faithful heart.
