THE PANGBURN LETTER Volume 2, Letter 2. September 1984
Page 1.
The PANGBURN LETTER is published at the cost of the Editor. The intent is non-profit and is to be used to disseminate information to others interested in the Pangburn lines. This publication will print data submitted by anyone who has Pangburn information. Perhaps by sharing with each other, we will be able to put together the Pangburn story.
Thanks to Pat Darland and her search and inquiry on a name she found in Who's Who in religion, we have a new researcher, Cyrus R. Pangborn. Cyrus has furnished us with a tremendous amount of material, including his grandmother's journal, which he has allowed us to share with you. The following was written by Mrs Melvin (Vivia Nancy Fogo) Pangborn.
THE PANGBORN FAMILY
The Pangborns were early English settlers in this country. Several ancestors were soldiers in the Revolution. One of them being confined by the British in some of the Wallabout Prison ships.
The first knowledge we have of any particular member of the family is Peter Pangborn and his wife Grace of Newton, Long Island, New York, 1668. Their children consisted of six sons, Peter Jr., Richard, Stephen (our line), Edmond, Ephriam and William.
Stephen Pangborn married Joanna Tuttle of Woodbridge, N. J. Their children consisted of seven sons, Joseph, Gideon, Timothy (our line), Samuel, Stephen, John and Nathaniel. The first knowledge we have of any particular member of this family is of Timothy Pangborn. His wife's maiden name was Partridge. They lived on the banks of the Au Sable River, near the town of Essex, Essex Co., New York, not far from Lake Champlain. Their family consisted of one daughter, Elizabeth, and five sons, Libeas, Joseph, John (our line), Nathaniel and Thaddeus. A story told of one of the brothers- Libeas, shows that although he was too venturesome, he was also brave. He ventured out upon Lake Champlain, after one nights freezing, intending to skate near the shore, when suddenly the ice began to sink beneath him. He could not turn back, for to do so, he would be obliged to check his speed, and would have gone through the ice, so his only chance and that a very poor one, was to go ahead. He started across the lake for Burlington, Vermont, a distance of four miles expecting every moment to be his last. He got across safely and a large crowd had gathered on the Burlington side to watch him, and no doubt he received much praise for this presence of mind and censure for reckless daring.
John Pangborn also had a narrow escape on the lake. He crossed the ice with a team one evening and the next morning there was not a speck of ice to be seen. It had broken up and blown out in the night. We know very little of the character of the family, but judging by the names they gave their sons they must have been quite Puritanical. All the children married, the daughter Elizabeth married a Hessian by the name of Brown. John Pangburn married Miranda Miller who liver near Burlington, Vermont, just across the lake from the Pangborns. She, as well as her husband, had an uncle who was kept prisoner by the British during a part of the Revolutionary War. Of the Millers we know very little, but her mother's name was Rebecca Belden. The Beldens formerly lived at Wethersfield, Conn., not far from the coast and they raised onions for the sailors. Rebecca married Mr. Miller and three children were born to them. Abner Belden Miller, Miranda and Royal Miller.Abner Belden Miller married Triphenia Hendee. After the marriage of John Pangborn and Miranda Miller, April 15, 1805, they lived on their forty acre farm between two mountains near Keen, Essex Co., N. Y. This land was opened up for settlement about 1780 or 1790. They never saw the sun til ten in the morning nor after four in the afternoon. They lived in the Adirondack mountains and later information states they came from Addison, Vermont. In Essex Co., New York, three of their five children were born. These were Triphenia, Thomas Miller Pangborn, and Ransom Belden Pangborn. Although they lived amidst beautiful scenery, they wished to move west to the new country of Ohio. So in 1816 they started with their family and possessions in a wagon drawn by oxen. They also had one horse. Leaving the old home was not then as it is now: no railroads and letter writing was an expensive luxury, so they bid goodbye forever to some of their family, although some of them followed them to their new home a few years later. Their journey through New York and Pennsylvania was a tedious one. When they arrived at Wheeling, West Virginia, they procured a raft and floated down the Ohio River to Portsmouth, Ohio, where they remained for a time. They soon journeyed on to Franklin Co., Ohio, where the city of Columbus now is located, coming from Portsmouth up the Scioto River. Here John Pangborn cleared two farms and here two more children were born. They were Maria and Cyrus Skeels Pangborn. They lived about three miles from Worthington and about seven miles from Columbus, Ohio.
