40. James Moore4 COWDREY [1193] (Ann "Nancy"3 Moore, James2, William1), born 17 Aug 1795 in Edgefield Dist, SC; died 14 Jun 1866 in Marion Co, AR.  He married on 26 Sep 1832 in Izard Co, AR Agness MCCUBBIN [9954], born 26 Apr 1814 in Hopkins Co, KY; died 8 Dec 1858 in Yellville, Marion Co, AR.

Notes for James Moore COWDREY
From Henrietta MAYSON Connor Holt: James Cowdry studied medicine, and graduated in Columbia, SC  He went West. When he started out, he came by Cokesbury to see me, spent a week with me. When he left, I said to him, "Brother, do write to me very soon."  He held my hand, looked me very hard in the face, both of us crying.  He said,"Sister, if I prosper, make money and accumulate wealth, you shall hear from me.  If not, you will get no tidings from me."  Well, he was gone just twenty-six years before he ever wrote to any of us.  After traveling years in South America and Mexico, he remained some years in Mexico, then came to Yellville, Washington Co. Ark. (I think).  Married there and had quite a large family, all grown now. My brother has been dead several years.  I don't know any of his family.

Notes for Harriet COWDREY
From Family History by Henrietta MAYSON Connor Holt: Harriet Cowdry married Mr. James Shackleford, a gentleman that came from Charleston up the country, to Cambridge, bought a large farm some five miles from there, had quite a number of slaves.  He boarded at my father's, fell in love with my sister Harriet, although she was so young, only fifteen.  He insisted on having his way until he prevailed.  My mother had her trunk already packed to send her to Augusta to school but had to yield to his entrieaties. He was a most successful farmer, lived on his farm for a number of years, then moved his family to Cokesbury for the benefit of the fine schools that were there, educated his children finely.  After living there several years, he sold
all his possessions in Abbeville County and moved to Georgia, Early County,
bought land on the Chattahoochee, about a hundred miles below Columbus.  He
died soon after the surrender.  He had five or six hundred slaves.  They raised ten children, eight daughters and two sons....

Harriet Cowdrey, daughter of John and Nancy Cowdrey in 1814.  Their eldest daughter m. Bishop Wightman, of SC.  My mother was b. 1800; my father 1786.  The question of importance to me was Colonel James Moore, my great grandfather, the son or grandson of Governor James Moore, of SC.

Collection of Early County Historical Society, 1971, Vol 1, p 71-72: The Shackelford Place by Mary Grist Whitehead: The Shackelford plantation was one of the largest of the river plantations located in the 26th District of Early County during the pre-Civil War period. It was comprised of more than 3,000 acres, extending many miles along the river front on the Georgia side. James Shackelford moved into Early County during the 1840's and reared a family of three children, two daughters and one son. During the time that the Confederate Navy Yard was in operation, his daughter Hannah fell in love with and married a young officer, Cowles Myles Collier, of Virginia, who was stationed at Saffold. The other daughter, Georgianna, married Richard K. Hines; the only son, James Fletcher, left Early County in 1883 to enter the drug business in Columbus, due to the financial collapse of the plantation system. In subsequent years, the family sold their vast holdings at a time when land was cheap.  The land brought in only $1.00 per acre for high land and $5.00 an acre for bottom land. In 1922, the late John H. Williams, Sr. purchased from Mrs. Nelle C. Golden, Mrs. Nannie C. Powell, J.H. Crozier, and G.T. Crozier 2,130 acres, more or less, which still bear the name of the original owner. They are known today as the "Shackelford place." Mr. & Mrs. J. H. Williams, Jr., are the present owners. The tract held today is about two-thirds of the original plantation. The old plantation home, located on Land Lot 405, burned years ago. A boat landing, gin, cotton press, and slave quarters supported the manor house. Remains of drainage ditches dug by slave labor are evident today. When the Shackelfords sold the property, they retained the ten-acre family burial ground in Land Lot 404. Some years later, the family removed the bodies. These fertile acres abound in wildlife such as: deer, which had become almost extinct until restocked by river landowners in the late 1930's, squirrels raccoons, turkeys, quail and other small birds, the savage wildcat and bobcat. Beavers are prolific; one site is called Beaver Pond, in recognition of the untiring work of the energetic beaver who dammed the pond. The Shackelford Place is famous throughout this section as a hunting preserve. Not only is this large plantation known for its row crops and wildlife, but it generates memories of southern plantation life at its best during the mid-19th century. p 47: Landowners along the Lower River Road include the Kidds, Freemans, Grists, Howells, Williams, and Hightowers... The Shackelford Plantation, owned by James Shackelford (1840), who had 3,000 acres. There was once a cotton press, gin, and boat landing on the place...  The first murder in Early County (in 1820 or 1821), was that of Brown Liverman, who was killed by one of his Negro men on the upper part of the Shackelford Plantation. (from Joel Perry's History of Early County, p. 7).
