Diane Wolfson is also working on the Morris Ross line and like everyone else, she wants to get more facts to put on her ancestral chart.  Her line follows on the next page

Page 3

Morris Ross  - b. c. 1783 – m. 22 July 1807 in Westfield, Essex (now Union Co.), N. J. to Mary Pangburn – b. c. 1788.  Their daughter, Abigail married Stephen Townsend about 1829 in Yates Co., N.Y.  In approximately 1838, Stephen and Abigail (Ross) Townsend, Morris and Mary (Pangburn) Ross, William Pangburn Ross, Brittain Ross and Freeman Ross moved to Geneva, Walworth Co., Wisconsin where they remained until 1855 when Freeman and Mary L. (Powell) Ross moved with Morris and Mary (Pangburn) Ross to Scott, Columbia Co., Wisc.  Morris Ross died in Columbia County in 1867 and Mary (Pangburn) Ross died sometime between 1860 and 1870.  Morris Ross and Mary Pangburn had 5 sons and 3 daughters of which I know the following:

      Abigail Ross – b. 1810 in N. J.

      William Pangborne Ross – b. April 1812 in  N. J.

      Brittain Ross – b. 1814 in N. J.

      Freeman Ross m. 27 Aug 1828 Yates Co., N. Y.

Diane wants to know the name of Mary Pangburn’s parents.  Okay so if we tell her William Pangburn – then we are back to the same old question – who were William’s parents???

And last – but not least – material from the manuscript of Viola Pangburn Roberts, printed by permission of the Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois.

                             MIDDLEBURGH, L. I.

The name, Middleburg, was given to the new settlement after the capital of the Province of Zealand, remembered with gratitude as the asylum of many of the English Puritans.

March 6, 1667, Gov. Nicholls signed the deed to all the tract bounded, east by Flushing Creek, north by the Sound, south by Jamaica line which runs on the south side of the hills and west by Mespat Creek or Kills, etc. - that the place of their present habitation shall continue and retain the name of New Towne.

There were in New Town colonist made up of respectable individuals from Hempstead, L. I. who had previously resided in Stamford.

 Annuals of Newton, Riker, p. 27; Colonial Hempstead, Bernie Schultz, p. 3;

From whence did Peter Pangborne?  Did he migrate from Charlestown, Mass., down to Westersfield, to Stamford, to Newtown, L. I., to New York City to live among the Dutch, or did he come with the great number of English who left their native land soon after the British occupation of New Amsterdam?

Susanna Pangborne may have been a daughter of Peter Pangborne.  She married George Jewell.

George Jewell was a first settle of Piscataway, N. J.  He came from Newtown, L. I. After 1666 when he was an overseer and in 1680 settled in Elizabethtown, where he was prominent.  He died Aug 1734.  April 17, 1688 George Jewell married Susanna Pangborne of New York.

In   1696 about the time Peter Pangborne died Richard Pangburn signed the “Oath Rolls” in New York City. In 1698 a land record of Richard Pangburn in Rahway, N. J.  It appears that the two Richards are identical.  (History of Woodbridge by Salter and History of Woodbridge and Piscataway by Monet.)

For many years Pangburns lived in Essex Co., Union Co., Middlesex Co., and Somerset Co., N. J. Woodbridge seems to have been the N. J. cradle.  The earliest date concerning a land title was that of Richard Pangburn, 1698.

Aug 8, 1698, Jefry Jones to Richard Pangburn, for house and barn,  half of the ground (orchard) between lessor and Dennis, half of the ground excepting two acres, occupied by Edward Gand, two thirds of the great pasture, 13 acres of meadow near John Marsh’s Creek.  East Jersey Deeds, Liber G, p 26.

A Summary of some of the Pangborn Neighborhoods

It is believed that New Orange, N.Y., 1673 was the cradle of the Pangborns and Pangburns and Pangmans.  We find our ancestor herein 1673; in Newtown, L. I. In 1674 and 1675: in New York  City now and then to 1699.  He was Pieter Pangbourne.

In 1689 he bought a lot on Pine Street, and it seems that about 1699 it was sold.  There are some land records regarding this property.

About 1696 Richard Pangburn gisns “ The Oath Rolls” and Ephraim has trouble over a coat.  Some folk maintain that these three Pangburns were brothers but the writer of these notes claims they were not.   No papers can be found to prove the relationship but after a deep study of the matter Pieter seems to have been the father of Richard.  Who Ephraim was we cannot say.  He may have been the father of Pieter.  The Pangburns were great folk to name their children after the parents and favorite brothers and sisters.  Ephraim the name, does not appear in any of the branches through the generations to  follow.  The name, Richard was repeated many times in one branch of the family.

