The PANGBURN LETTER is published at the cost of the Editor. The intent is non-profit and is to be used to disseminate information to others interested in the Pangburn lines. This publication will Print data submitted by anyone who has Pangburn information. Perhaps by sharing with each other, we will be able to put together the Pangburn story.

Nancy Smith is still looking for her elusive ancestor, SAMUEL PANGB URN who married Eliza Dobson. Her research has taken her to many new areas and she is willing to share her "finds" with you - - including information on collateral lines. These are extracts from three of her latest letters.

" The Haywards also came from Addison Co. VT to Essex Co. NY. Like the Pangburns, there was a general migration pattern from Essex area to St Lawrence Co. in early 1800's. This week I had a chance to do a little record searching in Essex Co. Found land transactions for Joseph Pangburn and his wife 'Basheba' to Timothy and Thadeus Pangborn in 1807. Joseph had earlier one in 1800, too. Also, in 1815 John Pangbourn and his wife Miranda sold land. The only probate data was on David Pangborn filed 21 Feb. 1817. He died intestate and had guardians approved for Oliver, Elijah, Jason and Myron his sons. The first two were over 14 and under 2 1, the last two were under 14 (as of 2 April 1817). The guardians were Azor and Anna Busco/Brusco/Rusco -- no relationship stated.

"The index to Miscellaneous Papers filed was loaded with Pangborns! 29 entries 1799-1805 (out of 46 total). For warrants, complaints, judgements, pleas, etc. Several different plaintiffs so apparently their difficulties weren't limited to one person or so. I haven't checked it all out but the 21 read were for $183.22 debt and the other for $100.00 damages. The ones involved were John, John Jr., Timothy, Samuel, and Jos. with John being the most frequent. I haven't found any after 1805 so far, and with my wild imagination think he left Essex then for St. Lawrence to get away from his legal problems and money shortages. I hate to spend more time in Essex until I know if that John is the St Lawrence John and if he really is my Samuel's father. Obviously the Essex John and Samuel Pangborn were acquainted and probably related so I wonder if this is the origin of my Samuel's name selection?''

"Philip Bedient' s info said that John Pangborn's s father was born in NY and his mother was from CT. It would seem since John was born 1815 the father was born at least 1790 and if the father was the same man as Samuel and Sterline s father, I think he would be born more like 1770 or so. Now VT was not a state until 1790, and the land was referred to by various names, including New York. So maybe Philip's John was born in present day VT but considered it NY. In the 1790 VT census there is Peter Pangman in Highgate, Chittenden Co., VT, one of 17 families. It is right on the Canadian border. The family was 1 male over 16, 4 males under 16, and 3 females. I wonder if Peter Pangman is the grandfather of Philip Bedient! s John and my Samuel and Thurza Gamble's Sterling. Also in Chittenden Co. in Fairfield was Jesse Pangbowen; 2 males over 16; maybe 2 brothers and oldest sons of Peter? I am awaiting a photocopy of VT 1800 census to see which Pangburns are in the area. I hope to find some unless they all were in Canada already. It is tempting to think that Peter Pangman may be affiliated with the line of Peter C. Brunsdale? His Peter, b. 1744 and married c. 1790, had time for a whole other family before heading to Manitoba'

I found a few Sterling families in 1790 VT. A Joseph Sterling was in Woodstock which was settled by a lot of CT folks. Sterlings are not in NY till later. I'd really be all set if a Sterling girt from CT married a Pangman!"

I wrote to Peter Brunsdale. That Peter Pangman in High-gate, VT 1790 was gone by 1800 (to Canada?). I'm leaning to the idea that ultimately the Canadian Pangbuns come from Stephen and Joanne (Tuttle) Pangborn via Timothy and his Loyalist sons. I have read some of the military lists of Noah and Stephen but got little genealogical data, but interesting details about wounds, capture, L.I. service. The Loyalists and the German Mercenary soldiers were given land in eastern Ontario along the St. Lawrence River and the north shore of Lake Ontario. This may account for the mingling of German ancestry and places them in the areas where I'm finding them. I have written a woman who specializes in the German Mercenary aspect to see what light she can shed on the situation in general and in particular.

