Notes for Samuel HUTCHINSON

!Birth & Death: Source: LDS Ordinance Index, v. 1.00.

Died single. (Chester, p. 25)

Died unmarried. (Derby, p. 10); (_Massachusetts and Maine Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis (1885-1966)_, by Walter Goodwin Davis with an Introduction by Gary Boyd Roberts, Genealogical Publishing Co, Inc., Baltimore, Maryland, 1996, p. 2:325.)

Burial: His tombstone, in Windham, Connecticut, reads: "Here lies the body of Mr. Samuel Hutchinson, who lived a sober, virtuous life and hopefully died in the faith of ye Lord Jesus, February 22nd 1758, in the 77th year of his age." He removed to Windham, Connecticut, about 1710, as that year he ceased to be taxed in Danvers. He married Rachel Allen, sister of William Allen, who came to Windham with Samuel. (Cutter, p. 82)

Surname: Recorded as 'Hutchison' in Windham VRs, p. 1:13.

Note from Dave: Although Chester, Derby and Davis all state that Samuel died unmarried, there is sufficient evidence to the contrary. Also, I don't know for a fact, but Davis and Derby may have used Chester's conclusion because they had nothing else at the time. The following helps place this Samuel Hutchinson in Windham, Windham County Connecticut after 1710:
- A Samuel Hutchinson and a William Allen, both of Salem, Mass., purchased land from Rev. Samuel Whiting, for £120, on May 30, 1709. See _Town of Windham, Conn., Deeds, Vol. DD, 1705-1718_, p. 90, LDS Film #0005907, and _History of Ancient Windham, CT. Genealogy Part I. (Abbe to Billings)_, by William L. Weaver, 1864, ALLEN Family, pp. 30-39 [part of this is quoted in the notes for Samuel's wife Rachel Allen].
- This Samuel (son of Joseph, son of Richard) ceased to be taxed in Salem in 1710. See Salem tax records.
- There is a grave marker in the Windham Cemetery at Windham Center for a Samuel Hutchinson who died Feb. 22, 1758 at age 76. That would put the birth year of the Samuel in Windham at 1682, the same as this Samuel. (See Windham Cemetery grave markers as transcribed by Jan Harris,
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/4791/windhamcem.html).
- Samuel of Windham named his second son Joseph, perhaps after his father.