The Pangburn family removed to the vicinity of Woodbridge, N. J. about 1700, immediately after the lot was sold in 1699.  In the records of New Jersey of which there are few, we find the names of Richard, Anne, Stephen, William, Samuel, Edmund, Peter, John, Benjamin, Sussana, Lydia, Joanna, Nathaniel and another Stephen.

Prior to the Revolutionary War there were may Pangborns and Pangburns scattered throughout Middlesex, Essex, Ocean and Somerset Counties of New Jersey.  It is regrettable that so many of the records were destroyed in the wars.

The census records destroyed – 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820.  For some of the counties there is an 1830 census and for some only an 1860 census.

Richard Pangburn was much in the life of Woodbridge.  Stephen married Joanna Tuttle and removed from New Haven to Woodbridge.  Soon after 1710 he removed to North Haven, Ct. Peter is mentioned once, William a few times;  Another Stephen many times; Edmund died intestate and left Lydia, his wife and John. There may have been other children. Who William, Samuel and Anne were we do not know.  William, the earliest, may have been Richard’s brother.

It appears that William was the father of the second Stephen; one thing is known that Stephen named a son William, a soldier in the Revolutionary War.  Richard may had had a son William who married Mary Coddington, daughter of Benjamin Coddington.

A large family of Pangburns removed from Woodbridge to Albany Co., N. Y. about 1760.  One William Pangburn died 1759 leaving an estate but now will.  In the life of Woodbridge were John and Benjamin. Edmund of Albany Co., N. Y. named his oldest son, William; Richard named his oldest son, John; William named his oldest son, William John named his oldest son Edmund.  It seems that these folk were descendents of Edmund who died in 1710.  His wife was Lydia which name we find repeated in that family.

One Richard Pangburn and his wife Ruth were married in Scotch Plains, N. J. 1761.  Scotch Plains is a tiny village a few miles from Woodbridge.  Later they removed to Bridgewater, Somerset Co., N. J. and Peter was born. After that they came back to Scotch Plains and lived there during the Rev. War.  One Jeremiah lived in Westfield, a town near Scotch Plains.

It appears Richard Pangburn removed to Bridgewater, N. J. where  Peter was born in 1763.  Later he came back to Scotch Plains. (War records).

Later we find Alexander, David L. Dunham, Ira Randolph, Isaac, Peter, Samuel, Joel, Martha, Jennie, Jeremiah, Rebecca, Stephen, William, William H., Joseph, Nathaniel, and James who removed to Pike Col., Ill. And had twenty one children by two wives. Of course there  were many more of whom we have no record. These Pangburn had large families.

Stephen Pangborn who removed to North Haven, Ct. had Joseph who was the ancestor of the Pangborns around Vergennes, VT. And those in Essex Co., N. Y. He also had Noah, Hannah and Timothy whose son Richard fought  for the REBELS but his sons, Noah and Stephen were Loyalists.  They went  to Canada.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Joseph had a large family among whom were Noah, Samuel, John, Stephen, James, and probably Moses. Joseph Jr. was a son too.

Adonijah was a nephew of Joseph, Jr.: remained in Connecticut until he passed away.  James was a war veteran of early wars; lived in Waterbury and in Oxford, Ct.

One John Pangburn removed to the southern part of Onandaga Co., N.Y. after Rev. War, and had a very large family. (See Census of 1820 for Hector, N. Y.) One Richard Pangburn lived there too, that is in Newfield nearby.

From Woodbridge, N. J. abt. 1760, came a large family of Pangburns to Albany Co., N. Y. and married into Dutch families, William, Richard,

Edmund and John with a large group of girls.  Many descendents of these people can be found about Albany today.

War records, land records, church records have been studied and conclusions have been made which are in the main correct.

William and John lived in the vicinity of Bethlehem, N. Y. for years while Richard and Edmund, seemingly removed to Schenectady.  Richard, again moved this time to Schoharie Co., and then to Tioga Co.  When an old man he went back to Schenectady and at an age over Ninety he passed on. The wars scattered the Pangburns. As new lands opened in the west they migrated. Records have been found which located their new homes in many counties in New York, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, also find some in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Colorado, California, Washington.  In 1941 we find them all over the Union. It is believed the Pangburns, Pangborns and Pangmans are related more or less.

