The PANGBURN LETTER

April 1987

The PANGBURN LETTER is published at the cost of the Editor.  The intent is non-profit and is to be used to disseminate information to others interested in the Pangburn lines.  This publication will print data submitted by anyone who has Pangburn information.  Perhaps by sharing with each other, we will be able to put together the Pangburn story.

FAMOUS PANGBORNS OF THE PAST&ldots;

Throughout the years there have been many Pangborns and Pangburns that have left their mark on the world, This month we feature two such people, --- Thomas Wesley PANGBORN and his brother, John C. PANGBORN.

Taken from a program for dedication ceremonies is the following:

“Thomas Wesley Pangborn, son of Anna Morris and Charles Thomas Pangborn was born in Brooklyn, New York.  In his early days his parents moved to LeRoy, Minnesota.  There, John C. Pangborn  was born.  The brothers, always close companions, were educated in the public schools of LeRoy and later completed special courses in New York.

Thomas PANGBORN got his first taste of industry when he became an apprentice in a copper rolling mill in New Jersey.  Less than a year later he was sales representative for the same concern.  After seven years, he resigned to establish his own business, the Pangborn Corporation.  John PANGBORN, working in sales for three years at the Western Electric Company, joined with his brother when the new corporation was one year old.

In 1908 the Pangborns moved their office and small plant to Jersey City, and in 1912 they came to Hagerstown, Maryland.  Ground for the first building on the present fifteen acre site was broken in 1915 – and building operations have continued there steadily ever since.

Thomas W. PANGBORN is now Chairman of the Board of the Corporation and John C. PANGBORN is Vice Chairman.  Both brothers have long been outstanding figures in industrial, religious and civic affairs. Both hold distinguished honorary degrees&ldots;”

Both men were prominent citizens. From a newspaper article we quote the following:

         Thomas Wesley PANGBORN   --  1880 – 1967

Thomas Wesley PANGBORN in his life span of 86 years excelled in many things – industry, philanthropy, church leadership and humanitarianism among them.

In two fields his career took him to the top: He was a leading American industrialist, and a leading Catholic layman.

As founder of the Pangborn Corporation, a key Hagerstown industry for over  half a century, Mr Pangborn made millions of dollars; as a humanitarian he gave vast sums of money to schools, churches and institutions in the service of humanity.

For his outstanding service, the title of Papal Count was conferred upon him by Pope Paul IV in January of 1965 – an extremely uncommon event since the temporal power of the Pope has virtually ceased.

As an industrialist he was concerned with the institutions of men.  He was honored with degrees in law,  -- letters and science by five universities or colleges.

He was recognized by museums, hospitals, business organizations, colleges, insurance firms that named him to their boards of directors.

In Hagerstown his name is stamped forever – The Pangborn Corporation, Pangborn Park, Pangborn Blvd, Pangborn School, Pangborn Hall, Pangborn Memorial Auditorium, Pangborn Council of the Knights of Columbus, Pangborn Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police.

There is a Pangborn Hall at the University of Notre Dame.  A Pangborn School of Architecture and Engineering at the Catholic University of America in Washington and a Panborn Hall at Mt. St. Mary’s College at Emmitsburg.

Thomas Wesley Pangborn died May 20, 1967.  His wife, Elsa Schumann Pangborn, preceded him in death.

And from an obituary we quote the following:

“John C. Pangborn died at his home ,December 24, 1958 , He was co-founder of Pangborn Corporation and until his death he served as vice chairman of the corporation board and of the Pangborn Foundation.

Mr John, as he was affectionately called by hundreds of friends and associates, was a Papal Knight of Malta, an honor bestowed on him by the late Pope Pius XIII .

He is survived by his wife, Olive (Rau) Pangborn; a son John C. Pangborn, Jr; three grandchildren; and a brother Thomas W. Pangborn.”

The above material was submitted by John F. Bauerle and our thanks go to him for helping his fellow researchers.

And now, some additional material on Thomas W. and John  C. Pangborn, -- taken from the manuscript of Viola Pangburn Roberts, courtesy of The Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois

Thomas W. PANGBORN, a machinery manufacturer, was born in Brooklyn, N. Y. May 29, 1880, he was the son of Charles T. Pangborn and his wife Anne, he received his education in the public schools of Leroy, Minn.

