PANGBURN LETTER VOLUME 3 , Letter 1
APRIL 1985
Donn E. Wagner, Editor - 5245 Walton Street, Long Beach, CA 90815 Number I
The PANGBURNLETTER is published at the cost of the Editor. The intent is non-profit and is to be used to disseminate information to others interested in the Pangburn lines. This publication will print data submitted by anyone who has Pangburn information. Perhaps by sharing with each other, we will be able to put together the Pangburn story.
Have you ever tasted Pangburn candy? Did you ever wonder if the founders of this company were from your branch of the Pangbum family? Well, thanks to Don Pangburn we now know something about the founder. Don's mother was an avid genealogist and Don inherited all of her research notes. Don has been " burning the midnight oil" inputing this information into his IBM personal computer. Don, we look forward to your help when the project is completed'
Following is a letter Don's mother received from the Pangbum Candy Company ...
Pangburn's Western Style Chocolates Pangburn Company Inc. 1301-31 W. 7th St., P.O. Box 65 Fort Worth 1, Texas September 25, 1964
Dear Mrs. Pangburn
It was good of you to write us, and we are certainly happy to know we have a Pangburn Booster" who is a Pangburn! You will be interested in knowing that this company was founded by Mr. Hugh Pangburn a Fort Worth Druggist 50 years ago-- we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary' Mr. Pangburn passed away in 1929, however, Mrs. Pangburn remained active in the business until her death two years ago. Their daughter, Ida Nelle, is Treasurer of the Company and makes her home here in Fort Worth. Possibly she will be available when you do come to Fort Worth
Thanks again for your letter -- when you are in Fort Worth, please be sure to pay us a visit.
Sincerely,
FRANK DARK Sales Manager
Next we give you a letter written by the founder's daughter, Ida Nelle Pangburn, to Don's mother, Mrs. Virgil Pangburn (letter is undated).
Dear Mrs. Pangburn,
Many apologies for being so long in answering your very nice letter. 1 have searched in vain, so far, for the book of the Pangburn family. It is one of those things 1 surely thought could be found with no trouble. Well, so far. it has eluded my efforts.
1 My grandfather, Henry K. Pangburn brought his family to Texas, from Kentucky, in 1876. Pangburn's are all but extinct in this part of the country. In fact, 1 am the last of the line. When the book is found I feel sure I can answer some of your questions and will be delighted to do so. Thank you for saying such nice things about the candy and being such good customers
My father founded the business fifty years ago and we have distributors through drug stores all over the United States.
Please forgive my rudeness in not writing sooner. Thank you for the letter and if and when I have anything to offer regarding your questions, I'll let you know.
Sincerely,
IDA NELLE PANGBURN
And still another letter from Ida Nelle...
Dear Relative: 4-14-65
A belated thanks for your Christmas card. I did appreciate being remembered. Finally, I have rounded up via D.A. R. records from Washington D.C. my pedigree from Randolph- Pangburn family history (enclosed).
My file of correspondence from Pangburns is growing since distribution of candy has covered the entire United States. San Francisco has quite a few Pangburn's.
I find it very interesting as my branch of the family has reached a climax with me. My father was the only one to marry in his family and I am his only child. His sisters were very interested in family ties and would never forgive my losing the Pangburn records. I regret it too.
Sincerely, IDA NELLE PANGBURN

(The above material was also submitted by Emily Pangburn). And now, let s go back to the Pangburn Letter, Vol.1, No. 2, page 6, and you will note that the above information fills in some blank spots in Kay Reed's and Donald Pangburn's s line. Maybe if we all keep working someday we'll know the whole picture! By the way, Barbara, Nancy and John L Pangburn were twins as shown in Kay's line, and Samuel was his brother

In 1982 1 discovered a Stone cousin of my fathers, living at age 83 in Battleground, Washington. I went to visit her and she told me of the Stone family bible. Also told me her grandmother's name was Emily Pangborn and she herself was named for her Emily Pangborn Stone. The bible showed that the first Emily was daughter of Ziba Pangborn. My next visit to a library I found the Bible of Beebee Pangborn with Ziba as a son.
I am glad to get a bit more on Peter from your PANGBORN LETTERS. The Richard who m. a Van Etten is interesting (I was aware of it) as I am an VANATTA, descended from Jacobus Van Etten of Kingston, NY. Also from v. I # 1, Stephen Jr. is of interest as another child of my Stephen. I thought his family to be incomplete in my records. On page 5 a comment about the recruiting of people to NJ - - - my VANNATTA family went from Kingston to Sussex Co. and then Warren Co. NJ in 1715. (Van Etten gradually changed to Vannatta).
Also on page 5, v. I # I Timothy is shown as son of Richard. I would like the source. I had put him into the family of Stephen but probably am off base in that He lived at Cornwall CT and m. Deborah Youngs. (Barber records)
Page 9, v. 1, # I Zeba Pangborn is MY Ziba ! I just found that record at Salt Lake last week, so now I know he did not go to Quebec until after the War of 1812. 1 don't know whether any of my own line was LOYALIST, but have not found them on any lists.
Page 7, v. I # 2, 1 wonder whether Azuba Pangborn might be a daughter or granddaughter of Azuba Brown who m. Joseph Pangborn Jr. at Cornwall CT? I need more into on Azuba Brown. See my generation #4.
The PANGBORN who left his children to be raised by a RUSCOE ... the Ruscoe line was related to the Knapp line and I have all that if anyone needs it.
Is my Azuba Brown descended from Peter Brown? Nicolas Knapp married the widow of Peter Brown in their old age at Rye, NY.

