FINALLY – A RESEARCHER IN ENGLAND!!

Welcome to Carol Faux, our PANGBORN researcher in England.  And she found us thanks to publicity in ”Family Tree Magazine’ (129 Great Whyte, Ramsey, Huntingdon Cambridgeshire, PE17 1 hp, England).

Carol writes: -- the Pangborns came from a small village in Buckinghamshire called Steeple Claydon, which is still there and not changed much.  It was an agricultural community and the women did lace-making.  Its main claim to fame was the Manor House called Claydon House, it still exists and is open to the public. Claydon House was owned by the Verney family, (in the 1800’s). Sir Harry Verney was a popular man, very kind, -- he was Florence Nightengale’s brother-in-law.

Carol’s ties to the Pangborn line is her gr-gr-grandmother, Judith PANGBORN.  She lived in West End, Steeple Claydon, with her parents, Thomas and Mary PANGBORN, and her brothers and sisters. Mary, Amelia, John Maocord, Ann, James and William (twins).

In 1842 Judith PANGBORN married Joseph MILL in Buckingham Registry Office.  They moved to London where Joseph joined the Police Force and had a distinguished career.  Judith bore many children, one of whom was Selina – gr-grandmother to Carol Faux.

Carol has extracted some material from records in England to help others searching that area.

Judy Kelble has submitted some information to help other researchers and hopes someone will come forth with answers to her research problems: --

Lorain County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions:

          PANGBORN, Anson, -- father – died 26 November 1879 63 years, 7 months, 15 days

          PANGBORN, Ada, -- mother – died 27 May 1888   69 years, 1 month, 24 days

Judy states that the above listed Anson PANGBORN is listed as a witness to the will of Truman SQUIRES, son of Betsy PANGBORN.  She is looking for Betsy’s ancestors.  It is possible that Betsy and Anson are related???

Marriages – Lorain County  --  1824 to 1865

PANGBORN, Anson – m. Ida SQUIRES – 5 October 1837

                         Elisha --  m. Polly Ann CHAPPELL  -- Sept 1851

                         George – m. Ellen THORNTON – 4 July 1845

                          Henry – m. Isobel CARVER  -- 3 Oct 1863

                          Luther – m. Mrs. Hannah FREEMAN – 28 Mar 1838

                          Noah – m. Mary M. JOHNSON – 28 Mar 1838

                          Soloman P. – m. Betsey SEWARD – 30 Oct 1841

                          Timothy – m. Harriet BEALS – 6 Jan 1842

                           William – m. Mary L. Goff – 1 Jan 1851

Judy Keble needs your help.  Is Ida SQUIRES (who married Anson PANGBORN) THE NIECE OF Truman SQUIRES (son of Betsy Pangborn and Ezra Squires)??? If so, Ida would be Betsy’s granddaughter.

Judy cites her source on the above material – Lorain County Library in Elyria, Ohio

Lamora Magdalen sent copies of correspondence she received from Albert G. E. Smith of Canada.  His letter reads:

“&ldots; I recently bought a book written by one of our local historians on the history of the first Railroad in Canada.  This railroad was founded by a group of businessmen in the Montreal area.  It ran from Laprairie, which is on the south shore from Montreal, to the town of St. Jean.

This was in the time period just before the Patriot rebellion of 1837-38.

In reading briefly this book.  I was surprised to come across the PANGBORN family name.  Naturally, I read this page with great interest.

It turn out that Ziba Pangborn, who I had found out was an engineer, worked on this railroad.  Even his son George Was. PANGBORN was involved with this project.

I took the liberty of translating the page concerning the PANGBORNS, as the book was written in French, and am sending you a copy of this translation.  I have also provided the references that he gives in his book.  Unfortunately, the book has no index, so I was unable to see if there was any further mention of the PANGBORNS.

You will probably find this interesting, and informative to add to an eventual biography of Ziba PANGBORN.

Also at the same time, doing research for another client in some Church Registers, I came across the same first name, Ziba. It turned out to be a record of baptism of a son of David BURHART and SUSANNA PANGBORN, who were living in St. Armand at the time. (Lamora adds a note that states Susanna is the dau. of Ziba and St. Armand is in Missisquoi County, Que).

Bapt. 3-2-1840 Ziba PANGBORN BURHART (s/o David and Susanna of St. Armand) born 22-12-1839

From microfilm of Phillipsburg Methodist Church Records at Sherbrooke.

Again, at the end of May, I was visiting some old cemeteries in the Burlington, VT area and saw the PANGBORN name.  The old Colchester Vermont Cemetery near the corner of Routes # 7 and 2A.

          Aretmus, s/o Zerah and Esther PANGBORN, d. Mar 20 1820, ae 1 year 9 mos 20 days ...”

(Lamora adds comment, Zerah was bro/o Ziba.   He married Esther BRONSON.)

Translation from French

“L’avenement du premier chemin de fer au Canada”St. Jean – Laprairie 1836 – by Francois Cinq-Mars Editions Mille Roches, St Jean sur Michelieu, 1986

Page 148

“In between time, the directors were charged to find a new engineer for their locamotive.  John Molson, Jr., one of the shareholders of the wooden track road, decided then to call the foreman of the “Machine Shop”of his steamboat company, Ziba Pangborn.  This man carried out the repairs with his son, George Washington Pangborn who was assistant engineer on the Princess Victoria and Moise Latulippe, a fireman working on the same boat. (35) Ziba Pangborn was also head engineer of the Molson steamboats.  Accustomed to the low pressure of the marine engines he was surprised to notice the high pressure of the locamotive.  In comparison, this last engine revealed a dangerous monster that must be handled with precaution. (36)

The 8th of August 1836, the new engineer after having examined the “Dorchester” tried it in a test of speed.  He attached four wagon cars to the locamotive and arrived at St. Jean in 41 minutes. (37) The 9th of Aug. the Gazette announced the repeat of  the operations.

