The PANGBURN LETTER is published at the cost of the Editor. The intent is non-profit and is to be used to disseminate information to others interested in the Pangborn lines. This publication will print data submitted by anyone who has Pangburn information. Perhaps by sharing with each other, we will be able to put together the Pangburn story.
************************************************
Was your Pangburn an early settler of OHIO? Can you prove this line or any line back to 1830 in OHIO? Ohio offers certificates for early settlers, but best of all, they also offer a pioneer medal for those who settled early. For more information write:

And dont forget the other states that offer pioneer certificates. Check with the Genealogical Societies in your state to find out if they are offering these certificates.

Maurine Seeley offers some additional information on Francis PANGBORN as referred to in Pangburn Letter, Vol 4, No. 1, pg 9.
Maurine states:
1. Father: There is proof that Francis is the son of Samuel, and the death certificate for Samuel gives his father as Noah. On this certificate, no mothers name is given. I have seen no proof that Noah married Azubah Pangborn.
2. Mother: The death certificate for Sarah Pangborn lists her father as Thomas Tibbits and mother as Auerlia (no surname).
3. Wife: Annie WALROD, daughter of Harvey WALROD and Betsy Matilda
CHURCH. Harvey and Betsey lived in Otsego and Chenango Counties, New York before moving to Chautauqua County, probably in the 1840s. Harvey was the son of Peter A. WALRADT, not WALROTH, and is descended from Palatines in the Montgomery County, New York area. Parents of Betsy are Silas and Betsey West CHURCH.
4. Recently, I spoke with my Aunt Rachel Brevoort WEAVER regarding the statement that Francis spent many years in the hospital. Her reply, which confirmed my recollection of family stories, is that Francis lived, after 1908, when his wife died, six months each year (summer) with Ruth Pangborn BREVOORT, and the remaining months with his daughter Myrtle (Clarinda) RHINEHART, in Silver Creek, New York. John RHINEHART, husband of Myrtle, owned and operated a hospital in Silver Creek, and the family living quarters were in the hospital. This may account for the statement that Francis was in the hospital for many years.
Rachel also informed me that Francis had cataract surgery, wore very heavy glasses and could see very little. This may account for the guardianship.
Francis died 4 July 1925 at the home of his daughter Ruth and is buried in the Fredonia Cemetery in Fredonia, New York.
5. Children: Clarinda M. (Myrtle) married John RHINEHART who served in the Civil War. Death dates are not known for Clarinda or John. She died before I can remember however, he lived until middle or late 1930s.
Harvey Duane married Chloe GRAY and I nothing of this family.
Ruth (my grandmother), married Earl Carson BREVOORT, and she died 15 Dec 1963 in Stockton, Chatauqua Co., New York, and is buried in Centralia Cemetery in that town.
Mabel married Herbert HILLER, resided in Silver Creek, New York where he was a mailman and possible Postmaster, Mabel died in the late 1930s.
5. Residences: Samuel is found in the 1850 Madison County, New York Federal Census in Fenner Township, with a son Francis. After the Civil War, Samuel and his family moved to Chatauqua County, New York where he and Francis lived the remainder of their lives. Stockton and Carroll are Townships in Chatauqua County. Stockton is also a village. A village in Carroll Township is Frewsburg, where Francis and Annie were married. Sinclairville is a town (not Township) in Chautauqua County. Viola Pangburn Roberts was mixed up on her geography. ( Page 11 ?? )

Maurine also states that she is working on her CHURCH, WALROD, and BREVOORT line as well as still searching for the parents and wife of Samuel PANGBORN. Maurine will share information on any of these lines.
And to Maurine --- a big thank you for all the information on Francis PANGBORN. Corrections and additions are always welcome and necessary if we ever want to get these PANGBORN/ PANGUBRNS straightened out!

And here is a request from a new addition to the Pangburn researchers -- Judy Kelble is searching for Betsy PANGBORN (b. 1 August 1769) who married 4 March 1788 Ezra SQUIRES (b. Cannan, CT and enlisted in service in Vermont). They were living in Elyria, Lorain Co., Ohio in 1832 and 1839 and are buried in Lorain County.
We referred Judy to the Pangburn Letter, Vol 2, No. 1, pg. 3 this is the same line as Gertrude Addicott is searching. Both are still looking for the parents of Betsey PANGBORN. Can anyone help?
Judy Keble included a little bit of history to help other researchers. In the Ohio Vets Home )Sandusky, Ohio) there is a listing:
William H. PANGBORN
b. @ 1880
d. 30 Dec. 1971
Case # 4925
Anyone know anything else about this William PANGBORN??

A short exerpt from Adirondak Frontier Stories of Keene Flats After 1776 by Charles Holt, publ 1976:
Mr Harvey Branch relates that after Benjamin Payne arrived here Timothy and Nathaniel Pangborn set up residence in the town of Keene. John Pangborn settle near the outlet of Johns Brook giving the stream his name.

