While browsing through the material collected by Viola Pangburn Roberts, we came across an article about Arden X . Pangborn. We had no idea where he was living at this time, but our good friend, Cyrus R. Pangborn came through for us again. He sent a copy of a recent letter he had received from Arden and we contacted him and lie was kind enough to update the material in Violas records.

Arden X. Pangborn

Manager of Station K.G.W., Portland, Oregon

When Arden Pangborn resigned his newspaper post in March,1941, he stepped into a new field as head of the paper I s companion enterprise, radio station KGW. His immediate acceptance by the industry was evidenced by his election within a year to the, post of Pacific Coast Representative on first NBC stations Planning arid Advisory Committee. In this position he represented NBC affiliated stations in Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada and Hawaii. Re-elected at the end of 1942, he is a member of this important group.

Arden X. - the "X"' an assumed initial- was born on Groundhog Day 1907 in the State of Kansas but has spent most of his life it,, Oregon. At eighteen he joined the staff of  THE 0REGONIAN " The Great Newspaper of the West" as sports writer but left shortly to continue his education.

Working his way through the. University of Oregon as sports editor for three daily newspapers. Pangborn also wrote articles for a fashion magazine, edited a weekly automobile page and wrote and syndicated a column of book reviews. These activities left him somewhat short of study hours, but he admits having had enough spare time to write pulp detective stories, play around with student politics and act as assistant publicity director of the University.

"Pang" as he is known  by his coworkers and friends, came into contact with radio only once during his college years. When he was editor of The Emerald, the college Daily he conceived the idea of an exchange arrangement between the paper and the local radio station - an idea that resulted in a series of programs which lasted several years. In his capacity as editor, Pangborn announced the first program - and immediately following the broadcast, it was decided that his radio talents were not in the field of announcing

Convinced that his future lay in a newspaper career, he returned to The Oregonian in 1929.  He rose rapidly, and in 1932 was appointed city editor. By 1936 he had become executive news editor and the year1938 found him taking over  the managing editorship. From a rapidly declining circulation of 90,000 the paper grew. under Pangborn's  guidance to a steadily increasing circulation of 150,000 copies daily. And his influence still remains.

For several years Pangborn has continued turning out pulp detective stories. He often wrote under his own name but occasionally adopted the pen names of Adam King and Philip Sidney. During his rise in the newspaper world, Pangborn's contacts with radio were few. But his interest never lagged and when the opportunity came in 1941 to join KCW as managing director, he promptly resigned as managing editor of the Pacific Northwest's largest daily newspaper to accept the new responsibility.

Page 2

Since the arrival, the station’s personnel has been reorganized, program structure overhauled salaries generally increased and several technical advances made.

Last fall, Pangborn was elected president of the Oregon Advertising Club, formerly known as the Advertising Federation of Portland. Here ,too, the “Pangborn influence” has been immediate and beneficial. In six months the membership of the Club has doubled and its activities expanded to include community committees from other Oregon cities in a joint campaign for post-war development of Oregon tourist trade. Pang’s latest assignment is appointment by Gov. Earl Snell to represent the advertising Club on the Oregon Committee of the American Commission for living War Memorials.

In 1932, Pangborn married Marie Mathison of Portland. They have two children, Kim and Mary Alice. Aside from their offspring, the Pangborn’s two greatest enthusiasms are phonograph records - of which there are several thousand scattered around the house - and New York City.

He is a descendant of Timothy Pangborn and - Partridge of Essex Co. N. Y. timothy Pangborn was a descendant of Pieter Pangbourne of Newtown, L.I. and N. Y. C. earlier.

As far as one can ascertain is as follows: 1. Pieter, 2. Stephen, 3. Joseph, 4. Timothy, 5. John, 6. Cyrus, 7. Quincy June, 8. Arden X.

And now - an update by Adren X. Pangborn

I was both surprised and flattered by your wife’s telephone call, and by your follow-up letter, with its amazing wealth of information on various branches of the Pangburn/Pangborn, etc. family. As I wrote Cyrus, it represents a prodigious amount of work and a superbly dedicated interest. I learned more about our own line in tow hours than I had in the pervious 82 years, As for information on the Quincy Jan Pangborn extension of the Pangborn line. I can ass little.

As your records already show. Quincy was married to Bess Lee Blake on Feb. 3 1904. Bess was born in El Paso, Texas and where and how she met Quincy, and how she got to Burr Oak, Kansas. I do not know. In any event, they had three children: Aline Hortense, born 1905; Arden X. (originally named Lissen Arden) born 1907; and Marjorie Lucille born 1909, died 1974.

Aline married Robert Charlton and they had one daughter, Carol Ann. Robert died some years ago. Aline Charlton now live in Portland.

