Grandson of Hon. Roger Sherman,signer of the Declaration of Independence. A
graduate of Yale University, Rev. Sherman was installed pastor of the Unitarian
Church of Olden Barneveld in the year 1806,the first of it's kind in the state
of New York.He later established an academy there in Olden Barneveld (Trenton
Village).The Rev. John Sherman had previously visited the surrounding
countryside of Trenton Village and being an ardent lover of nature,could not
forget the beauty of the falls there on the West Canada Creek,Kanata or Amber
River.He purchased 60 acres of land from the Holland Land Co. in 1822, which
included the Sherman Fall or First Fall. He then built a small building for the
temporary stay of visitors and called it the "Rural Resort".The following
year,it became the permanent home for his family.In 1824,his first "guests"
were Philip Hone and Dominick Lynch of New York.The former being the Mayor of
New York in 1826. They both inquired as to why he didn't erect a building of
sufficient size to entertain guests.Rev. Sherman replied, "Did you ever know a
clergyman who had any money?" Mr. Hone then offered to loan him five thousand
dollars. Soon,the house was enlarged and it's notoriety grew.