I fear I have made assumptions, the same as have others! So little real facts and yet so many scattered facts and a great temptation to put them together. I will be reading avidly everything you find.

Obituary
MARY ANNE (PANGBURN) TREBILCOCK
Age 59 years, 8 months, 24 days, died June 25, 1885. She was born in Toronto, Canada on I October 1826. In 1844 she was married to John Trebilcock, in 1849 they moved to Kenosha County Wisconsin. They became the First settlers of what is now Danwille Township, Worth County, Iowa. Their nearest neighbors being four miles distant. She endured the hardships and loneliness of a frontier life and lived to see what was then a wild country, become thickly settled. Mary A. Trebilcock died June 25, 1885, of dropsy after a long and painful illness. She never complained because she had to suffer, but always seemed to be resigned to her Maker's will. The funeral took place at the old homestead, it being the home of her son, Robert- Rev. Buck delivered a very touching sermon and a large number of relatives and friends followed her remains to the cemetery near her home, beside her departed husband. For many years she lived a Christian life. She died, trusting in the Lord She leaves a large family of children and grandchildren and an aged mother.

Records from the Court House in Fonda, Montgomery Co., NY
German Flats, Herkimer
Ruth Pangburn and Fred Gettman, a daughter, b. 24 Jun 1812
(Ruth Pangburn ws the daughter of Pete Pangburn and his wife
Maria Westervelt who lived in Herkimer Co. 1805-1815.)
Richard Pangburn of Scotch Plains, NJ, probably was the son of William, son of Richard. While it is impossible to find sufficient data to prove this, the records being burned during the wars even the census of 1790, one William Pangburn seemingly lived in Somerset Co., NJ. Richard Pangburn of whom we are writing lived in Bridgewater, Somerset Co., NJ in 1763. A son Peter was born there and later moved to Scotch Plains where his father and mother were married
It is supposed that Richard Pangburn was the grandson of Richard Pangburn who "Rolls" in NYC 1696 and later moved to Woodbridge, NJ. The name Richard was repeated in successive generations of that particular branch of the Pangburn family.
Peter Pangburn, oldest son of Richard Pangburn, was born in Bridgewater, Somerset Co., NJ, 1763; removed to Scotch Plains, a very small settlement near Westfield, NJ, near Plainfield where other pangburn families lived and lived there during his service in the Revolutionary War. After the war closed he went to Bergen Co. to work and there met Marie (Maritje) Westervelt of the well known family of that time of which there are now many descendents scattered through the east and west.
They were married in Schrallenburgh Reformed Dutch Church in 1784 not 1787. From Bergen Co., they followed relatives to Braodilbin, Fulton Co., NY, but lived there a short time.
To Warren, Herkimer Co., NY, they removed, buying a piece of land in 1805 and selling it in 1811. Then to Worcester and Butternuts, Otsego Co., they went but finally landed in Hampden, Geauga Co., Ohio. Peter Pangburn died there. Where the father and mother are buried it is not known yet. There was a large family of boys and girls. They are listed elsewhere in these papers. One war record states he died in Butternuts, NY in 1832.
Richard Pangburn, oldest son of Peter Pangburn, was born April 12, 1788. The tombstone record is wrong. He was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church in NYC, May 1788. The Dutch Church records are very accurate. He removed with his parents to Herkimer Co., NY and married Nancy Gay, daughter of John Gay of Warrentown, NY, 1811. She was born 1795 or 1796. Her tombstone record is wrong, To this union were born thirteen children. They continued to reside in Herkimer Co. until about 1836 when they removed to Palermo, Oswego Co., NY and lived there until he died in 1850. Nancy Pangburn moved to Clyde, NY, where her son William lived and died there in 1863. Richard and Nancy are buried in Roosevelt Cemetery, Palermo, NY.
He had fought in the War of 1812. A flag is placed on his grave each year his tombstone is a war kind. (E.C. Starr states in his history of Cornwall, CT, this Richard was the son of Samuel Pangburn of that place but the writer can find no records of this connection. The writer has always understood that her great grandparents were of the Dutch folk. There are no Dutch in Samuel's family, ancestors nor descendents.)
Peter's children were Richard, Abraham, Peter, John, Nathaniel, Samuel, Ruth, Mary, Dorothy, Lydia, Betsey, Almira, Letty.
His son Richard's children were Richard, Peter, John, Charles, Jedediah, William, Mary, Betsy, Lavina, Dorothy, Lydia, Clarrisy, Nancy. Note six repetitions. No, seven.
Abraham Pangburn, second son of Peter Pangburn, b. 1789; bap. in the Reformed Dutch Church, 1789 removed to Volney, Oswego Co., NY, before 1820. See CENSUS RECORD 1820.
Pangborns and Pangburns of the Revolutionary War
Peter Pangburn was born to Richard and Ruth Pangburn who were married in Scotch Plains, NJ, 1761, in the Baptist Church there. According to records in the Adjutant General's Office, Trenton, NJ, he died in Butternuts, Otsego Co., NY. She died in Hamblen, Ohio, Sept. 1845. She was Maritje (Marie) Westervelt, daughter of Abraham and Maria Eshley Westervelt Peter and Maria were married in the Schrallenburgh Reformed Dutch Church about 1784. ( one record states 1787) one can see that is wrong .
The children were as follows:
Richard Pangburn, b. 12 Apr 1788; bp NYC 18 May 1788 Abraham Pangburn, bp Nov 1789
Peter Pangburn
Nathaniel Pangburn
John Pangburn, Norwich, Chenango Co., NY Samuel Pangburn
Ruth Pangburn, m. Fred Gettman, dau. Maria Betsey Pangburn, m. Stewart
Polly Pangburn, in. Gott
Lydia Pangburn, in. DuPuy Lettie Pangburn, m. Wood Mary Pangburn, m. Smith Elmira Pangburn, in. Padgett
From the Veteran's Administration, Washington, DC...
"The record of Peter Pangburn is given herein as shown in the papers on file in his claim for pension, based upon his services in the Revolutionary War."
Peter Pangburn (shown also Pangboun) was born in the year 1763, in Bridgewater, Somerset Co., NJ; the names of his parents not shown. He resided in Somerset Co., NJ, during the Rev. War.
After the War, he resided in New Jersey, in New York City, and in Montgomery Co., Herkimer Co., and Otsego Co., of New York State. In June 1832, he resided in Butternuts Otsego Co., NY, to which place he had moved from Worcester in that same county.
He applied Oct 15, 1832, for pension which might have been due on account of his service in the Rev. War. He stated then that he enlisted about Nov. 1, 1777 and served one month as a private in Capt. Ross' Company, Col. Wind's New Jersey regiment and marched to Scotch Plains, New Jersey-, that immediately afterwards, he volunteered and served three years as a private in Capt. Ten Eyck's Company, Col. Wind's New Jersey regiment during which he was in several skirmishes and was guarding the sea coast from the enemy.
In 1844. Peter Pangburn, or Pangboun, was a resident of Geauga Co., Ohio. He died in Sept. 1845, aged 82 years. The soldier's widow, Maria Pangburn. died March 4, 1849.
In 1852, the names of the surviving children of Peter Pangburn and Maria Pangburn were: Abraham Pangburn. Nathaniel Pangbum, John Pangburn of Chenango Co., NY, Samuel Pangburn, Ruth Gethman, Betsy Stewart, Polly Gott, Lydia DuPuy, Letty Wood, Mary Smith, Elmira Padgett stated that they were well acquainted with the soldier's widow, Maria Pangburn ."
Peter Pangburn was born in Bridgewater, Somerset Co., NJ in 1763, the son of Richard and Ruth Pangburn who were married in the Scotch Plains Baptist Church May 2, 1761. He died in Hamblen, Geauga, Ohio, Sept. 1845. He married Maria (Maritje) Westervelt- daughter of Abraham and Maria Eshley Westervelt about 1784 in the Schraalenburgh Dutch Reformed Church.

