BIOGRAPHICAL:
Collections of Early County Historical Society, 1979, Vol 2, p 132-136: Hope Bids Me Onward, edited by Harriet Gift Castlen, private printing, abt 1945: The maturing of a gifted young man whose name was Gift - George Washington Gift, a Southern lad born in Memphis, Tennessee... Seventy-five years elapsed before the family papers were discovered by the editor, a daughter of Gift. The letters had been written by her parents to each other during the Civil War and safely stored in a small, black leather trunk... In 1848, alone and scarely 15 years of age, George Gift left Memphis by steamboat, bound for Cincinnati where it was necessary for him to take another boat for Wheeling, Virginia, then across the mountains by stagecoach to Cumberland in Maryland, thence to Annapolis by rail, where he presented himself for examinations at the Naval Academy. His appointment had come from President James K. Polk, as a mark of respect to George's father, a neighbor and friend.... Gift served the U.S. Navy until he resigned in 1851 with the intent of entering civil life in the state of California under the guidance of his father, who had moved to that state from Tennessee. For awhile everything seemed to turn to gold, but he and his family indulged in extravagancies and person sorrows came his way in 1860 with the death of the first born of his two sons, followed shortly by the death of his young wife. With the outbreak of war in 1861, Gift determined to return to Tennessee "to draw his sword in defense of the right." On tendering his services to the Confederacy in Montgomery he received an appointment as Master in the Navy, later as a Lieutenant. Subsequently, he served on the Louisiana at Fort Jackson and on board the Arkansas on Yazoo and Red Rivers... Gift arrived during the summer of 1862 on the Chattahoochee River... The Navy Yard is located nearby at Saffold, Georgia... It was at Colonel Johnston's home that George first met Ellen Shackelford... "her straight little nose, her crown of brown curls, her big blue eyes, her elegance, her intelligence, her beautiful English, lovely intonation, her retraint... George Gift married Ellen Shackelford at The Pines on April 6, 1864. ... a son was born on the 31st of May and this final declaration: "When it seems right, we plan to go to my beautiful California, to establish the home of which we have so long dreamed."