Marjorie married Evan Blake and they had a son Graeme, and a daughter, Shelley. Both Marjorie and Evan are deceased.

As for my family: I married Marie Mathison on June 25. 1932. We have had two children, Kim Arden, born Oct 31, 1939, and Mary Alice, born March 24 1941.

Kim married Sidney Munhollen Oct 21, 1966 and they have two sons to carry on the Pangborn line - Bradley Jay, born March 4, 1969 and Jeffrey Lee, born January 5, 1971.

Mary Alice married Rodney Pfeifer on November 29, 1967 and they had one daughter, Lisa Marie, born Oct. 10, 1969. Rodney died in 1974. Mary Alice married John Bewman April 28, 1983.

Your information on my personal background is accurate, if unduly generous, up to my term as general manager of radio station KGW. In February 1946, I returned to The Oregonian as business manger and remained there until January 1951, at which time I joined Southland Insurance Inc, a small San Antonio, Texas conglomerate as vice president, with responsibility for managing Southland’s two broadcast properties, WOAI radio and WOAI-TV. In 1952 and again in 1953 I was elected secretary-treasurer of the then newly formed N.B.C. Television Affiliates Association. In 1953 I was also elected president of the San Antonio Better Business Bureau. (Later, in 1959, I served as president of Portland’s Better Business Bureau.)

In October 1955, I returned to Portland as vice-president and editor of the Oregon Journal, Portland’s afternoon daily newspaper-a competitor of The Oregonian - where I remained until my retirement in 1972, a little over 18 years. Since retirement, I have been inactive, although I am still an honorary member of the Oregon Advertising Club( now named Portland Advertising Federation) and of the board of trustees of Pacific University, an independent liberal arts institution located in Forest Grove, OR where I was active as trustee for a number of years before retirement.

Thank you very much for your telephone call and for your fascinating copies of The Pangborn Letter.

Thanks Arden, for updating your line - and we wish you many years of happy retirement.

For years we have been saying , - NO MATTER HOW YOU SPELL IT - PANGBURN/PANGBORN/ PANGMAN - we are all related.

Viola Pangburn Roberts material (published courtesy of Newberry Library in Chicago) includes the following:

Peter Pangburn was known in Canadian life as Bastannais

Pangman. He was born in New England, just where has not been determined. The name, Pangborn, was too often spelled Pangman both in Vermont and New York in the pioneer days; even some of the writer’s relatives went by that name. Peter Pangborn died 1819 in Canada. The accounts say he was of German descent. That may have been on his maternal side, but on the Pangborn side he was English, having his ancestry in New York City. One Peter Pangborne lived there 1673 and about 1686 bought the Pine Street property.

When a young man, presumably, during the troublesome time of the Revolutionary War, he , being a Loyalist went to Canada and interested himself in the wilds of Canada west of Lake Superior, exploring the county west including the Red River Valley and the Rockies. It is said he was the first white man to view the Rockies from the east. That was about 1780.

Now, Viola had more to say about peter Pangman, but Peter Charles Brunsdale, a new researcher from Canada, say it much better.

Please find enclosed a record of the Canadian family of Peter PANGMAN - fur trader. This record is as complete as I and my relatives are able to make it. I am sure many more Pangmans could probably be found in Canada and elsewhere.

If you are able to help me to trace the parents and origin of Peter PANGMAN- fur trader. I have many relatives who would like to know their origin (German, Dutch, English? etc.) I am also compiling a record of my mother’s many famous ancestors for the Canadian Archives and would like to include the origin of Peter Pangman as no Canadian historian has ever recorded this information (needle in haystack)

Peter Brunsdale included a lot of background material on the PANGMAN family - too lengthy to be included here. We will forward copies to anyone who is interested.

One item in particular, however, really tells you about the life of Peter PANGMAN, and it reads:

PANGMAN, PETER (1744?-1819) - fur trader, was born in New England of German descent, about 1744. He engaged in the fur trade, and in 1767 his name appears in the Michilmackinac licenses as trading to the Mississippi. In 1774 he transferred his energies to the Saskatchewan; and he was engaged in the fur trade on the Saskatchewan almost continuously until 1790. In 1783 he joined Gregory, McLeod and Co.; and in 1787, when his firm was absorbed by the North West Company, he became a partner in the North West Company. He retired from the fur trade about 1794; and in that year he purchased the seigniory of Lachenaic, in Lower Canada; and here he died on August 28, 1819.

He has a half-breed son, commonly known after him as “Bastonnais Pangman”, who was prominent in the Seven Oaks affair on the Red River in 1816; and in 1796 he married Grace MacTier by whom he had one son (q.v.) and one daughter.

Thanks Peter Brunsdale for all of your material. Nice to have our Canadian relatives aboard!!

