Pangburn Letters Volume 1 , Letter 1

Volume 1 , Letter 1   (Transcribed by Rick Pollard )

Vol. 1 ,  Page 1

This first issue of the PANGBURN LETTER is published at the cost of the Editor. The intent is non-profit and Is to be used to distribute information to others interested in the PANGBURN lines. Input from readers on their data is the most important function of this publication.

We will start by delving into one of the main controversies - the spelling of the NAME. Early Dutch records in Albany and Schenectady County, N.Y., show PENBERN, PANBERN, PAGBURN, PLANGBERN and finally PANGBURN. Later we  have PANGBORN, PANGBORNE, PANG-BOURNE and PANGBURN.

This list could go on ad nauseam but all the variations seem to be actually the same family if we go back far enough.

Town records of Oyster Bay, N.Y. reveal the earliest record of our surname A "PETTER PANGBORNE, " cordwinder, residing in Oyster Bay, on 10 May 1682 indentured his second son" Edmond PANGBORNE, as an "apprintize" to John Rogers, Husbandman of the same town counties.

New Jersey seems to he the next landing place of the family PANGBURN. Many records are found of this surname in Mammouth and Middlesex Counties .

We later have a move to Allegheny County. PA by part of the family and from there to Brown Ohio. Another branch of the PANGBURNS move from New Jersey to Albany and Schenectady. Counties, N.Y., These are purely my observations and an over simplification of the moves of the PANGBURNS. Obviously, there were migrations all over the country at various times.

Now, that is briefly the way the migration seem to have taken place. There is much written on the various relation ships, but, how much is fact and how much conjecture ... we will leave to others

This publication will print data submitted anyone who has PANGBURN information perhaps by sharing With each other, our bits of information no matter how sketchy, we will be to put together the PANGBURN story.

We hope to continue this newsletter. but to do so we must have your material on PANGBURNS (no matter how you spell it ! I'll ask only that you include a 20C stamp -- we will stand the cost of printing for now

Mrs. Ernst is having problems proving the parentage of Benjamin Franklin PANGBURN but believes it may be Richard PANGBURN as shown in this copy taken from the

1850 Federal Census for N.Y.: Pg. 320, Root Twp., Montgomery Co., N. Y

Marie (or Maud) could have been the mother of Richard - no solid evidence.

Mrs. Ernst also believes that Benjamin Franklin PANGBURN may be related to the PANGBURN line listed in DAR # 296368:

RichardPANGBURN(son of William PANGBURA9 b 22 May 1748 Woodbridge, N.J., d 24 Aug 1832 Owego, N.Y, in 28 Sep 1769 Catalynte ,Van Etten at Albany (Dutch church.)

Benjamin married Maria 12 Aug 1798. She was born 27 Dec 1778 and died 3 Jul 1850. In 1850, she would have been 72, (73 in December.) A good possibility that she is the same Marie who lived next to Richard in Montgomey County.

Okay all you fellow PANGBURN researchers out there. Who can help Mrs. Sue Ernst prove this line??

Mr. Richard Fremon, 32 Barn Owl Dr., Hackettstown, N.J. 07840 writes:

A many times Great Grandfather of mine, one Charles Rowlison, married a Mary PANGBORN 28 Jan 1760 at the Scotch Plains (N.J.) Baptist Church. His son Isaiah was probably Mary's son, bit could have been the son of Charles' first wife. Perhaps someone could help Mr. Fremon on this??

Mr. Fremon has also included some miscellancous PANGBURN data to share with his fellow researchers.

The early N.J. PANGBOURNS evidently came in through Woodbridge, which was founded in 1666. The PANGBOURNS evidently started arriving during the few years either side of 1700 and some of them, at least, had previously lived in New York City, A William and his sons Richard and Peter are identified as first settlers of Rahway. Richard is known to have been there as early as 1698 and to have married Lehdya, daughter of John CONGER, who arrived in Rahway even earlier than that Edmund and Stephen evidently arrived in Woodbridge shortly after 1700. They and their wives became members of the newly organized Church of Christ there between 1708 and 1710. Edmund's wife was Lydia and Stephen's wife was Joanna Thornell. There is a record of the birth of Edmund's son John in 1704. Edmund died in 1711.

