Pangburn Letter Vol.1 Letter 2 (Transcribed by Rick Pollard)
SEPTEMBER 1983 , Page 1
The PANGBURN LETTER is published at the cost of the Editor. The intent is non-profit and is to be used to diseminate information to others interested in the PANGBURN lines. This publication will print data submitted by anyone who has PANGBURN information, - perhaps by sharing with each other -we will be able to put together the PANGBURN story.
The first printing of Volume 1, Number I was mailed to over 150 genealogical societies and libraries throughout the United States, Canada and England. Another 50 copies were distributed to various individuals. The response was so gratifying that a second printing of 200 was ordered and we have been mailing them out as requested. If you know of anyone interested in receiving a copy, please send their name and address and they will be placed on the mailing list.
We hope to continue this newsletter, but to do so we must have YOUR material on PANGBURNS - (no matter how you spell it!)
THE IMMIGRANT CORNER
In the first issue we covered very briefly the various spellings of the PANGBURN name. We feel, as have other researchers in the past, that the name was probably derived from PANGBOURNE, a village or town in Berkshire, England.
Some additional information on our illustrious immigrant ancestor - - In the first newsletter we stated that Peter PANGBURN was born about 1640. There is a record of a Pieter PENGBORN (age 48 years) who appears on a list of soldiers defending Fort New York in the year 1689. He was a member of Captain Jacob Leisler's Company and his place of birth is shown as Oxfordshire, England,
On August 25, 1676, he was appointed a "currier"and in 1682 a sealer of leather. He had owned land in Newtown. Long Island prior to April 18, 1684 and leased land for a shop in 1689. He was made a freeman of New York City as a carman June 30, 1696.
What other information have you researchers found on Peter and his brothers. Edmund and Richard"'

1.Anyone know who Phebe Ann married?
2.Who were the parents of William and his sisters Harriet and Phebe? Mrs. Grimaldi thinks the parents could be John PANGBURN and Elizabeth LUCE of Albany County, New York.
3.Were there any other sisters or brothers? Mrs. Grimaldi came across a gravesite at North Fenton Cemetery, Broome Co., NY for Lydia Ann PANGBURN 1818-1895, who married Andrew RAMEY 1817-1895, Could this be a sister of William, Harriet & Phebe?
Mrs. Grimaldi has asked our help on the following :

And still another PANGBURN researcher with and Harriet in the line. Donald Disbrow has submitted the following information or, his line.
His g-g grandmother, Harriet Pangborn was born about 1800 (presumably in or near Albany, NY) and married Thomas WILLIS. They had a daughter Eveline (18 Jul 1820 - 17 Jan 1896) who married James Henry DEWEY (1813-1874). Mr. Disbrow further states that James (1782-???), the paternal uncle of James Henry DEWEY (husband of Eveline WILLIS) married a Phebe PANGBORN, born about 1785 in Schenectady, NY.
Sounds like Mr. Disbrow and Mrs. Grimaldi have Harriet and Phebe problems - one generation apart. Anyone care to speculate???

What is most interesting to note about this line is that Evan's first cousin, twice removed, Viola PANGBURN Roberts, from whence he obtained much of his early information, was doing extensive research on the PANGBURN line in the 30's and 40's. We came upon her name quite by accident while researching some Revolutionary War pension files. Right there in the middle of the files were her letters, requesting the same information. We understand that Viola's research and manuscripts have been donated to a library in Illinois. We have started procedures to obtain copies of these manuscripts; all will be shared in a future issue.

MISSING PERSON !
Has anyone seen this man ???
This is Clinton PANGBURN, born 26 Aug 1849, and according to all vital records, he is still alive and wandering around somewhere in New York We really know he died around the Buffalo area in the fall of 1897, (long after death records were required to be filed), but the records of Albany, Buffalo, and the Tonawandas all say he is alive (or at lease they can't find his death record).
If you see Clinton wandering around, please tell him to call home - - we have so much to discuss!

PANGBORN - All possible information wanted in regard to the ancestry and early life of Jason PANGBORN, who was born in NY State 13 June 1807. On 24 Sept- 1829 he married Eunice POST (also b in NY State) by whom he had 8 children, all of whom are now dead. In 185 5, she died and a year or so later he married again and had 3 more children, 2 of whom (Addie E. and Herbert) are now living in Maquoketa, Iowa. The father of Jason PANGBORN, I believe, was killed in the War of 1812.
We can't answer their questions at this late date, but the information they submitted might help one of you!