Last weekend I went to a Genealogical Conference in Ottawa, Canada. I found out that Elizabeth Pangburn, dau of Samuel married Abram Miller. Have gravestone inscriptions. Their dau. was Louisa Miller Bayes who was the lady that Marsha Barnes' grandmother visited in Alymer, Ont. as a child. Marsha didn't  know the connection but now I know Louisa and Samuel B. Pangburn were 1st cousins. I am guessing that the visit may have occurred in 1929 to go to the funeral of Elizabeth Miller, Samuel's aunt. In the 1881 census, Starling Pangburn was living with Abram, Elizabeih and Louisa Milier. (Starlitig father of Samuel B.) Now I know the spouses of all Samuel and Eliza Dobson Pangburn's children except Martha. And I know most of their grandchildren. Just can't pin down their death date and place, but I will eventually!

(Continued from Page 1)

I was able to go through St. Lawrence Co. Very poor records, begin in 1850. Saw the High Street Cemetery for myself in Norfolk and took a photo of the Pangborn monument. The tall one was as recorded by the American Legion and quoted by Edna Finn in the Pangburn Letter, Vol. 5, No. 2, p. 4 except for one side which lists the young children of Zebina and Maria Pangborn. It actually reads, "Benjamin, died at Peacham, VT, ae. 2 mos.; Frederick T, died at Norfolk NY, ae I yr and 6 mos; also an infant son. " That is 3 babies rather than the way the Legion copied it. A small stone right next to the big one was illegible. It may have been another Frederick Pangborn who was an 1812 veteran, but couldn't tell.

Also in Ottawa saw an extract of marriage bond for Naomi Pangburn (dau of Beebee and Susan Knapp) and Elijah Chamberlain in 1829 in Leeds Co. (directly opposite St. Lawrence Co., NY). Another marriage bond was for Levi Hill, Carpenter and Ruby Pangburn, Spinster, both of Hamilton. Gore Dist. Bondsmen: Alexander K. McKenzie, Gentleman and Henry Darby, Tanner, both of Hamilton. I 1 Oct. 1833 at Hamilton. Who is she?

The Marsh family turns up regularly so Shirley Wainright's line no doubt fits somehow. In Surrogate Court Index saw mention of James Pangborn, the younger, Livingston, MI and Ridgetown, Ont, 1875. Interesting that he died in Michigan and his probate data in Ontario - must be land? He was son of James and Elizabeth Marsh Pangborn. Also found Surrogate Index for Amelia Pangborn of Orford, KentCo., Ontario 1899. She was widow of Hiram - and my Samuel was witness at their marriage. All this on microfilm in Toronto which won't circulate on interlibrary loan! Another marriage of this general "tribe" was: William L. Scott, 37, Pennsylvania, Eng, son of John and Elizabeth (Loneday) Scott, married 19 Feb 1867 Nancy Pangborn, 23, SL Mary's (Perth Co., Ont), dau of Isaac and Elizabeth (Dawson) Pangborn. Isaac and James seem to be affiliated somehow.

Found in 187 1 Kent Co., Ont. Census Index - Alanson Pangburn, b. US, 71 yr., farmer, Germ. origin in Orford."

ED NOTE.- Looks like Nancy leaves no stone unturned or no book unopened when she is searching for her ancestors.!!!

Lamora Magdaleno has shared some info with us - she wrote to the Onandaga County Courthouse to see if they had any land records on Ziba and Hannah Pangborn married in Vermont 1811 - went to Syracuse and may have left that area by 1822 went to Quebec). The answer she received may help others working in that area. From the Courthouse: "I searched the grantee index from 1794-18 70 and found no record of the above named, however, the name Pangborn and Pangburn appeared several times with Ist names of Stephen, Moses, Zerah, William H., Esther, Martin and Charles. "

Lamora adds - Believe this Zerah is brother of Ziba Pangborn. Note Pangburn Letter, Vol. 2, No. 2, p. 9 - Colchester, VT death - Zerah's child and Virgennes, VT marriage Ziba Pangborn and Hannah Johnson. Ziba's mother died 1838 near Syracuse, probably at home of Zerah Pangborn in Salina, a suburb north side Syracuse, or she may have been with her daughter, Mrs. Joel Williams.

Ed Note - If you have ancestors in Onandaga County - check the names - these could be land records you need!

And Lamora also sent along a copy of" The Index To Old Wars Pension Files 1815-1926" transcribed by Virgil D. White - publ 1987 by National Historical Publishing Co. (These records are also available on film at the LDS History Libraries.)