The following is some additional data extracted from one of Mr. Fremon's letters:

There was a Samuel. PANGBORN who (1) bought land from John Shotwell in 1743, (2) sold land to George Thomson in 1744, (3) was mentioned as the former owner of some land in the will of Spencer Elston in 1755 (this land was in Woodbridge), (4) witnessed the will of David Campbell, weaver, of Woodbridge in 1760, (5) witnessed the will of John Morris, Yeoman, of Elizabeth Borough in 1762, (6) with his wife, Martha, administered the estate of William Mars, farmer, of Middlesex County, in 1779, (7) witnessed the will of John Rawlison of Woodbridge in 1776, (8) witnessed the will of Moses Bishop (a relative of the Shotwells) of Woodbridge in 1784, (9) witnessed the will of Thomas Baker, yeoman, of Elizabeth Township in 1787.

**A few other small items .............

Peter PANGBORN was in Col Thomas Fanner's Colonial Regulars of Woodbridge in 1715.

Stephen Pangborn's wife is shown as Joanna Thornell in some records and as Joan Tuttle in other places.

Stephen PANGBORN, born about 1695, was son of Stephen Sr. and Joan. Stephen Jr. was married to (1) Rebecca IMLAY (d c. 1741 in Upper Freehold) and (2) Anna MONTGOMERIE. Stephen and Rebecca had sons Lines and William and a daughter Rebekah Jemsen. Stephen and Anna ended up living in the South Ward of Perth Amboy. Stephen Jr. (1) was executor of his father- in- law's estate (William Imlay) in 1741, (2) with Robert Imlay witnessed the will of Joseph Kinnan, cooper, of Upper Freehold, (3) with Robert and Rebekah witnessed the will of Mary Snow of Trenton in 1747, (4) participated in the inventory of the estate of Richard Stevens of Upper Freehold in 1745, (5) was mentioned in the Will of Robert English of Freehold of 1768, (6) witnessed the will of Alice Imlay of Upper Freehold in 1761,

Vol.1 Page 5

(7) Witnessed the will of Robert Montgomerie of Uper Freehold in 1766 (he was father-in-law to ---i Jr. and Robert English), and (8) died intestate in the South Ward of Perth Amboy in 1774. Some other Stephen Pangborn witnessed the will of John Rawlison in 1776.

Richard PANGBORN was alleged to be a son of William. Richard was listed in the New York City Census in 1696. He was a first settler of Rahway in 1698, at which time he leased a house and land from Jefry Jones. In 1709 he witnessed the will of Stephen Tuttle, cordwinder (shoemaker), of Woodbridge and in 1710 he witnessed the Will of John Conger, a planter, of Woodbridge.(Conger actually lived in Rahway, so .hat must have been considered part of Woodbridge Township at that time). Richard also was in a lawsuit vs. John Worth in 1711, owned land in 1714, sold land to William Bingla in 1719, witnessed the Will of John Ilslie in 1715, and was listed as a debtor to the estate of John Blanchard of Elizabethtown in 1730.

And one last little bit of information from Mr. Fremon: During the late 1600's there was a lot of deliberate recruiting of New York City, Long Island, and Connecticut people to come to New Jersey.

Mrs. William Malette, 9315 Sanelac, Detroit, Mich, 48224 submits the following:

The family has always presumed that the PANGBORN line has been Canadian from the word "go." The PANGBORNS, after further re-search, may have been Loyalists , thus their migration to Canada -Her line follows ...

