Notes for Rachel ALLEN

In the 77th year of her age at the time of her death. (Windham Cemetery
grave marker)

Surname: Recorded as 'Allyn' in Windham VRs, p. 1:13; 'Alin' in
Manchester, Mass. VRs, (Search & ReSearch CD), p. 7.

Burial: Tombstone reads: 'In memory of Rachel Hutchinson, wife of Mr.
Samuel Hutchinson who died May ye 6th. 1752, in the 77th year of her
age.' (Windham Cemetery grave marker)

"There were many Allens in New England at an early period of its
settlement, and branches of at least three families found their way to
Windham at an early date." Allen genealogies begin with "Joshua Allen
was an early settler of Windham at the 'Ponds' now Mansfield. He
purchased, June 25, 1695, a 1,000 acre right there (No. 18) of Daniel
Wetherell, of New London, an original proprietor. His home lot was
probably near the 'Hollow'. He, with his son John, were admitted
inhabitants of the town in 1695, where he came from to Windham is not
ascertained. ......" "William Allen, from Salem, Mass., was the ancestor of
the South Windham Allen family [and probably Rachel's brother]. In
company with SAMUEL HUTCHINSON [Rachel's Husband], also of Salem, he
purchased of Rev. Samuel Whiting, for 120 English pounds, May 30, 1709,
150 acres of land partly in Windham and partly in Lebanon, near 'Pigeon
Swamp.' This tract probably included the homestead of the late Amos D.
Allen, a short distance west of South Windham village, where his father
also lived. William Allen, the settler, was a cooper. We have not been
able to trace out the progenitors of William Allen with certainty. It
would seem probable that he might have been a grandson of William
Allen, the settler at Salem 1626, who was a companion of Roger
Conant......." "Samuel Allen, the common ancestor of one branch of the
Windham Allens, was an early settler of Braintree, perhaps as early as
1632, was freeman May 6, 1635. ......." (History of Ancient Windham, CT.
Genealogy Part I. (Abbe to Billings), by William L. Weaver, 1864, ALLEN
Family, pp. 30-39)
Record of LDS Church ordinance (living or proxy).