Peter Pangburn and his wife, Marie, bought land in Warren, Herkimer Co., NY, in 1805 and sold that land in 1811, moving to Worcester, Otsego Co., NY. They had come from Broadilbin, Fulton Co., NY.
A tradition in the family that Richard Pangburn, father of the author of these papers, was descended from Dutch ancestry lead her to study deeply into the subject. She has decided that the oldest son of Peter Pangburn whose name was Richard Pangburn, born in New York and baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church in I 788 was Identical with the Richard Pangburn living in Columbia , Herkimer

Co., in I 820 (CENSUS 1820). In Warren Twp. lived John Gay 1910 with a daughter Nancy Gay, whom Richard Pangburn married in 1811. (See War of 1812 records regarding Richard Pangburn.) The tombstone inscription in Palermo, Oswego Co., NY, does not agree exactly but very nearly. Neither does the record of Nancy agree with the statement found in her deposition on file in the Archives so it is assumed the son didn't know, exactly, the ages of his parents.
And one last note... the War Record of David Pangburn shows the following.,
"War of 1812; David Pangburn was a sergeant in Capt. John
Cook's N.Y. Mil. com. by Col. Fred Gettman... "

We understand that some of you have received correspondence from Sharon Taylor, offering you a book on the Pangbu rn genealogy. This is not from our address list ! Please, use caution when considering the purchase of her book or that of Beatrice Bayley. The books consist mainly of names and addresses of Pangburns from various telephone directories, and we might add not always current addresses.
These books will not do your genealogy for you !
We still intend to send letters and copies of The Pangburn Letter to the names you have given us from your phone books. One slight difference... we don't charge for The Pangburn Letter...but Sharon Taylor and Beatrice Bayley charge for their services!
