The PANGBURN LETTER is published at the cost of the Editor. The intent is non-profit and is to be used to disseminate information to others interested in the Pangburn lines. This publication will print data submitted by anyone who has Pangburn information. Perhaps by sharing with each other, we will be able to put together the Panghurn story.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

And we begin this issue with information on one of the ear PANGBORN families.

The following information is taken from the records of Viola Pangburn Roberts and is printed by permission of the Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois.

Although Viola did extensive research on the Pangborn/ Pangburn name, she did not cite her sources and made many assumptions. She was forced to do this since much of the material that is available to us now, was definitely - not available when she was doing her research. We present the following just as it was written by her.

NOAH PANGBORN OF CAZENOVIA, NEW YORK

The writer assumes that he married in Vermont and removed to Madison County, New York before 1820. He probably was the son of Stephen Pangborn whose name is found in the 1790, 1800, and 1810 census. In the 18 10 census, one Noah Panghorn's name is listed, with the wife, and 4 boys kinder 10. A search of records does not disclose another Noah of this section. Two Noah's are listed among the soldiers of the Revolutionary War. Father and son. The father was killed or died of natural causes. Where the son went the writer has not found. There is a statement that Noah Pangborn married his second cousin, Azubah Pangburn. Joseph Jr. married Azubah Pangborn (Brown). Joseph was an uncle of Noah, very likely.

Editor Note - Many of the dates and names listed above appear to be incorrect. They had been published as they appeared in Viola's records. The following additional information may help to correct some of her material.

Mrs. Kathryn Pangborn was kind enough to share some information on her husband's line. She writes,

In the Pangburn Letter (March 1988) we noted a James Pangborn whose grandfather was Noah Pangborn. James was born in Madison County, NY.

My father-in-law was born in Cazenovia, Madison Co., NY. His father was Abel Pangborn and his grandfather was Noah Pangborn. Noah's  wife's first name was Azubah. I don't know her maiden name.

Abel Pangborn was born on what is now Sullivan Street in Cazenovia, NY. His wife was Jane Farrell from North Hoosick NY.

I have no information on Noah and Azubah, only their names.

Abel Pangborn was born in 1837 and was killed in the Civil War in September, 1864. He was killed at the Battle of Opequan. He and his wife had two children, John Pangborn(my father-in-law) and Rose (or Rosalie). I don't think Rosa ever married - there were no children.

John Henry Pangborn, born January 6, 1862, married Ellen Elizabeth Britt. They had 2 sons, John Howard, born November 15, 1907, and William Harold, born January 17, 1909. They are both dead. Harold married Mary Winshenske in Cooperstown around 1956 or 1957.

PAGE 3

John Howard Pangborn was my husband. We were married in Syracuse, NY on June 21, 1927. Howard died August 9, 1939. We had six children, - John, Robert, Donald, William, Shirley Marie and Walter. Donald and Walter are both dead. Neither were married. My children are the only descendents of Abel and John Pangborn, as far as we know.

Kathryn also enclosed copies of the 114th Regiment from New York which shows,

Abel P. Pangborn - This soldier, than whom there was none more faithful, was hit at Opequan three times before he could be removed from the field: f first in the bowels, then in the leg, lastly in the head, killing him instantly.

And here is some additional information from Kathryn, -

On a tombstone in Cazenovia Cemetery, Abel Pangborn's birthdate is 1837.

After Abel Pangborn was killed, Jane took Rose and John to North Hoosick where she lived with her family. I assume she was buried in Cazenovia because there is a tombstone with her name on it. After his mother's death(35 years later), John came back to Cazenovia to live.

There was a William Pangborn and a Charles Pangborn living here (Cazenovia). My father-in-law (John Pangborn) didn't know them and never knew if they were related. They are both dead now. Charles had no children. William had four, two by his first wife, Adelaide and Anna, and two by his second wife, Charles and Rita. I don't know his first wife's name but his second wife was Margurite Callahan (now deceased).

Many thanks to Kathryn for sharing her family history.

And now, another branch of that same family, - Adelaide Coomber writes,

My grandfather was Nelson Freemont Pangborn. My greatgrandfather was John Pangborn who lived in Manlius, New York and married Margaret Santee. My father was William Pangborn.

