The Pangburn Letter is published at the cost of the Editor. The intent is non-profit and is to be used to disseminate information to others interested in the PANGBURN lines. This publication will print data submitted by anyone who has PANGBURN information - perhaps by sharing with each other - we will be able to put together the PANGBURN story.
This issue of THE PANGBURN LETTER marks our first anniversary and, although it is only the third issue, we are gratified at this favourable response.
Our deepest gratitude to the various Genealogical and Historical Societies that have given us exposure in their publications. We are also greatly indebted to those of you who have taken the time to send in your family data and other miscellaneous PANGBURN material.
As you will note, much of the material presented is without documentation. It is our intent to publish ALL information with or without documentation, with the premise that one of you out there will unearth the primary source of this data, thus proving or disproving the material.
Some of us have been using material that was researched many years ago. We have all taken it as gospel - until we can prove otherwise! Remember, some of this material could be wrong . . . help us out . . . send us the correct information and we will publish it.
FAMOUS PANGBURNS OF THE PAST . . .
Throughout the years there have been many famous people bearing the surname Pangburn. This issue features CLYDE EDWARD PANGBORN, or as he was better known, Upside Down PANGBORN. Clyde was the son of Max J. Pangborn (John Jr., Levi, Howard) and Frances Opal Lamb, and was born 28 October 1896 at Bridgeport, Washington. He died 29 March 1958 in New York City and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
Clyde served in WWI and after the war he utilized his flying talents by becoming a well-known Barn Stormer. He was Chief Pilot and partner in the Gales Flying Circus during the 1920's, and his penchant for unorthodox flying soon carved him the name of UPSIDE DOWN PANGBORN. These daredevil performers in the flying circus wing walked, changed planes in mid-air and flew very dangerous and difficult manoeuvres. After Federal authorities closed down the antics of the barn-stormers, Pang, as he was known to his friends, turned to other flying pursuits.
After an unsuccessful try at an around-the-world race, Pang and his partner, Hugh Herndon, Jr., found themselves stranded in Khubarovsk, Siberia. Having nothing better to do, they decided to fly to Japan to vie for the $25,000 prize offered by a Japanese newspaper for the first successful Japan to United States flight, the first non-stop Trans-Pacific flight.
They took off from Sabishiru Beach, Japan, in their single-engine Bellanca, "Miss Veedol." Forty-nine hours and approximately 4600 miles later, they belly-landed their plane at Wenatchee, Washington, on October 5, 1931. The trip had not been without incident. Clyde had rigged his landing gear so they could be easily dropped from the plane during flight to lighten the load. When the landing gear failed to disengage, Clyde found himself utilizing his old talents by crawling out to manually release the gear, while in flight over the Pacific. Monuments have been erected to commemorate this flight at Wenatchee, Washington and Sabisiru Beech, Japan.
Does this man intrigue you? Want to know more about him? North Central Washington Museum, 127 S. Mission St., Wenatchee, Washington 98801 has an important collection of Clyde Pangborn material, including the bent propeller from "Miss Veedol." Inquiries can be sent to the Museum Director, Dr. William E. Steward, at this address. We have been fortunate to obtain copies of booklets and first-day covers sold at the museum. They also have copies of Carl M. Cleveland's book, Upside-Down Pangborn - King of the Barnstormers, is most informative, well-written and illustrated book. Our thanks to Lorene Dodd for obtaining this material for us.

In this issue we will present some of the work of Viola Pangburn Roberts, whose manuscript is on deposit at the Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois. Viola was a school teacher and spent her summers searching for PANGBURN information. Her work was done during the 1930's and 1940's, long before census indexes and all those good things we have today.
She traveled many miles during her summer vacations, researching at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., New York State Library in Albany, and visiting and actually interviewing various Pangburn families and seeking out information from their Bibles, documents, and most important, their memories. Although she hoped one day to write a book, her work was never published and her manuscript was donated to the Newberry Library by her sons after her death.
We contacted David Thackery, Librarian, Local & Family History Dept. of Newberry Library, and through his very able and helpful assistance, we obtained a microfilm copy of her manuscript. The Newberry Library has given us special permission to use this material in the PANGBURN LETTER. For those of you who are not familiar with this outstanding library, their address is 60 West Walton Street, Chicago, IL 60610. Now before you all run out and mail letters to the Newberry Library asking for information on the Pangburns - her material is NOT indexed and the order is random - very difficult to follow. We will be reviewing each page and will forward information on your lines as we come across it.