In a few years a number of their relatives and friends had followed them to Ohio, among them Libeas, Joseph and Thaddeus Pangborn with their aged father and mother. Nathaniel is said to have remained in New York. Royal Miller with his mother, who will be remembered as Rebecca Belden Miller, came to this-

- new land. The three old people were cared for most of the time by John Pangborn and his wife. Timothy Pangborn and wife lived in a small house near their son and Rebecca Miller lived with John and Miranda. A small oval stand on which she ate her meals, a mirror over three hundred years old and a leather covered trunk, age not known, are still in the possession of some of the descendants.Libeas Pangborn had thirteen sons, Joseph two and Thaddeus one. Thaddeus and family moved to Indiana, and when crossing the Black Swamp - now the richest land to be found anywhere - they were attacked by wolves and were obliged to throw all their provisions to them. Royal Miller had a son who was one of the best violinists of Columbus. John Pangborn's wife - Miranda - was one of the best butter makers of that time. She supplied several families of Columbus with butter for a number of years. She was a very active woman and could spring to a horse's back from the ground with ease.
Triphenia Pangborn died when about nineteen years of age. She was the promised wife of Delias Skeels who with his parents had also come from Essex County, New York and were old acquaintances at that place.Thomas Pangborn went to the southern states and was for two or three years overseer for a slave owner. After his return home he was married to 1832 to Jane Harper, a remarkably good woman. In May 1836 Thomas Pangborn with some of his neighbors, came to Illinois to get homes. They stopped at Spring Creek and entered farms. Thomas taking one of 220 acres for himself and one of 160 acres for his brother Ransom. They were among the earliest setters in what is now Onarga, Iroquois Co., Illinois. In 1837 Thomas brought his family to their home. The first winter ten persons wintered in a small log house. These were Ransom Pangborn and Margaret Harper - who afterward became his wife - being amount the number. Margaret was a sister of Jane Pangborn and she was united in marriage with Ransom B. Pangborn in 1838. For the first fifteen years in this new country, the settlers found abundance of game in the timber and on the prairies. Deer had to be herded from the cornfields and they were often found feeding among the cattle. Venison was always on the table. Wild fowl, ducks, geese, brants and prairie chickens were too plentiful to be profitable. Wild hogs for some years furnished pork and a few years a stray flock of turkeys could be found. At the same time the land was almost overrun with snakes. Corn bread was the staple in that line. In most of the families four bread was furnished on Sundays. This made Sunday a welcome day to the little folks. Some might think such a life would be unendurable but in the language of an old settler, "You could stand if you had to". Four daughters grew to womanhood in the home of Thomas and Jane Pangborn. They were Triphenia, Emily, Mary and Miranda.Ransom and Margaret had two sons and four daughters, Lorenzo Dow, Jane, Olive, Maria and Louise (twins) and Burt.
Thomas or Judge Pangborn was for four years associate judge of Iroquois Co, Ill., and for many years a member of the M. E. Church, and a class leader for thirty six years. The good name he enjoyed was due to his exemplary life and perfect Christian character.Ransom Pangborn was a good a man and was greatly beloved although not as prominent in public life.Cyrus S. Pangborn was the youngest child of John and Miranda Pangborn. He was born Feb 5th, 1822 near Columbus, Ohio or Worthington, Ohio, which is now included in the city of Columbus, about six years after his parents located there. He well remembers seeing the land covered with stumps upon which the city of Columbus now stands and he at one time owned a flintlock musket that his father found beside a human skeleton near a log, when he was clearing his farm. The musket was presented to the Grand Prairie Seminary of Onarga, Ill., By Cyrus S. Pangborn, who with his brothers did much toward the founding of that institution and from him I have learned nearly all I have written concerning the Pangborn family. Cyrus Pangborn made this statement that the name was originally spelled Pangbourne. Cyrus Pangborn was converted when fourteen years of age and has been a member of the M. E. Church since that time. For a number of years he was chorister in his church and was a singing school teacher, teaching by note.Maria A. Pangborn was born in Ohio in 1819 and was married to Truman Bishop Hall in 1841. They had a large family and most of them grew to manhood and womanhood. The names of those I have been able to learn are: John, Thomas, Truman, Jane, Martha and Emma (Jones).