He married Elsie Schuman June 14, 1906&ldots;Census of 1880 Brooklyn, N.Y.

Charles T. PANGBORN

Anne PANGBORN,  wife

Frank PANGBORN, son

Arthur, PANGBORN,  son

James, PANGBORN, son

Henry PANGBURN, son

John C. PANGBORN wrote the author that in 1945 there were left in the family of Charles T. PANGBORN, Thomas, Arthur and John C. He stated that their was born in Keyport, N.J. and died when John C. was seven years in Leroy, Minn.  The records say he was an engineer.

John F. Bauerle needs YOUR  help to locate his ancestor.  He sent the following information:

1870 FEDERAL CENSUS – Township of Grand Rapids, County of LaSalle, Illinois

    PANGBORN,  Henry     32   Farmer    Hanover

           Mary              32           Wurtemburg

WHAT IS THE MAIDEN NAME OF MARY PANGBORN, WIFE OF HENRY PANGBORN???

John F. Bauerle is trying to do what we all try to do, when we can’t find our information – quit trying to come in the front door and go in the back door instead!

He writes, -- My interest in Mary Pangborn is this: My great-grandfather, Leonhard Bauerle, left Germany for America in 1854 with his brothers and sister.  The best I've learned, his wife came over in ca. 1858 , bringing their two sons, John (my grandfather) born in 1852 , and Charles, born ca. 1854, to Chicago.  Leonhard’s wife (John’s mother) died in about 2 years, and John was “farmed out” to an aunt and uncle who farmed near Ottowa, IL.  John worked for his uncle until he was 18, when he moved to Iowa and started farming for himself.  That is where my father was born.

I have been unable to learn who my great-grandmother was, with only two clues I've had to work on.

      # 1  My Aunt Rose (deceased) said she was named after her grandmother (Rosa or Rosine), and,

      # 2  Another Aunt said John was farmed out to an Uncle and Aunt, the sister of his mother.

If I can learn who Mary PANGBORN was, I can probably learn the name of my great-grandmother.

Okay researchers, who was MARY PANGBORN? And while were at it who was

HENRY PANGBORN???

Great-Great-Grandmother, -- where are your???   Donald Disbrow is trying to get information on his line.

His g-g-grandmother, Harriet PANGBORN was born 1800 (in or near Albany, NY??) and married Thomas WILLIS. They had a daughter Eveline (18

Jul 1820 – 17 Jan 1896) who married James Henry DEWEY (1813 – 1874).

The paternal uncle of James Henry DEWEY ( husband of Eveline WILLIS) married a Phebe PANGBORN (born about 1785 in Schenectady, NY).

Phebe, --Harriet,-- come out, come out, wherever you are!!

A new researcher, Kenneth R. Pangborn, has submitted information on his line.  He writes –

      Father:   Lloyd Henry PANGBORN

      Mother:   Evelyn Lorraine KIRKHAM

      Brother:  Lloyd Gerald PANGBORN

                (changed to Jerald Lloyd)

      Grandfather : Frank W. PANGBORN

      Grandmother:  Clara BLOETTNER

      G-Grandfather:  Joel Savage PANGBORN

      G-G-Grandfather:  Samuel PANGBORN

Joel Savage PANGBORN served in the Civil War.  Joel died in Oronko, Michigan.  The family lived in Champlain, NY (Clinton County) and before that in Vermont.  Joel was no candidate for Mensa.  Following the Civil War on one rather breezy day, Joel was out in the forest felling trees. A son-in-law came out with lunch and Joel stopped to have his luncheon repast beneath a tree sawed 3/4 ths of the way through.  A gust came up, and so much for Joel.

Frank Watson PANGBORN, my grandfather helped hound the Dairy Employees Union in Chicago in the headbusting days of unions.

Page 3

My father, Lloyd H. PANGBORN, was a partner in the C.J. Wieland & Sons dairy in Chicago.  He was a 32nd degree Mason.

The PANGBORN family seemed to settle in Berrien County, Michigan in some significant numbers,  I believe that Joel’s father, Samuel also settle there.  I could find absolutely nothing on Samuel or trace further back then him.  I could not find any records of his death in Michigan .

