Downs, Mehitable - Married Eleazer Luce, NOT James Reeve

The Downs Family of Long Island, Arthur Channing Downs, 1959, indicates Mehitable Downs, daughter of David and Elizabeth (Paine) Downs, married William Reeve as his second wife. (Pg 14, No 112a)

This is doubtful. Both the Luce and Hallock Genealogies suggest this Mehetable married Eleazer Luce about 1780, and died Aug 10, 1806, buried Aquebogue Cemetery. The birth date of the Mehetable, second wife of Deacon James Reeve, is known, and is later than the baptism of Mehetable, daughter of David, by about 10 years.

The Mattitituck Parish Records, pg 383, have this entry for this Mehetable, commentary in brackets

Mehetable W. Reeve, Relict of Deacon James, [Nee Downs], died 12/19/1865, age 92-2-7.
This calculates to a date of birth of Oct 12, 1773.

David and Elizabeth (Paine) Downs were married Jan 10, 1760 (Salmon Records). Two daughters of David and Elizabeth Downs were baptized Aug 18, 1765: Mehitable and Elizabeth.

Thus, the daughter named Mehetable (of Daniel and Elizabeth (Paine) Downs) was born too early to be the wife of James Reeve.

It is possible that a daughter of David and Elizabeth (Paine) Downs could have died and a later Mehetable born, circa 1773, but that would disqualify her from being a wife of Eleazer Luce, which it would appear she was until 1793.

Conclusion:

Mehetable Downs, daughter of David and Elizabeth (Paine) Downs, born 1760-1765, married about 1780, Eleazer Luce, died 08/10/1806, buried Aquebogue.

Deacon James Reeve did, indeed, marry a Mehetable Downs Sep 18, 1794; she was born 10/12/1773, and died, age 92-2-7, on 12/19/1865, buried Mattituck - Could she be the daughter of James & Mehetable (Wells) Downs?

Could the Mehetable Downs who married James Reeve on Sep 18, 1794 (SR), be the daughter of James and Mehetable (Wells) Downs?

Children from this couple were recorded as born or baptized between 1797-1809, from Mattituck baptism or death records. Craven (History of Mattituck) reveals this wife used the middle initial "W." on her headstone, which could stand for Wells. Her headstone indicates she was born 12 Oct 1773 (died 12/19/1865, age 92-2-7).

James Downs, in his 1784 will, leaves a legacy to a daughter named Mehitable. The "Downs Family" by Arthur Channing Downs, shows this daughter and nothing further about her.

I have demonstrated above that this marriage does not belong to the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Paine) Downs. See above.

Conclusion

The Mehitable Downs mentioned in the 1784 will of James Downs seems to be the best fit of the known Mehitable Downs that I have reviewed in the Southold / Riverhead area to be the wife of James Reeve, but without the "smoking gun" evidence to confirm that conclusion. I categorize her as "likely" to be the wife of James Reeve.