Sue adds that these are not her Pangburns – she found her Banjamin and Jane Ann (Dockstader) Pangburn living in Orleans Co., Yates Twp., N. Y. in 1880.  They probably came to Michigan in 1885.She still does not know the parents of Benjamin Pangburn b. 1840 in Schenectady, N. Y., but believes they might be Richard and Martha  Pangburn who were living in Montgomery Co., Root Twp., N.Y. in 1850..

Who has the answer for her – anyone want to volunteer???

Martha Ross is looking for information on the ancestors of William Pangburn.  Based on information above from the manuscript of Viola Pangburn Roberts, and material that was published previously in The

Pangburn Letter Vol. I No 1, pages 4 & 7, and Vol. II, No 2, page 5 – it appears that William Pangburn was the son of Stephen Pangburn, Jr. and his first wife Rebecka Emlay (Stephen’s second wife was Anne Montgomerie). Stephen Pangburn, Jr. was the son of Stephen Pangburn, SR. and Joanna Tuttle. Stephen Pangburn, Sr. was the son of Peter Pangburn and Grace Ffidoe.

James Demarest and Mary Pangborne lived in Plainfield, N. J. He was considered wealthy, owning much land in what is now the city of Plainfield.  However, he lost the land around the time of the Civil War, and died soon after – ca. 1868. After his death, Mary Meeker Pangborne Demarest married ( 3 July 1869) Edward (“One-Eyed”) Morse, definitely a relative (but what relation???) of Samuel F. B. Morse who invented the Morse Code, etc. Edward has lost his eye in the Civil War. Mary and Edward Morse moved to Blauvelt, N. Y.  Patricia states she has information on the offspring of these people, if anyone is interested.

Our next group of people are working the Tuttle/Pangburn connection, which is also part of the New Jersey line.

     Elizabeth Miller writes that Ephraim Tuttle married his second cousin, Hannah Pangborn.  She includes this little chart in her letter;

William  Tuttle 1

 _________________________________________________________

Joseph   Tuttle  2

     Simon  Tuttle   2

Joanna  (Tuttle)  Pangburn  3

        Timothy  Tuttle   3

Hannah  Pangborn   4

      Ephraim  Tuttle   4

She states that Stephen Pangborn married Joanna Tuttle  3  (William  1,  Joseph  2) of Hew Haven before June of 1709 and moved to Woodbridge, N. J.  Joanna was b. 30 Dec 1675.  Their daughter Hannah was born in 1714 and married Ephraim Tuttle of New Haven 16 Jan 1756, so the ties with the New Haven community remained strong.  Stephen Pangborn appears in “First Settlers of Woodbridge, N. J.” by Monette and was apparently a “first settler”.

Elizabeth has also included some little tidbits of information to help our researchers.

The following material is from the manuscript of Viola Pangburn Roberts, printed by permission of the Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois.

                                  Timothy Pangborn

Timothy Pangborn, hotel-keeper, Michigan Center, Mich. was born in Champlain, Clinton Co., N. Y.  He was the son of Elisha and Betsey White Pangborn, natives of Connecticut.  The father died Jan. 16, 1879, in his 99th year; the mother in 1876 in her 86th year. Both died in Sand Lake, Mich.  Timothy was educated N.Y. State.  He followed lumbering with his father; then went to Ohio where he engaged in milling – then came to Jackson Co, Mich., dealt in stoves and hot air furnaces; then he went into the restaurant business and oil business, the latter in Canada.  In 1869 he opened the Mineral Springs and at a depth of 237 feet struck mineral water which has proved so valuable.

In 1841 he was married to Harriet Beal, born in N. Y., 1822.

Their children were Hiram and Edward, both deceased by 1881.  Aug 4, 1880 his wife died in Leoni, Mich.

His ancestral line is through Samuel, Joseph, Sr., Stephen and

Peter of Newtown, L. I.  Conjecture only.

Richard Riley has submitted his Pangburn line and you will note that it ties with Mrs. W. D. Agerton’s line (The Panborn Letter Vol II, No. 1) and also that of Cyrus Pangborn (The Pangborn Letter Vol  II, No 2.)

