Before me, William Tisdale, one of the Justices for the County of Craven, Personally appeared James Hollis(?) who being duly sworn Deposeth.
That he was sent for by William Gatlin on the eighth day of January 1793. On his arrival at his Dwelling house, he found him very Ill in bed, and as he apprehended near his end, but in his Senses. Mr. Gatlin then Informed this Deponent that he had sent for him, in part, to bear Witness relative to his Will. He then told this Deponent that he had made a Will some time before, which had been searched for but could not be found, and requested this Deponent, Mary Porter, & Nancy Arthur, to attend to his nuncupative or Verbal Will, which he then proposed to make which he did as follows.
He lent to his Wife Amy Gatlin during her natural Life, All his Estate, real and personal. After her Death he bequeathed to his Brother Lazarus Gatlin, a Negro boy named America. The Remainder of his Estate to be equally Divided between David Gatlin, Mary Purify & Sophia Cuttrell, which he further declared was agreeable to the Will he had mentioned and which could not be found.