Phillip Bedient states that according to census records the father of John Pangborn was born in New York and his mother was born in Connecticut.

He further states, for many years we have been searching for the parents of John Pangborn who first appears in Brock Twp., Ontario Co., Ontario in the mid 1830s. There are a number of other Pangborn-Pangman families in that area at that time, but we have not yet made the connection.

And in addition to all of the above information, Phillip also included some additional material that should be very helpful to a lot of researchers.

John C.  Pangborn , farmer, section20, Verona Township, was born Nov. 18, 185 1, at a place in Canada situated northeast of Toronto. His parents, John and Barbara (Shier) Pangborn, came to Verona Township in 1862 and bought 160 acres of land on Section 35. On this they resided until they had cleared and otherwise improved 80 acres, when they sold the place. They are both living at the home of their son.

Mr. Pangborn bought a farm in 1879, which included 40 acres of land. The home farm now contains 120 acres, with 70 acres under cultivation. Mr. Pangborn cleared 68 acres himself. He also built his barn and a part of his residence. In 1881 he lost his barn, all the year's crop of grain and hay, together with his fences and much miscellaneous property, such as the progress of years accumulates in the possession of every farmer. He rebuilt his barn, and in the fall of 1883 repeated privately the experience of two years before, losing his barn, grain, hay, implements and all his farm fixtures, except the wagon and a set of harness. The loss in both fires was about $3,000, with no insurance.

Mr. Pangborn was married Jan. 12, 1880, at Sand Beach, to Ellen, daughter of William and Susannah (Conboy) Taylor, a native of Canada. Two children have been born of this union - Alton C., Jan. 8, 1883, and Morton C., Dec. 29, 1883. Mr. Pangborn was Treasurer of his township in 1881-2.

Ibid, Page 155..

George Pangman, farmer, resident of Section 24, Verona Township, is the son of Sterling and Jane (Mills) Pangman, and was born Nov. 2, 1844, in Ontario, Canada. He began to apply himself to the carpenter's trade when he was 16 years old, and followed it for several years. In 1866 he came to the Township of Verona and bought 80 acres of land. He increased his estate by the purchase of 20 acres additional in 187 1, and has cleared and improved about 60 acres.

Mr. Pangman was married March 27, 1870, at Verona Mills, to Ellen Pangburn. She was born in York Co., Canada, May 10, 1846, and is the daughter of John and Barbara (Shier) Pangburn. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Pangman on the homestead farm. Lena May was born July 14, 1872, and died Sept. 5, 1874 ; Carrie L. was born Aug. 15, 1874; and Silas E. was born Jan. 22, 1877.

Since coming to Huron County, Mr. Pangman has worked at his trade to the extent of erecting his farm buildings, and in the summer of 1883 he assisted in constructing the Verona grist-mills. He passed through and suffered loss in both fires that have swept over Huron County. The family resided at Verona Mills in 1871, in a rented house, which was burned and their furniture with it, at a loss of about $500. The loss in 1881 was about $2,000, the fire destroying a fine house, barn, farming implements, fences, and the accumulations of years, besides the crop of that year, including 220 bushels of wheat, oats, peas, etc., much of which had been placed in the barn the week previous. He had an insurance of $1,300, but has never recovered it.

Ibid, Page 219.

Henry F. Pangborn, fanner, resident on Section 23. Verona Township, was born Dec. 2, 1842, in Canada, and is the son of Thomas and Eliza Pangborn. He was reared to manhood in the manner common to the training of farmers' sons in the Dominion, and came to the township where he has since resided, in 1867. He had become comfortably and fairly started in business life when the first season of loss and disaster overtook Sanilac County. In the Fire of 187 1, Mr. Pangborn lost his house and other property, reaching an aggregate of several hundred dollars. In the fall of the same year, he bought the farm on which he has since resided. It contains 80 acres, with 60 acres under cultivation. In the f ire of 1881 he experienced a loss of $2,000, his house, barn, grain, hay, fences, orchards and stock being destroyed. There was no insurance on the property. Mr. Pangborn has made the improvements on his place himself, and is fast replacing substitutes for all the farm fixtures which previously perished in flames.

He was married Oct. 19, 1868, in Verona Township, to Mrs. Martha (Noonan) Currie, widow of Alexander Currie. She was born June 17, 1842, in Canada, 21 miles from the City of Ottawa, whither her parents removed from Ireland in 1840. They removed to Verona Township, and bought 160 acres in Section 15. Her father, John Noonan, died there in 1875. Her mother, Mary (McLaughlin) Noonan, is living with Henry Pangborn, her son-inlaw, in Verona Township. Mrs. Parigborn has three sisters and one brother - James Noonan, a farmer, located near Bad Axe; Ellen, wife of John Scott, of Verona Township; Mary A. (Mrs. Henry Pangborn; Kate, wife of Byron Davis, a painter of Bad Axe. Mrs. Pangborn became the wife of Alexander Currie in Paris Township, Huron Co., July 10, 1860. He was a native of Canada, and was drowned in 1866, in the Mississippi River, where he was plying his vocation as a sailor. Mary E. and Electa A. Currie are the names of the children born of the first marriage of Mrs. Pangborn.

