Howard Ray Rice was born on 24 November 1942 at Floyd County, Kentucky. He was the son of Oscar Ola Rice and Nellie Ann Compton. Howard Ray Rice married Lyla Kay Howard, daughter of ? Howard and Alda Lykins. Howard Ray Rice died on 22 October 2010 at Magoffin County, Kentucky, at age 67.
His obituary on 25 October 2010: Howard Ray Rice was born on November 24, 1942. After a brief but very harsh struggle with cancer, Howard passed away on Friday morning, October 22, 2010. Both of Howard Ray’s parents are pre-deceased. Howard’s father was Oscar O. Rice and his mother was Nellie Ann Compton Rice. Howard is survived by a long list of loved ones. Howard Ray was married to his loving wife Lyla Kay (Howard) Rice on September 11, 1965. This year Howard and Kay celebrated their forty-fifth (45th) year of marriage. From their marriage, came three (3) children: Danny Ray Rice who is married to Sheila Rice, Danny and Sheila live in Mallie Kentucky; Beth Ann Conley who is married to JD Conley of Salyersville, KY; and Waynette McFarland who is married to Don Wayne McFarland of Salyersville, Ky. Howard Ray also left behind six (6) grandchildren that meant the absolute world to him: Dustin Minix, Joe Minix, Rachel Rice, Colby Rice, Hannah McFarland and Max McFarland. Howard Ray Rice was one of six (6) children. He was preceded in death by three (3) brothers: Lucian George Rice; Jack Moses Rice and James Luther Rice. Howard is survived by one sister Betty Rice Hopkins of Charleston, South Carolina and one (1) brother, commonly known as “The Big O”, Oscar Rice of Martin, Kentucky. Howard Ray was a loving, caring and spiritual person. Howard was a member of the Burning Fork Community Church. Howard attended church faithfully for many years and he accepted Jesus Christ as his savior in September of this year. As a young man, Howard Ray proudly served his country. Howard served for several years in the United States Air Force. He completed basic training in Texas and was stationed numerous places throughout our country and the world abroad. He was honorably discharged from his service and then he eventually came back home to work in Salyersville, Kentucky. As you all know, Howard Ray Rice and Louie Reed worked as masonry contractors for many years. R & R Masonry is responsible for thousands of churches, businesses, homes and buildings of all types in Kentucky. Howard was a perfectionist on the job and he took much pride in his work. This is all fine background information about Howard Ray Rice, it’s describes his heritage, his work history and his background. However, there is so much more to Howard Ray than when his born, when he passed away and the physical things that he left behind. When I think of Howard, several words come to mind, the first word that automatically comes to mind is LOVE. There is a saying that “the most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love and to let it come in.” Howard Ray strongly loved his wife Kay, his children, his grandchildren, all of his family and his friends with a passion that could not be questioned. I believe that one scripture from the Bible accurately describes the loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and that Howard Ray truly was, and this is found in Corinthians Ch 1 —13. Love is kind, it does not envy. It does not boast. It is not proud, it is not rude. It is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices in truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails, And now these three remain: Faith, Hope and Love, but the greatest of these is Love. This scripture is typically heard at weddings, but I believe that every single word of this verse accurately describes Howard Ray Rice. He attended hundreds, perhaps thousands, of baseball, basketball and football games to support his children and grandchildren. Howard always attended piano recitals, cheerleading events, dance recitals for his grandchildren. He also never hesitated at the opportunity to go to Knott County and baby sit, play and spend time with his grandchildren whenever the opportunity presented itself. What stands out about all of the support that Howard gave his wife Kay, his children and his grandchildren is that he did not go and participate in all of their activities out of obligation, but out of nothing more than absolute unconditional love. To his family, Howard Ray was a protector and a provider and was always loving and kind. To countless, no doubt thousands of young people that he coached in Little League Baseball, Howard was a role model, a leader and an inspiration. To his friends, he was true, which leads us to the next word that describes Howard Ray. That word is character. Howard Ray was an honest man, a decent man and a true man of character. The Bible tells us that “good men must die, but death cannot kill their names.” Howard Ray and Louie Reed, while working under the company name R & R Masonry have left their mark on Kentucky. No matter where you go in Kentucky, it is easy find a church, a home or some other beautiful building that was blocked or bricked by their powerful hands. Howard Ray was the hardest working person that I have ever seen. No one ever needed a contract for work that was done by Howard, his handshake and his word were truly his bond, which was indeed a bond that would not be broken. He took pride in the houses and structures that he helped build and he often told me how relaxed and at peace he was while he was on the job. Howard loved to look back at his completed product and know that it was a job that was well done to absolute perfection. Howard Ray was simply a good man who loved and served his country, he was the ultimate protector and provider for his family and he was a solid, true and loyal friend. My dad recently described Howard Ray in a very simple but powerful way when he said that “Howard Ray just made the world a better place.” This is probably the truest statement that I have ever heard that describes a good and descent man like Howard Ray Rice. General George Patton said,” It is foolish and wrong to mourn the real men who have died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived.” Howard Ray was an honest and a real man and I do thank God that he lived. Howard Ray Rice was also fun-loving, had a great sense of humor, was Magoffin County Sports fanatic and he loved life and he enjoyed every minute that he had on this earth. Baseball was one of Howard’s passions. He was able to follow Danny Ray from Little League, to High School, to College. After that, it was his grandkid’s turn. Howard turned his attention to Dustin and Joe and followed them throughout high school and for the last few years he has been an absolute supporter and baseball fan of his grandson Max. Howard probably never missed a baseball game that involved any of his children or grandchildren. If he did miss a game, I am sure that it was because of a pressing obligation at work or an emergency that simply could not be helped. Howard loved to play golf and he was