| A source for STEPNELL is Ron Stepnell <r.stepnell@homeloanadvice.com.au> (February 2005). Joseph went to Tasmania at an early age with his elder brother John probably with their Uncle Thomas or else met up with him in Tasmania.4 He served with the 3rd Contingent of the 1st Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen which departed on 26th April, 1900 on troopship Manhattan. While the contingent returned returned on 14th June, 1901, he was one of about 20 men invalided back to Tasmania before the main body, either for injuries or illness- mostly typhoid. He reached the rank of Corporal, no other service details are known of.4 The photo was taken in Jan, 1905 while he was a Constable in the Police at Queenstown, Tas.4 He married Sarah Tobin on / /1904 at Launceston. At this stage, only one child is known of, Joseph William. They had an A Model Ford. According the 1937 Electoral Roll, they were living at 64 Tamar Street, Launceston (Bass, Launceston North). A funeral notice in 1938 in the “Examiner” newspaper referred to Sarah Tobins' mother passing away at her daughters address of 37 Howick Street, Launceston. She was living at 21 Cameron Street, Launceston in 1954, when Joseph W. was discharged from the Army. Sarah lived in Launceston until she died on Oct 1971 and was interred at Carr Villa Cemetery in Launceston. At some stage during the '30s Joseph Snr & Joseph W traveled to W.A, presumably due to the depression. They were both living in Coolgardie when Joseph. W enlisted in the 2nd AIF in 1940. By that time Joseph Snr was 63 and may never went back to Tasmania. While no record of his death has been located in the W.A. Births, Deaths & Marriages registry, Joseph W. changed his NOK details back to Sarah in Oct 1948 presumably following his fathers' death, as he would then have been over 70. 4 | ||||||||||||