JAMES PANGBORN - born 23 Jun 1802 d 19 Sep 1885. Resided Ridgetown, Ontario,Canada. Later Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Mich., married Elizabeth MARSH (b 19 Oct ___? , d 12 Mar 1890)

In one of Mrs. Malette's letters, she writes:

In Romantic Kent, 1626-1952 by Victor Lauriston, I found an item - in the village of Highgate, Orford Township one of the first settlers was Hiram MARSH in 1840. A little later came as James and Arthur PANGBURN

She has included a copy of the County Kent (formerly Bothwell Co.) Ontario, Canada census:

Yeoman James and Matron Elizabeth (Marsh) PANGBURN were my great-great grandparents. Sarah Ann PANGBURN was my great grand-mother. I have a wee book Honey Drops (Biblical Scriptures) with the inscription S. A. Pangborn I st 1860, which belonged to her. . . printed in Philadelphia.

This family moved to Unadilla Township, Livingston Co., Mich. and are shown on the. 1880 census.Howard Twp. must include the town Ridgetown, because that's where they lived in Canada In a booklet printed in Ridgetown in 1930 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the town's incorporation I find the names James and M-J. PANGBURN as being officials in the temperance organization in the 1860's.

In looking over my notes from long ago, I find that there were two other PAAIGBURN men in Orford Twp. named Hiram and Thomas PANG-BURN. They very well could have been brothers to James. Jame's son, Isaac, is staying at Hiram's at the age of 17... probably helping with chores.

Mrs. Malette notes that she has been finding her line with the name spelled PANGBORN and PANGBURN. A check of her Coleman Family Bible brought over from England with birth dates starting in the 1700's revealed the following:

Sarah Ann PANGBORN married Walter Coleman ... 1864.

Mrs. Seely has obtained copies of Samuel PANGBORN'S Civil War pension file which shows he was a Pvt. in Company F, 176th Regt N.Y. Vol. The Files further show that he enlisted in the fall of 1862, that he had lived in town of Nelson, Madison Co., N.Y. for 9 years prior to entering the service, was captured at Brashear City, LA on 23 Jun 1863 and paroled on 29 Jun 1863. After discharge on 16 Nov 1863 he went back to Madison County, and resided there until March 1865 at which time he and his family moved to the town of Carroll in Chautauqua Co.,N.Y. Although he moved to another city about 1878, namely Poland it appears that he spent his later years in Chautauqua County. His request for pension in 1883 shows his address as Frewsburg, Chautauqua Co., N.Y.

Aaron, Jr. was born 1843 and died 1895. Martha Helen was born I Dec 1840 and was still living in Schenectady in 1930.

I have copies of several letters she wrote from 1920 to 1930. She mentions in one letter that she had 9 brothers and sisters. She and Aaron had one son but he must have died as a young adult. She talks of 2 youngsters, Helen and Harold, who could be her grandchildren as they lived with her.

A CITY NAMED PANGBURN

North of Little Rock in the State of Arkansas, lies a town with the name PANGBURN. Mr. Ray Rains of the town of PANGBURN gave us the following information:

Doctor David PANGBURN founded the town in 185 7. He was originally from Schenectady, N. Y but he had been living in 0hio  prior to his move to Arkansas. Dr. Pangburn's wife was Mary Ann McDonald and the last of his children that were living in Pangburn was a daughter named Sarah who died in 1932. She was the last Pangburn in the town.

Armed with this information, I checked my records from the Schenectady area.

Marriages, Baptisms & Births of Guilderland, N.Y. (film # 0 179 10 # 4425 Salt Lake City LDS Library) revealed a Baptism of Austin PANGBURN born 19 Mar 1842 - Baptized 13 Dec 1842. The parents were David PANGBURN and Mary Ann McDonald.

Film # 4201 Baptisms Guilderland, N.Y. showed David born 7 Aug 1813, Baptized 12 Sep 1813. Parents John PENBURN and Elizabeth Brunk. (Note the spelling of Pangburn!)

Most of us may have trouble tracing our PANGBURN pedigrees, but the town of PANGBURN certainly knows where it came from!
