Volume 9 letter 2
Donn E. Wagner, Editor - 5245 Walton Street, Long Beach, CA 90815 - (213) 421-9686
The PANGBURN LETTER is published at the cost of the Editor. The intent is non-profit and is to be used to disseminate information to others interested in the Pangburn lines. This publication will print data submitted by anyone who has Pangburn information. Perhaps by sharing with each other, we will be able to put together the Pangburn story.

Another success story to report -
We published a request from Lucy Birch (VoL 3, No. 1, pg 8 Apr 1985) for information on Grace E. Pangburn / John Henry Hoyt
Now that was 6 years ago and I'm sure that Lucy thought we forgot about her and that no one would come forward to offer any help. but - -recently we received this letter.
Grace E. Hoyt Bower writes.
I am responding to a request listed in Vol. # 3 page 8, re: John Henry Hoyt/Grace E. Pangburn, my grandparents.
I am the daughter of Basil Leroy Hoyt and Aunt Clara married Jack Birch, I guess that makes Lucy Birch and I , kin.
I have only been searching since Feb. of this year. My info is as follows: GraceE. Hoyt died in Waterbury, CT April 26,1920 from Acute Pleurisy and Bronchial Pneumonia. She was ill about 10 days. She is buried in Old Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterbury, with her husband She was born in West Sand Lake, NY on May 27, 187 1. Father was Joshua Pangburn of NY and mother was Maria Emery of ---- ? This information is on her death certificate.
I found Joshua Pangburn on the 1850 census at age 33, in the Auburn State Prison, he was there since 1847 for burglary and it also listed he had no trade.
I found a Grace Pangborn age 10 listed on the NY 1880 Soundex as being the adopted daughter of a Daniel or David Mou----on. Her birthplace was Schoharie Co., NY
I found Joshua again through the town Historian in Town of Sand Lake, NY, Madolyn V. Carpenter. She had some old Nassau. NY Cemetery records listing. PANGBURN Joshua, Pvt. F. Co. 18 NY Vol., died Jan 16, 188 1, age 69 (also see Hall)??? Mrs. Carperter said the cemetery is in the town of Nassau, not Sand Lake where I was searching. It is near Hoag's Corners.
I have had no luck so far with Maria Emery.
We forwarded this material to Lucy Birch and received the following answer from her in one of those ironies of the genealogical world, Grace Hoyt Bower obtained a death certificate this year for Grace Pangbum Hoyt who died in 1920 in Waterbury, Connecticut I have in my records a note from Waterbury (about 1984) stating they could find no record of Grace Pangburn Hoyt's s death in 1920. This failure led to my contact with you and your publication of my appeal for information in the April 1985 Pangburn Letter.
I have now received my own copy of Grace Pangburn Hoyt's death certificate. It gives her father's name as Joshua Pangburn and her mother's name as Maria Emery. Armed with this information, I went back through your Pangburn Letters. In the March 1988 issue on page 8. you have information on a Joshua Pangburn (part of Viola Pangburn Robert's material on Pangborn's in the Civil War), His wife's name is written as Miry Emory, and the second daughter is Gracie (an easy corruption from Grace E!) with the birthdate of my Grace Pangburn Hoyt
Needless to say, I am very excited about this information.
Since this exchange of correspondence and addresses, we received the following letter from Grace E. Hoyt , Bower
I can't thank you and Alice enough for your kindness in calling me with the address of Lucy Birch, her husband and I are cousins. We have never met We are both however doing Pangburn research on our common ancestry, and she has been a great help. I in turn have exchanged my limited info as well.
Well on to some new information. This all comes from the Pension Records established when my Great Grandmother Maria Emory, Pangburn first applied on Sept. 20, 1888. She states she is 56 years old and the widow of Joshua Pangburn. The date of his death is Jan. 16,1882 in Nassau, NY. He enlisted on Dec. 9, 186 1. He was in Co. F 18 th N.Y. Volunteers (Infantry) in the war of the rebellion He contracted chronic diarrhea from which he died years later. He and Maria Emory were married ,,, Feb. 11, 1860 in Nassau, NY by the Rev. Ambler. Joshua had previously been married to Mary ----- who died a violent death in Coxsockie Landing, in Green Co. New York in Feb. 1846. Joshua was held for murder. however. there was no proof and he was released. A daughter, Charlotte E. Pangburn is mentioned. her year of birth was 1837. She married Wm. H. Hall in N. Y. in the year 1859 and had been married to him for thirty years when she gave information in this Pension File. Maria had been married previously as well - to Joseph Emory who died in the winter of 185 8 in N,Y. Joshua was discharged (disabled) due to his chronic illness, in July 1862. And for a time he and Maria lived with Charlotte and her husband in Nassau. They had two children. Mary L born on Jan. 4, 1867 and my Grandmother Grace Eluria born on May 27,1872 in West Sand Lake, NY. I do not know the maiden name of Great Grandmother Maria, only the name of her first husband Joseph Emory. Perhaps someone out there can help.