“We are glad to learn that the locamotive engine is again in operation on the St Jean Railroad”, (39) Ziba Pangborn stayed for a long time as an employee of the wooden track roads.  His contribution to the first Public Railroad in Canada was rewarded in 1852 when the employees of this company, presented him with a watch and chain.  It was engraved with his name and a portrait of the “Dorchester”.  We were able to find this object. Never the less, the reputation of Pangborn was great, he was considered the master mechanic of this railroad.

“He became Master Mechanic of the Champlain & St. Lawrence Railroad Company”. (39)

“The Pangborns were originally from Vermont.  As to George Washington, he became the first regular engineer assigned to the locamotive, Moise Latulippe who fed the boiler on the  “Princess Victoria” (40) occupied the same job on the Dorchester. (41). . . “

Another Pangburn researcher has joined our ranks – James J. PANGBURN.

His line runs hand in hand with Frank PANGBURN ( See Pangburn Letter Vol.1. No. 2, Pg.  1-3).

James’ line branches off from James PANGBURN (See pg. 2. # 5 – JAMES C. PANGBURN.)

He has submitted some material taken from “History of Stearns County Minnesota” by Wm Bell Mitchell, published by H. C. Cooper in Chicago in 1915 –

“DAVID PANGBURN, retired brick manufacturer, living in Sauk Centre, was born in Scotland, New York, August 27, 1832, son of James D. and Polly (Houck) Pangburn.  He received his education in his native state, and there grew to manhood.  In 1864 he located here permanently, and engaged in farming.  Soon afterward, he went into making brick.  Later he bought the large farm on which the present plant is located.  It is on the shore of Sauk Lake, just over the line in Todd County.  Here he has carried on general farming and done a large business in brickmaking.

Being on the shore of the lake he has been able to raft his bricks, and then tow the rafts to Sauk Centre with his barge.  The bricks, both red and gray are in wide favor, and nearly all the buildings in Sauk Centre and Melrose are constructed from them.  Since dividing his farm among his sons, Mr Pangburn has purchased a home in Sauk Centre, where he will spend his declining years in well deserved rest after a busy life and filled with successful endeavor.  He has been an active man in everything that had for its object the progress and betterment of the community, and for several years he served as supervisor of Sauk Centre township.  Although eighty-two years of age he is still hale and hardy.

Every fall he goes on hunting expeditions to the pine woods, and never fails to bring home  a good bag of game.

David Pangburn was married May 9, 1854 to Hattie P. Davenport, born in Saratoga county, New York, January 25, 1835.  They have had eleven children: George N., born December 3, 1856; Hattie A., February 22, 1858; Fred L., August 4, 1859; William E., March 31, 1861; Frances A.,

September 30, 1862; Arthur M., September 10, 1864; Reginald H., May 4, 1866; James B., November 17, 1867; David A., June 16, 1869; Elmer F., March 20, 1871;  (died June 18, 1873); and Edwin F., May 15, 1874

JAMES C. PANGBURN came to Sauk Centre in 1866 and took homestead.  He lived to see himself the founder of one of the largest families in this vicinity. In 1882, after a long life, filled with useful accomplishments, he died at the good old age of eighty years.

Mr. Pangburn married Polly Houck, a native of New York State.  She died in 1898 at the age of ninety years.  In the family there are 10 children: Margaret, Nicholas, David, Magdalena, Julia, Paulina, Hiram, William, Henry and Frank S.  It is a fact worth of note that Margaret, the oldest of these children, is still living, at the age of ninety years.

ARTHUR m. PANGBURN was born September 10, 1864, son of David and Hattie P. (Davenport) Pangburn. He is engaged in farming in Todd county, just over the line from Sauk Centre township. Arthur N. Pangburn was first married to Della Fredinburg.  After her death he married Lizzie Knudson.

D. A. PANGBURN was born in Sauk Centre township, June 16, 1869, son of David and Hattie P. (Davenport) Pangburn.  He is a mason by trade and does general contracting and building.  Mr Pangburn married Agnes Diebel, and they had five children: Hazel H., May, Earl, Edith and Marie, all born in Sauk Centre. The family faith is that of the Congregational Church.

Cemetery inscriptions in Brown County, Ohio

Pres. Red Oak built 1799 by Matthew Davidson of Union Twp., Brown Co., Ohio near Ripley.  Old cemetery stones in fairly good condition.  A new Pangburn stone placed on south side of cemetery. There are 2 district lots here, old and new.  Oldest one is enclosed with rock wall.  Over 100 stones standing.

John & Mary Pangburn -  New monument – d. 1849 – 62 yrs (with 10 names on it). – Lois states they could not get into the cemetery in early May due to grass and snakes.  (Editor note:  We know that feeling  well!! The last cemetery we visited in rural New England, it took us 5 minutes to walk from the gate to the Stone we were searching – but – it only took us a few seconds to get out once we spotted our first snake!!!)

Pisgah Ridge Cemetery

Cemetery is combination of Whites/Pangburns/Davidson/ families.

Lois adds – we went looking for Samuel PANGBURN and George and Eliz

DAVIDSON.  Since we know they lived in Jefferson Twp., Brown Co., Ohio, we figured we see them in Pres. Cemetery closest to Red Oak.  There is another graveyard in Red Oak, almost gone. We did not go there.

There must be a connection between Matthew Davidson and our Robert Davison, Sr., father of George B. 1783-4.  I did notice a letter that mentioned Samuel PANGBURN was also living in Byrd Twp. Over near Decatur, Ohio.

Okay, researchers – anyone know more about this connection??