Thomas was a soldier and was held a prisoner in Andersonville prison during part of the Civil War.Cyrus S. Pangborn was married to Mary Jane Gilmore May 22, 1845. The same summer they with his father and mother and Truman B. Hall and Maria Hall started for Iroquois Co., Ill., making the journey with teams and wagons. Cyrus Pangborn's young wife died before they reached their destination and his father John Pangborn died about a month after their arrival in Illinois.Cyrus and his mother settled in Onarga township near where Thomas and Ransom had located eight years before. Chicago was their trading point at that time and was comparatively a small town. In July 1849, Cyrus Pangborn was married to Mary Taylor. She died in May 1850 leaving a son three days old who was named John Alonzo and who lived but a few months. Cyrus Pangborn's third marriage occurred August 19, 1852 with Rosanna Riner. Seven children were born to them. Frank E., Josephine H., E. Viola, Jesse, Melvin, Mary May and Quincy June.Cyrus Pangborn's mother lived with them til sometime after his third marriage, when she went to live with her daughter Maria Hall. She made her home with them until her death in Jan 1873. Her daughter died a month or two before her in the latter part of the year 1872. Jesse Pangborn, son of Cyrus and Rossana Pangborn died March 11, 1872.
In 1873 Cyrus Pangborn came to Kansas with the intention of buying a farm. After traveling through several counties of the state he returned to Illinois without buying land and remained at Onarga, Illinois, till 1882, when he sold his farm, and the family - with the exception of Frank Pangborn - who remained in Illinois - came to Jewell Co., Kansas, where a farm was purchased on which they located two miles west and one and one half miles south of Burr Oak, Kansas, on White Rock Creek.Jewell Co. was comparatively a new country, but as there was no timber to be cleared and the railroads brought comforts and conveniences that people in Ohio and Illinois had to do without yet, the early settlers in Jewell Co., Kansas endured many hardships caused principally by the hot winds and dry seasons when crops were injured.Frank E. Pangborn, the oldest son of Cyrus and Rosanna Pangborn, was married to Alice Winter in 1876 in Illinois and they located in Bureau Co., and lived on a farm until 1912 when they moved to Tillamook, Oregon.Four children were born to them in Illinois, Myrtle Viola, Jesse Cyrus, Cora May and Charles Alvin who died when he was four years of age.Josephine Hortense Pangborn was married to William Heaston in 0878 in Illinois. They had one child, Mary Enola Heaston who was born in 1889.She married Harry Thomas in Topeka, Kansas. They had no children. They and the Heastons moved to Tillamook, Ore., in 1908. Harry Thomas was a Cheesemaker. They had no children. May Pangborn was married to Fred Norton in 1885. Their children consisted of two boys and two girls. Nina May, Leo Elmore, Cyrus E. and Bernice Viola.

Melvin Pangborn was united in marriage to Vivia Nancy Fogo. They had three daughters, Mabel Edna, Violet Adelaide and Eula Rosanna.Quincy June was married to Bessie Blake, Feb 3, 1904. They had three children - Aline Hortense, Arden Lester and Marjorie. All the children of Cyrus & Rosanna Pangborn, except Melvin moved to Tillamook, Oregon, May Norton & family going in 1890 and the others later. Melvin was sixteen years old when he came to Kansas. He united with the M. E. Church at Burr Oak, Kansas, when seventeen years of age and was married at age 22 years to Vivia Fogo, who was converted and became a member of the same church at the age of eighteen. When Melvin Pangborn was married, his parents moved to Burr Oak, Kansas, where they lived until Nov. 1893 when Rossana Pangborn died.Cyrus Pangborn then came back to the farm and made his home with Melvin and family for 12 years.Uncle Thomas and Aunt Jane Pangborn died at Onarga, Ill.Uncle Ransom lived the last years of his life at Lynden, Washington, near his children. It is characteristic of the Pangborn men their purity of life, freedom from bad habits, bad language, intoxicating drinks and tobacco, and their readiness to help in any good work.John Pangborn was born March 14, 1775Miranda Miller was born Sept. 8, 1783Were married April 15, 1805

And now for a little more history on the family, were are going to include some excerpts from a letter written by Cyrus Pangborn to Pat Darland.
"Dear Cousin Patricia:"
The farm near Burr Oak, Kansas was purchased by Cyrus from the original homesteader and passed by inheritance to my grandfather, Melvin, and thence to my father Halsey. At his death in 1967, my sister and I became trustees for our mother and found it better to sell the farm and invest the proceeds for her then to serve as absentee landlords.
When I was age 7, and again at age 9, we made trips to Tillamook, Oregon here I met my great uncles and aunts. We usually stayed with Aunt Joe whom you list as Josephine. The one you list as Ticetta V. must be Aunt Vi. I do not remember a Mary. The one of the Oregon group who did not stay in Tillamook was Quincy, whom we visited in Portland. As the youngest of my father's uncles, he was so little older then my father that the two of them felt like brothers.
