Notes made by Elizabeth Hutchinson Patterson, David's Granddaughter:
"Relating to photo of first home of David and Betsy Hayward Hutchinson,
my grandfather and grandmother. This was part of the property
originally owned by Captain Nathan Hutchinson, great grandfather of
Betsy. Nathan was a distant relative of Elisha. He had extensive
holdings and gave a farm to each of his sons. This and the adjoining mill
probably were deeded to his sons Ebenezer and Bartholomew. I have
copies of the original deeds. I do not know how the property passed to
David and Betsy. Perhaps Betsy's parents Nehemiah and Rebecca
Hutchinson Hayward lived here and David and Betsy lived with them after
she was married. The History of Milford says Nehemiah Hayward lived on
his farm near the Milton line before he moved to Baltimore in 1847. This
house is near Milton line and other facts which I have gathered point to
this being their house.
"Here David and Betsy came to live when they were married in 1829, and
three of their children were born here, Georgianna, Hayward and Jesse.
"I am told David sold the mill property and water rights for $10,000, a
goodly sum in those days. This must have been about 1834. Dams were
built there at that time.
"Miss Abbott, who now lives in this house, has told me of several very
vivid appearances or visions in which she says Aunt Abby (David's
sister), whom she identifies from a picture of her in the History of
Milford, appeared to her.
"After leaving this house, David must have gone to live at the 'Old
Homestead' until he bought the farm where he later lived, for my father
Elias was born at the 'Old Homestead' in 1835 and was the only one of
the children born there.
"Second home of David and Betsy Hayward Hutchinson (see photo as well
as stereopticon picture). This is the house where David spent the rest of
his life. Betsy died in 1863. David in 1881. This picture was taken after
Betsy died. David and his sister Abby are standing near the door. His son
John, his wife and two sons are at side of house."