good at it. Howard enjoyed the time that he got to spend having fun with his family and friends on the golf course. One of his favorite times of the year was the annual golf trip that a large group of us took to South Carolina each year. He not only got to play golf on beautiful golf courses with his family and friends, but he and his brother Oscar often got to visit and spend time with their sister-in-law Maxine and their sister Betty and her husband Carson, who all live in South Carolina. Unfortunately, cancer did not let Howard go on the trip this year, but he was sorely missed by everyone and was there in thought, in prayer and in spirit. Howard Ray also loved bowling. Howard was a competitor and was good at whatever he did and he bowled in a number of leagues for many years. He actually bowled two perfect games with scores of three hundred. Howard took a great deal of pride in the ring that he received for bowling those perfect games. In closing, Howard Ray was also a spiritual man. He firmly believed in God and made preparation for eternity when he accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour. Howard was sick, he was tired, he was weak and heavy laden, and God touched him with his finger and let him sleep, have peace and have rest. Socrates said “Death may be the greatest of all human blessings and the day which we fear as our last is but the birthday of eternity.” Howard Rice was a decent and wise man who made preparations for Heaven and for eternity. Death never takes a wise man by surprise, he is always ready to go. Howard was wise and was ready to go. I am 100 % certain that the gates of Heaven have swung wide open to accept Howard Ray and he is rejoicing with his family and friends that have gone on before him. I have often heard that every man dies, but not every man really lives. Howard Ray lived a wonderful life. Our pastor, Eddie Dennison has often preached a sermon that involves a person’s headstone. Sure, it may say the day a man is born and the day that a man dies. But the most important thing about the headstone is the hyphen that
separates the date of birth and the date of death, that hyphen defines who were and what you did as a person on earth. Howard Ray filled in that hyphen with a depth of life that was filled with love, with passion and with a character that cannot be questioned or denied. When we think about Howard we have options. We can shed tears that he is gone or we can smile because he has lived. We can close our eyes and pray that he’ll come back or we can open our eyes and see what he has left. Our hearts can be empty, because we cannot see him, or we can be full of the love that we shared. We can turn our back on tomorrow and live yesterday or we can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. We can remember only that he his gone or we can cherish his memory and let it live on. We can cry and close our minds, be empty and turn our backs or we can do what Howard would want, smile, open our eyes, love and go on. Howard Ray will be forever missed by his loving wife Kay, his children, his grandchildren, his brother and sister and all of his good friends, but no doubt our sad loss is Heaven’s gain. Today, we should celebrate the life of Howard Ray Rice, but we should know that there is bigger and better celebration going on in Heaven, because a Saint has come home. He was buried at Salyersville, Magoffin County, Kentucky.

PRATER CREEK IS SCENE OF BLOODY BATTLE SATURDAY SIX OTHERS WOUNDED
One of the bloodiest battles ever to occur in Kentucky took place during a school trustee election on the head of Prater Creek in Floyd county late last Saturday afternoon and as a result five persons are dead and six others have bullet holes in their body. Seated on the opposite sides of the table, the two factions, one supporting Arnold Robinette and the other Arville Sammons, "shot it out." When the smoke of battle cleared, Wilburn Conn and Wayne Click were dead, and nine others wounded, Green Conn, Mimms Conn and his son Millard Conn died Sunday from their wounds. Lawrence Conn, another son of Mimms Conn is shot through the bowels and is a dying condition. Ike Conn who was wounded in right thigh is at liberty under a $10,000 bond on each of two charges in the killing of Mimms and Millard Conn. He was arrested after treatment at the Beaver Valley Hospital at Martin, by Sheriff B. F. Sturgill of Floyd County. All other participants in the bloody battle are dead or in the hospital at Martin. Witnesses said there were no signs of drinking at the school election but the night was bitter between the two factions. It is said that more than $500 was spent in the school district by the two sides.
Sol Sammons, the candidate for school trustee supported by the Green Conn faction, it is said, was leading by two votes when the shooting took place. Two votes were ready to be cast for Arnold Robinette, the candidate backed by Mimms Conn and sons and Hayden Howell. As the two voters arrived according to the report, Green Conn stepped inside the three into the room where the election was being held and announced that time for closing the polls was at hand. The opposition and Hayden Howell were seated at the table to tabulate the two more votes for his candidate. Mrs. Martha Conn, wife of Green Conn, snatched at the poll sheet, it was reported and Lawrence Conn did likeness whereupon Green Conn knocked the latter down with fists. Guns then began to blaze across the little table. "When this happened," Hayden Howell is reported to have said at the hospital, "Millard Conn shot Green in the back as Green started to pull a pistol. Then the shooting was almost continuous. There were from thirty to forty men and women in the room and I saw the men fall on every side of me. I was unarmed and the fight was between Mimms and his son, Millard and Lawrence on one side against Green, Ike and Wilburn Conn and Wayne Click on the other. As I ran from the midst, stooped over, a bullet hit me in the back." Lawrence Conn was quoted as saying at the hospital at Martin that Ike Conn shot him while he stood begging for his life, his revolver in his holster. Mimms Conn is quoted at the hospital at Martin that when the shooting began, he crouched behind a door and took no part in the fight, but that Ike Conn after shooting several others, turned and saw him and fired upon him. It is said that Millard and Ike Conn did most of the shooting. Three teachers are necessary for the school at which the shooting took place. Sol Sammons was a candidate with an announced intention of recommending Woodrow Conn, Richard Hall, and Green Conn, Jr., as teachers. Jerry Howell was named as one of the teachers to be appointed by Arnold Robinette, the other candidate. Other disturbances were reported from other sections of the state in the school trustee elections held last Saturday. One is reported killed in Breathitt County and two were wounded in Lawrence County. The election passed off quietly in Johnson County. on 6 July 1933.