THANKS Doris, for all your help!

AND - after doing research for over 45 years - the winner is DOROTHY MALETTE!! A great find - some new info on her great-great grandparents!! And here is the material to prove it

The following letter was written by Sarah (Pangborn) Coleman Scane whose mother was Elizabeth Marsh. (Sarah is Dorothy's great grandmother.)

"Grandfather Marsh born in England came with parents to States with United Empire Loyalists. They wouldn't take Oath of Allegiance and went to Nova Scotia and from there to Toronto. Mother was born in Toronto on Yonge Street in 1812. Grandfather was in War of 1812. He married Mary Kendrick from Montreal. Their children were Jane Mary, (mother) Eliza, and Hiram Luccard. She then married a man named Laing. They had two sons Joseph and Isaac.

-------

Page 5

--------------

 -Continued from Page 4)

Dorothy adds - At the Burton Historical Collection, I found the grandfather's name and the marriage: Leonard Marsh of Yonge Street and Mary Kendrick - 20 Nov 1804 at York. (Fellow bondsman) -John Kendrick -- (Witness) - Hiram Kendrick.

I believe this Hiram Marsh to be the one who married Amanda Pangborn, daughter of Hiram and Alinza Pangborn.. Dorothy also believes that Hiram and Amelia (McCollum) Pangborn are part of her line.

The letter written by Sarah also included places where children of James and Elizabeth Pangburn's children were born:

 I . James Canada

 2. Mary Jane New York

 3. Priscilla Karapossa, Ontario, Canada

 4. Sarah Ann Guelph, Ontario, Canada

 5. Darius Guelph, Ontario, Canada

 6. Isaac St. Mary's, Ontario, Canada

 7. Calista Blanchard, Ontario, Canada

 8. Matilda Blanchard, Ontario, Canada

 9. Hiram Blanchard, Ontario, Canada

10. Sheba Blanchard, Ontario, Canada

11. Emelia Blanchard, Ontario, Canada

12. Leonard Orford, Ontario, Canada

13. Charlottte Orford, Ontario, Canada

Dorothy also adds - in "Pioneers of Blanshard" by William Johnston (1899 Briggs of Toronto) - Page 35:

List of pathfinders includes James Pangburn in 1847 as well as a warden with two other men. His job was to include being a fence viewer... making certain fences were at least 4 1/2' high, staked, ridered and locked... no animals to run (stags, cattle or hogs under 30 pounds).

His name appears as having certified the clerk's fees 15 September 1847 and he signed a by-law dated 3 February 1847. On 3 January 1848 the people of Blanchard met at Joseph Case's tavern in the village of St. Mary's to appoint officers and pass legislation. James Pangburn was again elected with two others.

Blanchard is in Perth County, Ontario

And some other little bits of info- James Pangburn married Elizabeth Marsh. Her father, Leonard Marsh, definitely went to Nova Scotia from New York with his Loyalist parents. All Loyalists who exiled themselves from the States were furnished lands. The big exodus was from September 1782 to December 1783. As many as 35,000 left New York in 1783.

Dorothy believes that Hiram Marsh is a brother to Elizabeth (Marsh) Pangburn, wife of James Pangburn.

And last, but definitely not least - some more info.on the  Coleman/ Scane/Pangborn families

From " County Of Kent in Ontario "

THOMAS SCANE of Ridgetown has for over thirty-five years been a prominent surveyor of this section. As his services have been greatly in demand, calling him all over this county and into many adjacent ones there is hardly a better known man in this section of the Province than he.

The Scane family was also well known and highly respected, figuring prominently, as it did, in the early settlement of the region. His grandfather, Thomas Scane, came from England, and settled on land near Ridgetown, purchased from Col. Talbot, as early as 1824, when the place was a wilderness. He made a good home for himself, which is now in the possession of descendants. Both he and his wife died in this family homestead.

Thomas Scane (2) son of Thomas and father of him whose name heads this sketch, was born in England, and early in life came with his parents to Ridgetown, where he resided for many years. In his young manhood he married Charlotte Reeder, who was born in England, and in her girlhood came with her parents to this country. Mr. Scane died 1877, and his wife in June 1875.