Sorry, Bruce - don't have anything on the Patterson line. Maybe some of our readers can help you. If you want more information on William Pangburn and Elizabeth Van der Bogart, see Volume 1, Number 1, page 2, Item #5.
There is also information on the burial of Lydia Ann Panburn who married Andrew Remy (Ramey) (a sister of your Anthony). Mrs. Gladys Grimaldi located her grave in North Fenton Cemetery, Broome Co, NY. (See Volume 1, Number 2, page 3, question 3).
Sorry, Gladys, as it works out, Lydia is not your ancestor - but I'll bet Bruce Ackerman is happy you found the gravesite.

Mrs Agerton has records that show Joseph Pangborn lived in New York and raised horses. He lived close to Lake Champlain on a farm, and moved to Ohio around 1821. He arrived in Big Island, Marion Co, Ohio in 1822. He fought in the battle of Plattsburg in the War of 1812 and had the rank of Major. It is said he was wounded in that battle. In the Lake Champlain area, his main business was transporting travelers and supplying teams and vehicles to that region.
Mrs. Agerton would like to know:
(1) Any records, dates, land transaction, etc., on Joseph Pangborn?
(2) Maiden name of wife and marriage date?
(3) Parents of Joseph Pangborn?
(4) Marriage date and place of marriage of Mary Pangborn and John Royal Miller?

Next, we have a joint Pangburn search by two researchers from different parts of the U. S. - one from Missouri and the other from Oregon.
Leonard Elwell writes: my great- grandfather was Edmund E. INGALLS born NY State Nov 1810 whose mother was Betsey MAC DONALD, daughter of John MAC DONALD and LYDIA PANGBURN. Family tradition says that Betsey's husband, Edmund, died young and she married J. Cole. Family tradition also says that Edmunds father was also named Edmund.
Mrs. Edward E. Pickett writes: My search begins with trying to determine the father of Edmund Ingalls, b 5 Dec 1810 in NY. First record of him is the 1850 cencus Van Buren Co, Michigan. I have no record prior to that time. Mrs. Pickett also states that family tradition shows that Edmund's mother was Betsey MC DONALD and that his father died young and Betsey married (2) J. Cole. There were several Cole sons and a daughter, Eleanor.
Mrs. Pickett has a copy of a letter written to her grandmother's sister by a Kate BUNNELL, Peryallup, Washington telling her about her father's family. She states that John MC DONALD (b Glasgow, Scotland) came to American& married LYDIA PAUGHBURN. Bunnell states that Lydia lived near the Hudson River and was Dutch. Bunnell wrote - J (assume this to be Jacob) was born 1782, then Joseph, John, Edward and Betsy. Lydia died at Betsy's birth and John McDonald remarried and has a son Robert. The family moved from Albany Co. to Schoharie Co. according to Bunnell.
At one point in the Bunnell letter she states "My father and Uncle Jo. . . " and refers to Betsy as " the sweetest Aunt I had" -- It appears that Kate Bunnell is the daughter of Jacob McDonald and the Uncle she refers to is Joseph (Jacob's brother) and the Aunt Betsy is the sister of Jacob and Joseph.
Now, if the above letters seem to be "related" - they are. Your Editor decided that these two people must be related - and if not - they should get to know each other to further their research. A phone call to Mrs. Pickett soon disclosed that she and Leonard Elwell are cousins and both doing genealogy.
Okay researchers, here are the questions:
(1) Who are the parents of Edmund Ingalls?
(2) Is Lydia Paughbum/Pangbum the daughter of
William Pangburn & Elizabeth Van de Bogert?
Mrs. Picket feels that this Lydia (b 1768) would be too young to have a child in 1781.
Editor's note. Our records show the 1768 date as a birth and also as a christening date Although young, we have found other records of marriages of 12-14 year old girls.
(3) Is Kate Bunnell a daughter of Jacob McDonald.)