Nancy Smith is still searching for her PANGBURN ancestor. Her line originally appeared in the Pangburn Letter, September, 1984, Vol 2, No 2, page 5. She is searching for the parents of Samuel Pangburn, born 1809 New York. She writes:
&ldots;.My goal is to find Samuel Pangburns parents. He married about 1835 in Seneca County, New York so I figure his parents were in that area then. On page 5 and 6 of the last Pangburn Letter (April 1986, Vol. 4, No. 1.), quoting Viola Pangburn Roberts, there is a mention of Joseph Pangburn of Vermont and Essex County, New York. Some of Violas note are a little hard for me to follow. I am trying to check on some of her information, especially about Josephs son, John, who was in Hector in 1820. Hector was in Seneca County in 1817, very near the village in which my Samuel met his wife. The 1820 Census lists him as
John PANGHAM (Hector was part of Tompkins County). I wrote to the Hector officials who have no mention of PANGHAMS or PANGBURNS. Viola says he lived in South Onondaga County, but I havent found that yet. I did find the Richard in Newfield but cant figure if Richard is the son of Joseph.
There is a Samuel PANGBURN in Salina, Onondaga County, in 1830 who I cant account for, but his age and family size disqualifies him from being the Samuel I am researching.
The Samuel PANGBURN in Decatur, Otsego County, in 1830 may be the son of Peter Pangburn. He is in the age range of my ancestor and there is a possibility he may be my Samuel. But yet I tend to believe that my Samuel is the son of John (of Hector). The location sways me plus the possibility of explaining his apparent Canadian connection. My Samuel was in Southern Ontario 1840-1843 era and was a witness at Hiram Pangburns wedding 18453 in London, Ontario. I suspect Samuel somehow connects to these Canadians (Hiram, James, etc) mentioned in the first and second issues of The Pangburn Letter in the lines of Mrs. Mallette and Shirley Wainright. Hiram born 1815 United States, James born 1802 place not stated. I wonder if they were brothers or cousins?
Some of Josephs nephews apparently were Loyalists. My Samuel may have gone to Canada to be with relatives. His stay seemed relatively brief and I do not know what influence his wifes family may have had on their plans.
So Joseph had descendents both in Canada and Central New York. His son John had a large family including a 10 year old son in 1820 right age for my Samuel. John had a brother, Samuel, too&ldots;
Nancy, thank you for taking the time to try and prove AND disprove the material printed in the The Pangburn Letter. This is the purpose of The Pangburn Letter to try to DOCUMENT our heritage.
It appears that your research is on good solid ground. Your suppositions are good but now were going to turn to our other researchers for help. Okay, -- who can help her with her line? What comments can you offer on her conjectures? Any suggestions on what she should try next?
And here is some data that Nancy has submitted to help others.
Obtained from Westport New York Historian, Anne Sherman, and was taken from H. P. Smiths History of Essex County New York, publ 1885.
The first town meeting for this town (Elizabethtown) was held on the 3rd day of April, 1798, at the dwelling house of David Callender at which was proceeded and made choice of Town Officers as follows:
Supervisor, Ebenezer Arnold;...... Overseers of highways..... eighth district, Joseph Pangburn .....The Town of Keen
Benjamin Payne was the first man who came into the town to stay. He came by marked trees from Westport and brought his goods in a jumper or rude vehicle constructed of tow long poles which served the purpose at once of thills, traces and wheels. He died before 1800. He was
Phineas Nortons father-in-law.
Timothy and Nathanial Pangburn, brothers, were the next arrivals. The former died before 1823 and the latter about 1830.

Revolutionary Soldiers
Samuel Pangborn died in this town in 1843, and the notice of his death in the Essex County Times declares that he was age 86 years, and had been a soldier in the Revolution, fighting at Brandywine and Yorktown. In the list of pensioners after the war of 1812 we find both the names of Samuel and David Pangborn. This family seems to have been here very early, as one Joseph Pangburn was made pathmaster at the first town meeting in 1798.

Austinburg was originally known as Austins Camp (1799) named for founder, Eliphant Austin. Then for 13 years it was known as Richfield.
It is now known as Austinburg, Ohio. According to local history, the settlers came from Connecticut. It is not known if this PANGBURN family came from there.

Okay, researchers, -- Lois Charles needs some help. She writes:
We believe that Elizabeth's husband died shortly after they moved to Ohio around 1820 in either Brown or Clermont County. But all the information that we obtained about the family was mainly due to land records between Elizabeth and her children. We wonder if perhaps she remarried for she disappears from the 1830 census. We are seeking information pertaining to the DAVISON/DAVIDSON and PANGBURN connection.
Also seek information on the parents of George Davidson.

And still another request for help ---
Robb Osborn is searching for Polly PANGBURN who married Benjamin HOWE prior to 1803 in Albany Co., NY. One of their daughters, married Timothy PUFFER, either in Albany or Tioga Co., NY in the early 1830's. They also had a son Hyram, b. 14 Nov 1803 in Albany Co., NY.
Polly?Maria/Mary PENBURN/PANGBORN may be the daughter of Richard
PANGBURN who married a Van Etten because both Richard PANGBURN and Benjamin HOWE went to western New York (Finger Lakes area) by 1810. Both removed again to Tioga County and Broom Co., area by the 1820's.
Here's another question for you researchers. Any more info you can add?
