Page 71

In the chapter on the early Baptist Church in Elizabeth Township, it is written;  ISAAC PANGBURN and SUSAN his wife (were members).  MR PANGBURN was one of the original abolitionists, at a time, too, when it was about all a man’s life was worth to avow his sentiments but Mr P was not a man to be switched off the straight track by any amount of persecution or that stronger argument of the slave-holder – rotten eggs.

                                           October 4, 1938

Dear Mr Pangborn,

No doubt you will be wondering who is writing to you from California

So this will identify me the undersigned  My next door neighbor, Mr John McGregor, formerly of the same name and place in Michigan, has been my neighbor for over 20 years and he has spoken to me several times about you and not many months ago I read an article in his Home Michigan Newspaper where you are living in Bad Axe and running for Congressman on the primary election so my curiosity was aroused more than ever  So I made up my mind to write you about the subject of Pangborn History

There are several ways of spelling the name – 1st original way Pangbone, then Pangburn by some and Pangborn our way and many Pangborne . I am a great, great grandson of Beebee Pangborn, who lived in Vermont

He had 2 sons as far as I ever heard of  My great grandfather Ziba Pangborn  born 1763 in Panton, VT and the other son Zabina Pangborn  and two or three sisters or daughters I mean, Lucy and Annie  I believe Ziba my great grandfather moved to Canada in 1822 and was Master Mechanic for the Molson Steamboat Line at Montreal until 1847 when he died at St Johns, Quebec of Thyphoid Fever at his son’s residence, George Washington Pangborn in September 1847

I could write a long history of his and grandfather, my father George Walter and my Uncle Herbert Alonzo Pangborn in their career in connection with the early steamboats on the St Lawrence River – and the first Railroad in Canada, the Old Champlain & St Lawrence Ry & Grand Trunk Ry

I kept up correspondence for years of inquiry but never could get beyond Beebee Pangborn  What his father’s name was  All I know is what my dear Father told me 4 brothers came to America about 1639 and settled in New York and finally I settled in New York and finally I settled in Vergennes, VT and I went to New Jersey and I went to Massachusetts

I wrote to Major John G Pangborn    in Baltimore years ago  He had the whole history  but I could never get it or even hear from him  He was connected with the Baltimore and Ohio RY and at Chicago World’s fair in 1893, had charge of all the exhibits of B & O Ry – all the old engines and cars and I met him there  He looked very much like my Grandfather, G Wash Pangborn  We had quite a long talk but is dead long ago and so I have never heard anymore

Several years ago I heard of Wm J Pangborn (poor writing; Canada or Monon Route)  and lives in Michigan City, Mich  He told me his grandfather’s name was Samuel   his father’s was George Anthony But went by name of Anthony

This man had 3 brothers James, Joseah and Alonzo and Alonzo was killed in Toledo in 1856  My Grandfather had an Uncle named Alonzo I believe, so he named his 2nd son after him  so we our side must be cousin or this Conductor and I would be about 4th Cousin

I heard of another Dan Pangborn who lived about 3 miles from Jackson, Mich and kept a Hotel there and used to give swell dinners to the ones who overlaid  Frogs Legs  Everyone liked to stop there and was known by Uncle Dan him and his wife were so kind and good to every one

And then there were 2 brothers Elizah and Myron Pangborn in Marshall, Michigan  Myron was a Master Mechanic of M C Ry at Marshall, Mich   and Elijah was a Watchmaker and Jeweller at same place I believe My father told me there were related to him

My father was 78 when he died in Downey, Calif April 27, 1919  My Uncle Herbert Alonzo died May 27th, 1932 and was 88 years old in Rockland, Ont, Canada and *I am 71 years old Sep 26, 2938   Commencing with Great Grandfather Ziba, down to myself, all were connected in Mechanical engineering Line for 100 years without a break

I would be much pleased to have you write and give me any information father back in History  I know we are all of original Pangbourne Family but I would be so pleased to find out more and put it all together  I have a book of the New Jersey side of Randolphs and Stephen Pangborns of Barnstable  Would be pleased to hear from you if you have time and care if to write me  I am a retired Loco Engr of Southern Pacific Ry after 39 years service  Live next door to my good friend John McGregor, also a retired Ry Section Foreman, and wish to thank you in advance for your kindness and wish you all the greatest success and prosperity and good health in your election and life

I remain  -  Yours very truly,

      E J W PANGBORN

I am enclosing you a list of all the Pangborns I know of in Canada besides my Father’s Brother Uncle Herbert Alonzo who died in Rockland, Ont in May 1932, 89 years old  His son Ernest lives in Niagara Falls, Ont  and also 2 Grandsons Herbert & Dan and they have 2 sons all in Niagara Falls, Ont   I was very much interested in your history and I feel I can help you out  Oh there is Pangborns in every state of the Union

