| Notes for Joseph ELLIS | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Christening is on IGI: Batch C034202. The following is from Mike Harper by email (September 2003) <MikeHarp@aol.com>: Great grandmother Ann Ellis came from a family of brewers in Lincoln. Her daughter Mary Lavina Ellis was born in Lincoln Workhouse in 1864, and no father appears on the birth certificate. Workhouse admission and discharge records for that period are not available. Neither Ann nor Mary Lavina appear in Lincoln at the 1871 census, and so far, we have no proof of Ann’s identity. She was probably daughter of Joseph Ellis, born 1802 in W ellingore. A search of the 1861 census showed that the Ellis brewers were mostly brothers who were born in Wellingore, Lincolnshire between 1800 and 1816, and some of their sons. Although they were prosperous they owned few of the numerous hotels and inns. The relevant Ellis men, appearing in the 1861 census, were: birth christening burial occupation father mother spouse Joseph Ellis 12 Mar 1802 14 Mar 1802 23 Feb 1864 car agent, bookkeeper Joseph Ellis Alice Morton Ann Smith Richard Ellis 28 Nov 1804 2 Dec 1804 8 Jul 1875 Brewer and Publican, music teacher Joseph Ellis Alice Morton Caroline William Ellis 1814 8 May 1814 3 Apr 1875 Licensed victualler and Brewer Joseph Ellis Alice Morton Mary Thomas Ellis 1815 8 Oct 1815 6 Apr 1887 Beer seller Joseph Ellis Alice Morton Elizabeth Baldock There were two other brothers and about eight sisters John 3 Nov 1805 Joseph Ellis Alice Morton Charles 25 Jan 1807 31 Jan 1891 North Devonshire Regiment of Foot Joseph Ellis Alice Morton Ellis Commercial Activity Morris and Company’s 1863 Commercial Directory of Lincoln lists the residents and their trades.