Joseph Pangborn – b. 1774 N. Y., d. 7 Oct 1843 Big Island Twp, Marion,

Richard has included a little tidbit of information from his area of research: “In the Marion, Ohio cemetery is a small chapel built a few years after the Civil War.  On the walls of granite are the names of Marion County men who served in the Union Army and their units.  In a place of honor near the west door is a short list of men who served in wars prior to the Civil War.  At the top of that list is Major Joseph Pangborn.  He came with his family to Ohio shortly after 1820 and took up 80 acres in big Island Township.  His eldest son, Joseph Dexter, was a blacksmith and wagon maker and his son Dennis was the farmer.  Dennis cleared the trees from most of the farm so it could be planted.  One of Major Pangborn’s son –in-laws, John Royal Miller, was a shoemaker and farmer.”

Thanks for sharing, Richard!!

Judith informs us that her connection to the Pangburn line comes through her Hunter line. Mary Hunter's brother was Archibald Hunter from whence she is descended. She is looking for any ties to the Thadeus Pangburn/Mary Hunter line.

From Viola Pangburn Roberts' records, published by permission of the Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois:

Thaddeus Pangburn, b. 1787, Connecticut Res.: 1850, Carrol Co., Ind.

War Service: War of 1812, drafted, Essex Co., N.Y., 13 Sept 1813; served as sergeant in company, com. by Capt. Daniel Blish, N.Y.; drafted co. I, com. by Maj. Roberts; disch. Plattsburg, N.Y., 20 Dec 1813.

Salina Pangburn       b. Ind. age 18

(It appears that Thaddeus Pangburn removed to Vermont for in a certain record his place of birth is given as Vermont. Instead of Ribard being the son of Samuel Pangborn of Westport, N.Y., as is stated in E.C. Starr's HISTORY OF CORNWALL, CT. - it is believed Thaddeus is.)

Okay, researchers, Viola's comment just muddied the waters. If you will refer to Pangburn Letter, Vol. 11, No. 2, page 1 - Thaddeus Pangburn is listed as son of Timothy, who was son of Stephen, who was son of immigrant Peter. This information came from a direct ancestor - while Viola was on the outside looking in!

And here is some additional information submitted by Judith Fields to help other researchers. She obtained this information from the Carroll County Historical Museum in Delphi, Indiana.

From the Wills of Carroll County, Indiana:

Pangburn, Thadeus 4-16-1858. Probated 8-10-1863 shows children Elizabeth, William, Nancy, Salina and wife Mary. Witnesses were Edward Walker, John H. Burr and James H. Stewart. Executor was son, William.

PANGBURN, JOHN

Residence, Leavenworth

Enlisted February 23, 1865

Date of Muster February 23, 1865

Remarks - Mustered out with regiment September 29, 1865

Recruits of Co. G Cavalry - Seventh Kansas Cavalry (Regiment Volunteers - became a Veterans' Organization

I didn't find any other record, but he is listed in The Anderson County History as also being in the 16th Kansas Cavalry, Company L. I am guessing that he was in the 16th Kansas Cavalry first and then re-enlisted in the 7th. The Adjutant General's book has a short history of each company and it looked like the 16th disbanded in 1863.

Barham, Benjamin, b. 1861, parents Samuel and Marion b. in Anderson County, Kansas, Monroe Township, d. 16(?) May 1869,7y 8m 21d  buried in the cemetery at Greeley, Kansas very near where Alonzo Pangburn is buried. They were halfbrothers.

Barhan, Martha Olivia, b. in Mercer Co., Ill in 1858. Dau of Samuel and Marion Pangburn Barhan. She came to Kansas with the family, but so far (1983) have not found any more about her.

Samuel Barhan and his first wife, Susan Rutledge Barhan, had a family of 10 children in Richland and Morrow Counties, Ohio. Evidently Susan died soon after Sarah J. was born The husband and children are next found in Mercer County, 111. in 1855. Then Samuel and Marion Pangburn were married and Martha Olivia was born in 111. The parents and some of the children moved to Anderson County, Kansas. Benjamin was born there.

Marriages of some of the Pangburns - Mercer Co., 111.

Kansas Marriages

Martin V. Kimball to Nancy Ellen Pangburn, 2 Oct 1862, Anderson Co., KS

William H. Wilson to Lydia Pangburn, 2 Oct 1868

Alonzo S. Pangburn to Helen Cornella Pratt, 5 Mar 1877 Julia Ann Pangburn did not move to Kansas:

#1050 John W. Stephens to Julia Ann Pangborn, 7 Oct 1857

Mrs. McCaw said they took out the I license, it wasn't returned to the county clerk by the minister, so they may or may not have gone through with the marriage. (My note: This situation seemed to be the case for a number of marriages - I would guess that the person who performed the marriage was careless about returning the information.)