(Continued from Page 1)
The only other information gleaned from the Pension File is that 'Maria received an $8.00 payment on March4, 1900. And said payment stopped because they were notified of her death. She had been living on 39 North Street (I believe it was North Main Street. as the family had lived there for years). I visited the home there as a very little girl, in Waterbury, Conn. The date I listed was May 31, 1900. Her age was 68. The year of birth I don't know where she was born. I have come to a dead end. I sure could use any bits and pieces anyone might have.
Well we've learned two lessons from this exchange of letters
First - never give up hope
Second - if the Courthouse says they don't have the record -try again????

Jacquelyn Youse Whetro needs your help in locating information on her ancestor She writes.,
Thanks so much for your letter and copy of the Pangburn Letter.
I haven't thought of the Pangborne name for a few years until you jogged my memory. I wrote a family history with a cousin in 1981 titled Youse Family Story and tried to find more information on the above then but never did.

Laura was the wife of Frank Pangborne and all the information I have says she lived in Washington, D.C. and died in 1960. 1 do have a family photo of Laura and Frank.
Laura was the daughter of Winfield E. and Emma Esther (LORAH) SADDORIS and was one of four children. The family lived in the Whitehouse and Waterville areas near to Toledo, Ohio. It would be great if you have information on them for me. Okay everyone, start checking your records. Do you have anything on Frank and Laura Pangborne?????

DAVID DAILOR has joined our ranks of Pangburn researchers. He writes.
I am a gggggg. grandson of Richard Pangburn who married Cathyntje Van Etten. My line comes through their son Benjamin born 24 Feb. 1777 who married Maria Wrooman on 12 Aug. 1798. Their daughter Levyne Wyntje Pangburn married Lucas Van Valkenburg in 1822.
David has sent a copy of a letter from Charlotte Luck-hurst to Annie Elizabeth Van Valkenburg McLean. He states they are both grand-daughters of Lucas Van Valkenburg and Levyne Wyntje Pangburn. He also states that apparently, after Lucas died, Levyne remarried a man named McKinney and had several, children. She is referred to in this letter as Grandma McKinney.
4416 Hulett St., Schenectady, NY
April, 21, 1913
My Dear Cousin,
I am sure you will be surprised to get this letter but I trust it will not be unwelcome. I will first tell you who I am. I am the eldest daughter of Eliza Van Valkenburg, your father's sister. My mother died when I was less than twelve years old and I was brought up away from my relatives, and until I was a young lady knew nothing of the relatives in Schenectady. Then I visited here several times and later was married to Wm. Wallace Luckhurst third son of Helen McKinney (she was half sister to your father) and George T. Luckhurst.
I had always been very anxious to know more of my mother's people, but the other members of the family were not in the least interested, not even to the point of keeping any records. So when I asked questions I was put off from time to time and discouraged. Told no records had been kept and that I would be unable to trace my ancestry and that it was unimportant? My husband and I never lived here after we were married until about five years ago when his mother died and his interests brought him here. It was then that some old letters came to me to care for and among them I found the letter written by your mother to Grandma McKinney at the time your father died As soon as we located permanently here I decided, if possible, to work out the genealogy of my mother's family and began on your line with letter and wrote to the address given in that. Of course it was returned as were many others written to different addresses. I finally wrote the War Department but they knew nothing of the family since 1872 but gave the address at that time. After many letters I wrote to Amboy, Wis. and the letter was returned marked "All Dead". Well this convinced me they had at one time lived there and wrote the P.M. a personal letter saying it was an important matter and that I would be grateful if he could locate any member of the family. After a time he sent me the address of Mrs. Potter at Elkhorn. Then I wrote her and she recently sent me the address of both you and your sister.
Uncle John, your father's eldest brother is still alive and a remarkable man for one of his age, 89 last Mar. He is living in Wolcott and last fall when I visited him showed me a splendid garden that he had made and cared for himself. His wife, Aunt Margaret, died some years ago and he has a second wife. live in a small home all by themselves.. Aunt Lavina, your father's youngest half sister her name was McKinney) is Still alive and lives next door to me here. She is a widow and one of her sons with his family lives with her.
So only the eldest and the youngest of the family are now alive. The others are all gone.
Do you remember my mother? She visited your home when you were a little girl. Have you any picture of her? I have one of your father and mother taken about the time they were married and think they were a splendid looking couple. Have you a copy of that? Your Mother has on a bonnet with trimming about the ears and broad ribbon ties. She has on a dark shawl that clings so close I think it must be silk. She also has mitts on her hands.
Uncle Benj. looks very trim and quite like a minister ? He has on a dark suit and what looks like a satin vest with a broad blk neck scarf tied high under his chin.
I have devoted a great part of my time for the past three years to my work on the genealogy for I have been alone and very lonely and it has been a great comfort to me. My husband only survived his mother about two years and we had no family so I am now all alone.
I have collected from public records (State, County, Church and Cemetery) and from private records sufficient material to establish the complete genealogy of many lines of the family in America as far back as 1644 and much of the history is very interesting and there is much to be proud.
They were very prominent in the early history of the country and took an active part in every war that this country has ever had. A Van Valkenburg was one of the first six gunners ever appointed in this country for the protection of Fort Orange (now Albany) long before there was ever an organized regiment