(Continued next Page)

PAGE 6

---------------

(Continued from Page 5)

By this marriage there were four children. Miss Jane and Miss Betsey now reside on the family homestead. Henry settled on the farm homestead where he engaged in farming for some years and where he died, leaving a widow, formerly Mary Brien, of Howard (who died 1891) and four daughters: Ellen, who married William Macise: Ada. the wife of Alexander Watson, of Canada: Katie who married John Smith and resides in Ridgetown: and May who married Archer Kenedy, and also resides in Ridgetown. Thomas (3) completes the family. Thomas Scane, the third to bear the honored name, was born in Ridgetown, April 20, 1834. In the district schools of his neighborhood, he received his education. Displaying a mathematical bent, he later took a course in surveying under J.C. Livingston of Chatham. Possessed of a bright intellect he mastered the science in a short time. and, at Toronto. in 1865, passed his examination, and received his diploma. Now prepared to take up the business of life, he started out as a regular surveyor, confining his engagements for a time to County Kent.

Mr. Scane has been twice married. His first wife, Katie Brien, of Ridgetown, died, leaving two children:  Ann J. died young and James A., who married Maud Miles, of Chatham, and has one son, James W. settled in Chatham, where he is now keeping a hotel.

In December 1876, Mr. Scane married (second) Mrs. Sarah A, Coleman, who was born in Canada June 9, 1943, daughter of James and Eliza (Marsh) Paugborn. In 1865, Mrs. Sarah married her first husband Walter E. Coleman, a prominent business man and large property owner of Ridgetown, who worked at the undertaking and cabinet making trades there for some years, and also owned and operated a gristmill. He died in April 1874, leaving his widow and three daughters: Isabel, born in Ridgetown, married Sanford Reason of Michigan, and they have three sons; Mary E. married James Philips and lives in Milwaukee; and Grace E. is the wife of Henry Gergens (Juergens?), of Cleveland, Ohio.

Mr. Scane had two children by his second marriage:

Thomas (4) born 1877, procured his education in the Institute at Ridgetown and the Business College of Chatham, and resides at home; Letha L., born in 188 1, attended the Institute at Ridgetown, and is a young woman of scholarly tastes.

Directly after his marriage Mr. Scane settled at the home in Ridgetown, where he now resides. Continuing the active duties of his chosen profession - surveying - he has fulfilled his engagements with a promptness and accuracy of workmanship which have commended him to people far and near. He has surveyed lands not only in his own county, but also in many outlying ones, and he has followed the business steadily, and has often been pressed with engagements, he has made it a paying one. A good financier, has always invested his savings wisely and now owns a fine large farm adjoining Ridgetown. In 1883 he replaced his first residence by a handsome brick one in which he now lives.

Thomas Scane is a man of many attainments and of the highest integrity, has won a name for himself throughout this section of Canada. His business dealings have always been marked with fairness, and even generosity; and his work by conscientiousness, thoroughness and the highest intelligence. His home bears evidence of culture and refinement, where love and good will prevail. Well informed on all questions, his advice is often sought by his fellowmen. He is genial in disposition, kindly by nature, and possesses many shining social attributes, which have won friends for him at every move in life. Both he and his wife are leading members of the Methodist Church. In a politics he has always been an unwavering Conservative. Socially he and his wife are classed among the first in Ridgetown.

JAMES PAUGBORN, father of Mrs. Scane was born in Canada, of English parentage. After his marriage he resided for some time in St Marys but in 1854 he settled upon a farm in Howard Township, where he carried on agriculture with much success for many years. Finally desirous of a change, he moved to Livingston County, Michigan where he died. During his young manhood, he married Eliza Marsh whose people came from England to New York during the American Revolution, and soon afterward moved to Ontario, becoming one of the pioneer families of Ridgetown.

Leonard Marsh, a relative served in the War of 1812. Mrs. Paugborn died in Michigan. To Mr. and Mrs. Paugborn were born twelve children of whom are now living: Priscilla married D.A. White, a well-to-do dentist in New Mexico; Sarah is mentioned above. Darius is engaged in farming in Livingston County, Michigan. Calista married Henry Croft (now deceased of Michigan) and they have had one daughter Permilla. Isaac is married and resides in Michigan. Sheba married Henry Everett of Alpena City. Amelia married Alfred Smith, a merchant in Michigan. Charlotte married Andrew Gill and they reside in British Columbia.

THANKS, Dorothy, for all of your material Keep it coming !!!