The Pangborn’s in Prov of Ontario:

Ziba Pangburn he spells his name Burn, came over from New York near Syracuse I believe and went to Quebec City but just a short while in 1812, then moved to Barrie, Simcoe Co, Ontario, near Toronto   I don’ t know who his wife was or what he followed but he had 2 sons or and a daughter George & Henry & Elizabeth  George married Mary Osburn and

Henry don’t know anything about him  George was a cooper and carpenter and lived in Toronto when he died May 1903 aged 69 years  He had 3 sons Fred, Percy & Norman and 3 daughters Mrs Stratton, Toronto; Annie died June 13, 1930  Louise still living at 179 Fulton St, Toronto  Single Fred in Detroit, Michigan  Percy and Norman no records of them  I believe their Grandfather went to Canada in 1812  My father thought there were distantly related to him

I heard the original way our name was spelled was Pangbourne  Some dropped the ‘E’ and ‘U’ and some the ‘O’ and ‘E’  It was 2 clans of Scotch Lowlanders and Highlanders of Scotland and Pang intermarried with the Bournes so hence the name PANGBOURNES so they all wanted to save ink So Ziba Pangborn said and dropped ‘U’ and ‘E’ and made it ‘BORN’

Pangborns of Ontario, Louise Pangburn, George’s daughter: Henry

Pangburn DIED IN Iowa, Sept 1930  George’s daughter told me in 1938  He was 81 years old

Elizabeth Pangburn she married Mr Trowbridge  She died Also Sep 1919 in Toronto, Ontario

George Pangburn died May 1930 – 69 years old   These were the children of ZIBA who came to Canada from near Syracuse, New York  Louise says about 1812  Louis is the daughter of the above George and now lives at 179 Fulton St, Toronto, Ont

Then there were another Pangborn that kept a stopping place or Hotel rather in St Mary’s Ont not far west of Hamilton  His name was Isaac Pangborne lived there in 1858; his wife name was Mary about 10 years ago I met a Mr John Turnbull who lived at St Mary’s and knew Mrs Isaac Pangborne; he put an ‘E’ at the end of ‘BORN’  I have an old Canadian Directory of 1858 of Upper & Lower Canada and Isaac Pangborn is there and keeps a stopping place a very fine place to stop  St Mary’s is about 12 miles from Stratford, Ont

There’s a Pangman Family  that were early settlers in Lower Canada in Montreal about 1786 according to what my Grandfather said  Came over from the States they were called Skidadlers and my Uncle Herbert in Fall of 1879 when he was a Loco Engr on the Old North Shore Ry now Can Pac Ry he run over a man and killed him at St Lin Station, a man by that name Pangman – run over horse & buggy at Ry Crossing  Uncle was running to Montreal, Canada

Then there are a Pangborn I think is name is Fred a butcher in Montreal near Point St Charles he spells it BORNE   He and his brother George came from England and George lives in Sherbrooke Prov of Quebec they formerly live at Pangborne on the Thames in England so I understand no connection with Pangborns, Vermonters.

There is a Pangborn town in New Brunswick on Can National Ry  I guess that’s about all of the Pangborns I know of

Now on page 6, I might also mention I have a book it’s about an inch thick called the RANDOLPH PANGBURN HISTORY – note it’s spelled “BURN” Handed down from Stephen Pangburn  The Pangburns came from New Town Long Island where the name appears from 1675 to 1683 and came to Perth Amboy, New Jersey in 1774 (?) and died in Spring of 1778 and their descendants are all over the U S  My grandfather said there were 4 brothers came to America  This book was got up by  C P McClure  of the McClure Magazine folks  This C P his name was Cicero Pangburn and lived in Allegheny Co, about 60 miles from Pittsburgh  I got the book from him for $2.00 in 1916  He is dead some years now

This is a copy I got from Mrs John G Pangborn address No 3757 Westminster Place, St Louis, Missouri, USA on Feb 20, 1930: John G  was Major in the Civil War and was dead when his wife wrote me and gave me this James or Cobas Pangborn came from Holland originally from England and settled on a farm in Albany Co, at a place called Stoney Hill, now known as Bethelham 8 miles north of Albany   His Brother named John lived in Schenectady Co at Rotterdam Dam Jct & was named Squire Pangborn  Wilhemus Pangborn, Cobas  son lived in Albany and John G  now