Quincy was in possession of Cyrus 's family Bible and for reasons obscure to wanted it to descend to me. It is the one of two things - the other being a handmade what - not-that have come down from my namesake to me.
My father's wish was that I inherit and till the Kansas farm. Not until he learned that Yale and Columbia were more than obscure institutions somewhere East of the Mississippi did he come about and show unconcealed pride in my career. I loved him for that.
As far as I know, I am the only one of my "Tree" who has had a career in the field of religion. We were Methodist in Kansas, but I became a Congregationalist in 1942 and was ordained as one. My professional history has been almost wholly that of the nonsectarian teacher in state universities. I had come to Rutgers when a copy of work done on family history by my grandmother was given to me. Upon noticing that Woodbridge, N. J. (just ten miles from New Brunswick) was listed as residence for an early ancestor, my first thought was, That umbilical cord must have been a long, durable, and elastic one!
I have no data about my lineage before the years spanned by the enclosed genealogy. It is family lore, however, that origins go back to the town of present-day Pangbourne, on the Thames River between Reading and Windsor, and that the town was named for the family that originally lived by the bank of the river in that place. Further, the name is alleged to have evolved from a much earlier Chaucerian form, Paegingaburnac which, divided into syllables, Paeg-inga-burna, translates as "family -of (or by) the brook." I have been there and it is a charming place, but I can't couch of the accuracy of the lore. The postmaster, however, said - Alas! - there were no living members of our tribe there.
To Reverand Cyrus Pangborn - our thanks for sharing.

To Be Continued (I Hope)!
We understand that there was a Pangburn reunion recently. Kay and her husband Jim met with Don and Norma to exchange handshakes and information. Turns out Jim and Don are "half" fourth cousins. No too bad - getting these two people together wasn't too difficult - even if one does live in Kansa and the other in Colorado Now that you two know each other, don't forget to send us copies of any information you exchange!

These records were collected by William A. BRINKMAN, of Altamont, Albany Co., (Justice of the Peace) of Guilderland, 1895 to date. The collection was made by personal visits to the various burial places and interviewing old residents, in his interest to preserve the history of the vicinity. The work has extended over a period of years, and some of the burial places mentioned have been entirely obliterated and each year adds to the list of those destroyed. This material has been arranged and typewritten by Charlotte TAYLOR LOCKHURST, D..A. R. Schenectady, November 1914

How many times have you seen a PANGBURN record - and just because it didn't belong to your line - you didn't take the time to copy and document it? That record could be the ties for another researcher! Many of you have been asking if we will be the repository for all
PANGBURN material - documents, pictures, and what have you. YES! You send it - we will publish it ( as time and space permits) and above all - we will pass on copies to those who are researching that line. It is not our intention to charge for this service nor in any way to make a profit. The material is not for sale and is not to be used by anyone for that purpose. PANGBURN is family - and the PANGBURN LETTER is a labor of love for that family. So check your files - if they are like ours, they are loaded with material. Good solid documents that will help others with their research.
Whenever you see the name PANGBURN - no matter how it is spelled - please copy the document and send it to us. Remember, the documents the document you are looking for may be found by someone else. You wouldn't want them to just pass it by!What are we looking for? Census (State & federal), Tax Lists, Vital Records, Land Records, Voters Records, Selectmen Records, City Directories, Old Telephone Directories, Town Hall Meeting Record, Dog Licenses (believe it or not, they exist), Court Records, Guardianship Records, Published Genealogies (be sure to include full name and date of the book - no infringement on copyrights!), County Histories, Town Histories, Church Records or Histories, newspaper clippings (obits, marriage, etc), diaries, Bible records, old records and postcards, Mass cards, Lodge records, and heaven only knows what else?
Now we are going to give each of you and assignment. Would you please check you local telephone book and send us a list of all
PANGBURN/PANGBORN/PANGBOURNE ( or however they spell it!) names and addresses. There could be another researcher lurking in the telephone books that we don't know about. You might do this too when you go on vacation. It can't hurt - it can only help all of us.
We are pleased to announce that we are ready to break the 100 mark on researchers of the PANGBURN line with whom we correspond. Do you have the name of another researcher to add to our list? Or - do you know of another Society or Library that would like to receive a copy.
We sent to approximately 400 right now.