Ibid, Page 233.

Henry Pangborn, farmer and breeder of stock, Section 22, Verona Township, was born Sept. 13, 1837, in Brock Township, Ontario Co., Canada. He is the son of John and Barbara (Shier) Pangborn, and his father was a lumberman and farmer in the Dominion, in the first of which occupations he assisted until he was 18 years old, when he began to work chiefly on the farm. The family came to Verona Township in 1862, when the father bought 160 acres of land on Section 25, in the southeastern part of the township.

In 1863, Mr. Pangborn bought his farm of 200 acres, where he has since pursued agriculture of a high character, and has 115 acres of land under cultivation. He also deals in cattle. He was a heavy loser by both fires which have devastated Huron County. In the first he was compelled to witness the destruction of his barn, which was filled with farm products, his granery, farm implements, fences, etc., entailing a loss of $2,000. In 188 1, he lost fences and five head of cattle. His house became the refuge for several families who lost everything, and he gave them shelter from one to three months. as the emergency demanded.

Mr. Pangborn has been an active member of society, and of the community to which he belongs. He has been Supervisor five years, and has discharged the duties of the school offices a number of years. He has been deeply interested in the official duties of the several positions he has held. The parents of Mr. Pangborn are residing with his brother John in this township.

His marriage occurred Jan. 22. 1866, in Verona Township, to Mary A. Noonan, daughter of John and Mary (McLaughlin) Noonan. She was born Sept. 4, 1848, in Canada, 21 miles south of the city of Ottawa. The father of Mrs. Pangborn died Oct. 11, 1877. in Verona Township , aged 59 years. Her Mother was born in Augest , 1817 and is still living with her daughter. The latter is the mother of seven -

- children: John A. V., Mary A., Albina G., Nellie M., Samuel H., Matilda B., and Bertha M.

It is with a considerable degree of satisfaction that the publishers of this work are permitted to place the portrait of Mr. Pangborn among its pages. Truly, the citizens of the county will recognize in the likeness one whose interest is in common with their own, and a representative citizen of the county.

Dear Mrs. Roberts,

June 1, 1945

As my paternal grandfather died while my father was very young I was unable to secure many details of' my paternal antecedents from my father before his death in nineteen thirty seven. The few details however that I have secured I am sending at your request.

My paternal grandfather was William Wallace Pangburn born at Rahway, N.J. , my mother Marion McLeish of the same city. My father also William Wallace Pangborn was born at Rahway, in 1870. He died in Linden, N.J. in 1937. Dad had but one sister Laura, now Laura Sauling of Rahway, N.J.

My brother Kyron Patrick Pangborn born also in Rahway. N.J. now resides in Elizabeth, N.J. One sister died May 3, 1904 at the age of six. She was born March 21, 1898.

These are the only facts that I have regarding the family history and antecedents which you were requesting.

Sincerely, Wallace John Pangborn, S.J.

Blanche Childs has joined us as a researcher. She found our newsletter at the Library in Winnetka, Illinois. She says, -

My great- grandmother Maria Burhart's parents were ---Burhart and --- Pangburn (or Pangborn). Her mother was supposedly born in Alsace-Lorraine and her father born in Pennsylvania. The first five children of Michael McCanna and Maria Burhart were born in Canada 1845-1853 (location unknown) and the rest were born in Rochester, Minnesota.

Okay researchers - not too much to go on here - but, look at Pangburn Letter, Vol. 3, No. 1, Pg. 5 - material of Camara Magdaleno:

Sorel, Christ Church Records - No 1991

Pangborn, Susan m. Burhark, David - 2 7 Jan 1839

Also Pangburn Letter, Vol. 5, No. 2, Pg. 3 - material of Lamora Magdaleno - . record of baptism of a son of David Burhart and Susanna Pangborn who are living in St. Armand at the time.

Lamora adds a note that states Susanna is the daughter of Zeba Pangborn and St. Armand is in Missisquoi County, Que.

Bapt. 3-2-1840 Zeba Pangborn Burhart (s/o David and Susanna of St. Armand) born 22-12-1839.

Does anyone have more information for Blanche Childs?????

Again, a big thank you to Lamora for sending the above information. She is a good researchers !! B y  doing all the brothers and sisters in her line - she is helping others !!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

And to all researchers - keep the material coming. Each little piece and part you find helps someone else with their Pangburn line !!