Major Pangborn his son and lives at above address   Major’s Mother’s name was Gladding of Albany, NY  They had a daughter named Mary went to London England in 1903 and was presented to King and Queen of England and visited the Town of  Pangborne on the River Thames  A great piece came out in the San Francisco Examiner paper  Her picture was in it  My father saw Major John G at the Chicago World’s Fair about the last of October in 1893  He had charge of the Baltimore & Ohio RY Exhibit of old and new Locomotives from 1832 to 1893  Father said he resembled his father George Washington and said as soon as he got home he would send father the whole PANGBORN HISTORY he had it but never did and his wife wrote this much and promised she would send me a copy of the history he had but I never got it so they may be all dead by now -  Nov 17th, 1938 E J W PANGBORN, Colton, CA

              THE PANGBORN FAMILY

The earliest member of this family known to me is  l – AMOS PANGBORN and his wife Polly  He was born about 1770-80, probably in Massachusetts

The U S Census of 1840 indicates they were living in Barnard, Vermont

She died in 1854, aged 77 years  II –James L Pangborn, of this record is their son and the only child known to me: quite possibly there were others

II – James L Pangborn was b 1912, Barnard, Windsor Co, Vermont, d

James is known to have been employed in manufacturing, 1840 US Census, at Barnard, Vt and to have been a farmer and a blacksmith after the move to Michigan in 1868  He settled in Michigan on 40 acres, SW ¼ of the NE ¼, section 2, Richland Twp, Saginaw Co, Michigan, located about a half mile south of the Winslows in Midland Co  A road that meanders roughly diagonally through the section is today named Pangborn Road   Following Hannah’s death, 1880 U S Census, he is known to have lived in the Winslow household with widow Mary and sons William and Frank and Louisa who were just married  James probably moved to Wisconsin with sons James or Henry shortly after 1882

Alison Childs writes:

While going through some of my material on my Rynex ancestors I came across the following material that may be of some use to your researchers with Pangburns in the Gilderland, Albany Co, NY area   This material was printed on heavy paper and did not appear to have been part of a book   The paper was acquired by another relative when he was visiting Rynex descendants in the Flint, Michigan area   I suspect that it was prepared for an anniversary or perhaps a family reunion  Text follows:

             THE +  RYNEX  +  FAMILY

                            BORN

Isaac Rynex              May 31, 1822,  Schnectady, NY

Mary Pangborn            March 12, 1828,   Gilderland, Albany Co, NY

Frances H Rynex          Feb 17, 1845,  Schenectady, NY

Abram II Rynex           March 31, 1847, Schenectady, NY

Samuel Rynex             Nov 13, 1848,  Amsterdam, Montgomery Co, NY

Jemima E Rynex           June 3, 1850, Penfield, Monroe Co, NY

Maryette Rynex           Mar 13, 1852,  Penfield, Monroe Co, NY

Althea Rynex             Jan 2, 1854, Royalton, Fulton Co, Ohio

William M Rynex          May 24, 1856, Easton Rapids, Michigan

Emma J Rynex             May 29, 1858, Eaton Rapids, Michigan

Susan Rynex              Mar 24, 1860, Delhi, Ingham Co, Mich

Isaac Rynex              June 12, 1864, Tompkins, Jackson Co, Michigan

Tuney Rynex              Nov 23, 1866, Tompkins, Jackson Co, Mich

I have considerable information on the Rynex Family going back to the immigrant Valentijn Reijnneck (Rynex_ who came from Maastrich, Holland in the mid- 1700’s  I do not have any additional information on Mary Pangburn

Thanks, Allison for sharing your material

We have a new researcher, Kathy (Hall) Knall, and she is looking for information on her maternal great grandmother, Emelia Pangborn   Come on, researchers, help her out  Send us some info to help her fill in the blanks

        * * * * * * * * * * * *

And another new researcher, Brian Tabor, says:

I am searching for Julianna Evarts, born 2-20-1784 Guilford, Conn  dau of Ezra & Lorrain (Norton) Evarts  She married ??????? Pangborn and was alive in the 1830’s when her father applied for his war pension  He was living in Addison, VT  I do not know what happened to Julianna  I am a descended from her brother, George Evarts  Any information appreciated

Brian needs your help  Look through your records and see if you can find anything!

The following letter from Mary Jamison may give you some food for thought!