Editor Note - Our reply to Kathryn Pangborn was simple She and Adelaide Coomber were related. Although her father in-law did not know the families were tied, - they were.

It appears that Abel (Kathryn's husband's grandfather) and John (Adelaide Coomber's great-grandfather) were both sons of Noah Pangborn. Both were Civil War Veterans.

As for the William and Charles Pangborn that were living in Cazenovia, they were the sons of Nelson Pangborn whose father was John N. Pangborn. John and Abel were brothers and were the sons of Noah. Nelson Pangborn had three sons, Charles, John and William. Adelaide Coomber is from his son William.

Now, like Viola, we also make assumptions. And we certainly do not get upset when proven wrong. Please let us know if the above assumptions are not correct !

Kathryn Pangborn forwarded our answer as shown above to her son, Robert. He, in turn, forwarded it to Rita Pangborn Osborn, and she writes,

I am the oldest issue of William I Pangborn (1887's) second wife. I was named Marion Rita, but they always called me Rita. I am a College Music- humanities Teacher.

John Pangborn (great- grandfather) was a fifer or piccolo player in the Civil War Band. I am basically a pianist but 1 did play flute and piccolo in high school.

My brother, Charles Walter Pangborn, is living in Syracuse, New York. He has two boys and a girl. I have five girls, three of whom live in California.

My sister, Adelaide, lives in the old homestead in Cazenovia, New York. My sister, Anna, is in the VA Hospital.

I am extremely interested in finding out more about Nelson Pangborn, my grandfather. There's nothing in the family bible, only info on my grandmother.

Rita's line is as follows:

William J. Pangborn, b. (c.) 1887 - m. (I st) Mary Mulholland Children:

Willie

Adelaide Anna , m. (2nd) (Marguerite Callahan)

Children:

Marion Rita (b) 1926

Charles Walter, b. 1928

Marion Rita Pangborn married Donald N. Osborn Children. Joan M. Claire C. Fay E. Sue A. Lynn L.

Charles Walter Pangborn married Carol Hayes

Children:

James

David

Okay researchers, - let's hear from you. We need more info on Nelson Pangborn and his family!

Rita Osborn also gives us this bit of information:

Margaret Santee, wife of John Pangborn, died when she and her infant daughter fell from an oxcart.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the above material !!!!

And here is a new little twist on the information you can get from various sources. Cathv Lobaugh says ...

I have enclosed two death certificates on one of my great-great uncles, Lucius W. PANGBORN, who lived and died in Oklahoma City. I ordered his Spanish-American War Records through the National Archives who referred me to Oklahoma's V.A. Office. The more complete death certificate came from the V.A. The other came from State of Oklahoma and cost me $5.00 ...

Now let's we what info she got --

From V.A. Office -

PANGBORN, Lucius W. - File #40314

(place of death) Oklahoma County, Oklahoma City

(sex) M (color) White

Married

Date of Birth - January 28, 1862

Age - 72 years, 5 months, 19 days

Occupation - None

Birthplace - Mich

Name of Father - Wm, Underhill PANGBORN

Birthplace of Father - N.Y.

Maiden name of Mother - Mary Goff

Birthplace of Mother - Ohio

Date of Death - July 17, 1934 - Uni Hospital

Former or usual Residence - 1031 N.E. 6th

Place of burial or removal - Fairlawn

Date of burial - 7/19/1934

Undertaker - Street and Draper Okla. City

From State Department of Health Records

PANGBORN, Lucius W, Registered #40314 Place of death - Oklahoma City, Univ Hospital 800 E. 13th Color - white Married Occupation - none Birthplace - Mich. Name of Father - Wm. Underhill Dated - July 18, 1934 Date of Death - 7/17/34 Place of burial or removal - Fairlawn Cemetery Undertaker - Street and Draper, 920 N. Robinson

Again, info on cause of death was included.

Quite a bit of information left off the record from the State. Looks like we have a lesson here, - go to every source and request their records... Never know what new info you might get !! Strange thing - both records had headings showing they were extracted from State Board of Health in Oklahoma City !

Editor note.- Living in Southern California has spoiled us. We have records and census material available at our back door at the National Archives in Laguna Niguel and also at the LDS Family History Library in Los Angeles. Many of our researchers have informed us that they do not have access to this material. So, as space permits, we will start printing some of the basic material from various locations.