Okay researchers, -- dig in your files and lets fill in some blanks on Ken’s ancestoral chart.

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Donald Pangburn has submitted some additional information on his line. (See Pangburn Letter Vol. II, No. 2, pgs 6 thru 8).  He and Kay Reed share the same ancestoral background.

He writes, --

Last summer Norma and I did some “PANGBURN”  hunting thru Iowa and Illinois.  Had quite a trip --- checking cemeteries, libraries, court house records and etc.  Came up with some answers, no answers and additional questions in the pursuit of the “PANGBURN’ genealogy.

Chasing our particular line of PANGBURNS across the southern half of Iowa, we found the resting places of:

Jemima (PANGBURN) ANDERSON  -- Sidney, IA

George and Maye  PANGBURN  -- near Essex, IA

         Eli PANGBURN --  Siam, IA

Louisa (Ida PANGBURN) Boyer   --  Washington, IA

Where it was possible, we obtained what documentation that was available. (Not much!)  Our search for the grave of Tibatha (BOYCE ANDERSON)  PANGBURN, first wife of Eli, met with failure!  The information we had indicated that she would be in the cemetery at Hawleyville, IA. (Source John Knox PANGBURN’s bible and other related writings that are in the family.)  We did not find the grave in Hawleyville’s cemetery and no listing of her being there in the cemetery records on microfilm at the Clarinda Library.

On a hilltop a couple of miles East and slightly South of Hawleyville, just into “Taylor Co.”, there are three unmarked “PANGBURN” graves.

These graves are on Eli’s and Tibatha’s  farmstead of the mid 1800’S. Local folklore suggests that these are the graves of PANGBURN children or infants!  Our records indicate that this is probably true.  No “documentation”  exists, and such, I doubt will ever be found.  With information that we have, we can assume that the graves are of Tommy and two girls that died in infancy.  (The hilltop is in Taylor Co., Dallas Twn., Sect 20.  A tall transmitting tower stands approx. 80 to 100 ft. from the graves.)

I must pause in this writing of genealogical pursuits long enough to relate a story” passed down to me in regards to Eli and Tibatha, through decendants of his second wife, Rachel BARNES CUNNING PANGBURN.  The story came from a Mary Ruth SMITH, daughter of Eva (PANGBURN) Moore, who was a daughter by Eli’s second wife.

“Tibatha BOICE PANGBURN died suddenly in the exertion and excitement bought about when L. E. (Licorges) was bitten by a copperhead snake.  Eli had announced early in the day that it was a “good day” for copperheads to be about and warned them to be extra careful, but L. E. was careless handling grain.

I might add that Eli and Tibitha had a daughter Mima (Jemima) that died of approximately 18, when they lived at this site.  Neither Tibatha’s or Jemima’s grave sites have been located.  If we find one, we will probably find both.

From the Page and Taylor Co. area we went to the eastern part of Iowa, to Washington Co., and the town of Washington.  Her we located the grave of Elizabeth PANGBURN BOYER. (Aunt Ida).  We have very little genealogical information on the BOYERS.

We made mention of finding the graves of Geo. and Maye PANGBURN near Essex, IA.  There were infant children of John K. and Sarah PANGBURN who later settled in Waldo, KS.  I did not mention that we found an unexpected grave in the same “small” cemetery with the name of Anna

YOUNG PANGBURN on the headstone. --- Died 1884.  Nowhere in the records of my line of Pangburns do I have mention of Anna YOUNG PANGBURN!  Maybe some reader of The Pangburn Letter can shed some light on such. (This cemetery is not the municipal cemetery for the town of Essex.  It's located straight North of town several miles.

Leaving Iowa we went to Galesburg, IL, where our PANGBURNS had migrated in the mid 1840’s.  Spent a couple of days in the library and a day or so checking out the county (Knox).  We were looking for the grave site of Stephen PANGBURN (1778 – 1850).  We found the farmstead that he had settle on (N..W. part of the country). But had no luck otherwise.  With in a mile of the farmstead there is an abandoned cemetery (now under cultivation with a “bean” crop)  and I suspect that he may be buried there.  Again, maybe we can obtain some help from a reader.  In the library at Galesburg, it is listed as “Wright Cemetery”, located on the S. W. corner of Sect. 5 Knox Co.  The description of the cemetery is thus:

Located near former Wright Sch., South and West of the school, Southwest corner of Sect. 5.  There was a soldier’s grave and several other marked graves until 1940.  No stones remain standing in 1970 and non were able to be located. It is now on the Glen Carlson farm.