First, I want to thank you for all those Pangborn which my husband and I keep filed among our genealogical material  He is a descendant of Stephen Pangborn’s daughter Rebecca, who married Jacob Jenson, the barrel maker, who had his work shop and farm on Milestone Brook just east of Highstown in New Jersey  Consequently, we are interested in the early Pangborns  We have found that in some material Stephen Pangborn’s three children, William, Lines and Rebecca are thought to be the children of his second wife Anna Montgomery  The children are the offspring of his first wife Rebecca Imlay  Rebecca was the widow of William Imlay when she married Stephen  We do not know what her maiden name was

In looking at the material in the first copy of the Pangborn Letter in which you give your line starting with Peter, I have noted the name of his wife which is given as Grace Ffidoe  I have , over the past few years been doing research which required me to learn handwritting two and three hundred years old  I found a manual of old hand writing which has been a great help  On the basis of my experience I would suggest that Grace’s name is Feder probably an old spelling of the modern name Fedder or Fedders  In much old writing two small written letter “f” is a way to write a capital “F”  The letter small “e” is very confusing  It is written like a small “o” but has a little loop on the top  A small “r” is just a little squiggle which on the end of a word could look like a small “e”  I would like very much to see the manuscript or a film of the manuscript from which it cam  Is it from the records of Oyster Bay, L I?

My other observation is that I found in a book on the genealogy of the Tuttle family that among the children of Joseph Tuttle and his wife Hannah Munson of New Haven, Conn, who were married in 1887 that daughter, Joanna, married a Stephen Pangborn and that son, Stephen, married Ruth Fitz-Randolph  Are these people the new Jersey family?  It would be interesting to know how they ended up in NJ

Any comment or enlightenment in these matters would be gratefully received

Good question, Mary    Personally, I have never seen Grace Ffidoe’s name written on any document  Does someone out there have a copy of a document with the name on it???

              * * * * * * * * * * * *

Martha Chism submitted some material she located in “Branches & Twigs” (Vol 7, No 2) on the estate of Hezekiah Barber  He operated the Barber’s Ferry across Lake Champlain from Barbers Point to Arnold Bay, Vermont  Hezekiah came to Westport, Essex Co, NY from Litchefield, Conn and settled in Barbers Point in 1787  Among the list of persons that owed Hezekiah money at the time of his death in 1818 were:

PANGBURN, DAVID

3.67

          David

                 5.25

          James

                 5.68

          John

                   6.93

         Joseph

                 6.28

          Labine

                   2.13

          Liberes

50.94

          Nathaniel

                  1.62

         Samuel

                  1.40

        Timothy

                 3.45

For anyone working in this area this article would be very helpful  The list contains a total  of 261 names – many of which are allied names in Pangburn genealogy  The original list was copied from the estate of Hezekiah Barber which is on record in the County Clerk’s Office in Elizabeth, NY

Nancy Pangburn Bauder writes:

“In researching my father’s line, that of Orin Darius Pangburn  I’ve encountered a peculiarity I’d like to submit to you for you consideration and whatever advice you may have

As I wrote you when I submitted the Owen – Pangburn material in the spring,  I’ve been at this only three years;  therefore I lack expertise in this intricacies   I did however as Doane suggests question my living relative first  From family reports oral, no written documentation – I am told that the grand parents of my grandparents(the parents of Orin Darius Pangburn) were Dyer Pangburn and Catherine Hand  My mother insists that my grandfather spelled these names very carefully for her

In the Spring edition of  The Pangburn Letters, the parents of Orin Darius are listed as Jedediah Pangburn (Pangman) and Philinda Rounds

The source of this information is Viola Robert’s work  I am confused, but I have an inclination which is pure conjecture I am wondering id Dyer could be a diminutive form of Jedediah (Diah-Dyer?)  I wonder if Jedediah could have been married more than once I spent two days at Newberry in July and I found a notation in Viola’s work which I copy here as I found it

           “From Records in Utica, NY

             Herkimer, NY 1865 Census

                 Dyer Pangburn, 52

                 Mar 3 times

Wife III, Almira, 42 b NJ  Mar 2:

11 children by first marriage and one by

second  That one two months old”

I have no desire to be guilty of a novice’s hasty conclusions, but I wonder if this person could be the same person as Jedediah Incidentally, I recently made a trip to Roosevelt Cemetery in search of Philinda’s grave (per Viola’s information) and found no stone

I think this is very strange because the marked graves of Richard and Nancy Gay Pangburn, Orin and Lovina Owen Pangborn and Frank and Anna Bowering Pangburn are all there   Only the one generation is missing

I’ve talked with Bill Wilsey about this and we’ve reached no conclusions   If you have any ideas or observations, I’d be delighted to hear from you” Nancy, wish we could offer you more help – but since we can’t, let’s turn to our researchers and ask them to offer some suggestions or answers