June Frazier seeks help on her Pangburn research:
I am researching William Pangburn b ca 1742 New Jersey m 30 Dec 1770 to Hannah Fitz Randolph (b 5 Jan 1746 NJ). William died in Ionia Co, Mich 10 Mar 1852 at the age of 110. He was a Rev. War vet and a veteran of the War of 1812. 1 suspect that he was married a second time. At the time of his death, he was living with a daughter, Lovica Snow (wife of Alanson Snow) in Ronald Twp, Ionia Co, Mich.
Lovica died 22 Nov 1855 in Ionia Co and is buried next to her father in the Snow Cemetery. Lovica Pangborn and Manson Snow had a son, Richard Snow who beget Florence Lovica Snow (b 5 Jun 1860).
(1) Was William Pangburn/Pangborn married a second time? (2) Who were the parents of William?
(3) Does anyone have information on the death of Alanson Snow's mother who was slain by Indians in Ohio?
Editor's note: Phone conversation with June Frazier brought forth many important documents. She has copies of Pension records for William Pangburn showing that he was 63 years old in 1821 when he was allowed pension. His residence at that time was Wayne Co. Territory of Michigan. She also has a picture of his tombstone from Snow Cemetery, Ionia Co, Mich showing WILLIAM PANGBOURN- Died March 10, 1852 Aged 110 Yrs., 3 Months.
From MICHIGAN MILITARY RECORDS (Pensioners of Territorial Michigan), Wayne Co, Michigan shows that William Pangburn was 75 years old on Nov 30, 1821 when placed on the pension rolls.
Confusing, isn't it!
June can't prove that she is researching the right William Pangburn. The Randolph-PANGBURN Genealogy, publ 1909, by Pangburn Society of Allegheny County,-shows that very little is known of William Pangburn that married Hannah Fitz Randolph. The time and place of his death are not known, according to this book(pg, 5 4). The book also shows that several of William & Hannah's sons went to Southern Ohio in 1815 and Hannah (then a widow) followed a few years later.
Okay researchers -- if s up to you-- what help can you give us on this line. Is June following the right William Pangburn --or do you know which William had a daughter Lovica and was a Rev War veteran?

One of the highlights of our trip last October was meeting two very special people, Edith & Tom Pangburn. It was a pleasure to finally shake the hand of a "Pangburn" and their friendliness and hospitality gave us a chance to stop and share our genealogical findings. Edith, a most fantastic lady, shared some of her treasured photographs of the Pangburn family with us - picture we too will treasure the rest of our lives. To us, it is most interesting to see if Tom's family looks like our side of the Pangburn line. Guess if you really want to, you can always find some features in common.
Tom , a most gracious host, was also helpful - reminiscing keeping us spellbound - waiting for each word - just to hear about the Pangburn's. Edith has shared her many hours of research with us and we'll start with Tom's line:

In closing, we would like to ask a couple of questions. (1) Do any of you researchers have information or" family traditions" connecting the PANGBURN name with that of Anneke Jans Bogardus and the suit of her heirs with Trinity Church in New York City?
That's about all for this edition - next one due out in September. We wish to say thanks to a very special couple, Bob & Fabby Cutler, not only for their hospitality, but for their help on our research. Also a big thank you for your kind words of encouragement and particularly for all the material you have shared with us. We apologize that all material could not be used in this edition, but September is not far away and yours will be included then. Keep the material coming - we still look forward to many future editions. Happy ancestor hunting - but be sure to let us know who you find.'!