We were able to obtain some much needed PANGBURN documentation for our records while in the Galesburg area.  Also found 1860 listings at the Galesburg library of the following PANGBORNS:

    PANGBORNS,     Ellen

                   Adeline

                   J. B.

                   M. M.

                   Nellie

        Miram PANGBORN M. Joanna ENSIGN

Perhaps a PANGBURN reader might want to purse these records.

Editor’s Note:  Is there a researcher in Illinois that will take on this challenge???

Page 4

And some additional information on Eli and Tibatha (Tabitha) Pangborn:

Letter from Mrs. Ruth SMITH (Descendent of ELI PANGBURN/ 2nd wife):

    (Not dated)

From my copy of obituary for Clarinda paper by his daughter Ida.

Eli Pangborn died at his home in Siam, Iowa, Monday, Jan. 14, age 80 years and 4 months  Came to Iowa in 1856 settling at Hawleyville  Later moved into Taylor --  Married to Tabitha Boice in Brown County, Ohio, his home in 1834   She died at Hawleyville in 1864.  In 1865 he was again married to Rachel Cunning

Six children first wife – Mrs. Same Nye, Clarinda; Mrs. M. E. Aiton, Washington, D. C.; L. F. Pangburn, N.Y.;  J  K and L  A  Pangburn, Kansas and Miss Ida Pangburn   Two daughters born to second wife, Ada and Eva

The above is the important information from this clipping

So I disagree with your information as to place of death   I’m sure he died in his home at Siam.  I’ve often heard the details   He took Ada to her school boarding place in cold weather by horse cart, took cold and died soon from that illness   Also, he was born  near Ripley, Ohio (instead of Pittsburg Sep 1, 1814   I remember hearing of this birthplace and it is in mother’s handwriting in her records

Tabitha Boice Pangburn died suddenly in the exertion and excitement brought about when L. E. was bitten by a copperhead snake . Eli had announced early in the day that it was a “good day” for copperheads to be about and warned them to be extra careful but L. E. was careless handling grain

Eli had two sisters, Jamima Anderson and a Mrs. Reed (Abby P.) who I think lived at Marshalltown, Iowa once and had a son named Smile   Also, one half-brother, Sam   Also one brother John, “lost” on Mississippi River (I think with fever or disease of some kind they didn’t ever find him so thought that was reason.)

Mother had notes scribbled here and there about her family on both sides of family

One record says Eli had 10 children by first wife, Mima (Jemima) died at age 18 years, Tommy and two girls in infancy

Ada married Shelton Jackson of Hopkins, MO  She died in about 1901 or 1902 leaving one daughter who died in 1928 so that line died out

NOTE:  Mary Ruth was the daughter of Eva Pangburn Moore ---dau/ Eli Pangburn by 2nd wife, Rachael Barnes Cunning(ELI PANGBURN – buried in Cem / Siam, IA, Tombstone date = Jan 14, 1895)

And here is a query from researcher, John W Christian, --

“My problem with the PANGBURN line is this:   I have been able to “prove” the marriage of a Jacobus VAN ETTEN  to Annatje PANGBURN    And

I think his correct parents and children

However family “lore” has it that a Benjamin VAN ETTEN (or VAN NATTA) married a Hannah PANGBURN, Benjamin being born 21 Feb 1757

And here is another researcher, Virginia Watterson, who is also working the VAN ETTEN/VAN NATTA/VANETTA line

Jacobus VAN ETTEN  married Annatje PANGBURN  about 1761  Place unknown   Several of their Children are listed in Pearson’s “First

Settlers of Albany”

Do you have any way of identifying the above Annatje PANGBURN? Was she related to Richard PANGBURN of Niskatha who married Cathalyntje VAN ETTEN on 28 Sept 1769 (whose children were listed in Pangburn Letter, Vol e, No 1, pg 8,  Edith Pangburn’s line ???

Time to dig in your files and see if you have answers for VAN ETTEN    questions!!!!
