Elizabeth and Andrew Jackson.
STERLING LANIER
b. Oct 1, 1784 Rockingham Co. N.C. d. Jan 31, 1870 in
Montgomery , AL. He owned a chain of Hotels including the
Exchange Hotel in Montgomery where he was labeled "a wonderful
host". m. Clark Co., Ga. Sarah Vivian Smallwood b. 1803
d. 1877 Montgomery, AL. Both are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Macon, Ga.
ROBERT SAMPSON LANIER, son of Sterling,and, A prominent lawyer in Montgomery,
b. Sept. 22, 1819 , Clark Co..Ga. d. Montgomery, AL 1893.
m. Mary Jane Anderson, a music teacher . Both were buried in Rose Hill
Cemetery in Macon, Ga.
SIDNEY CLOPTON LANIER, who when grown dropped the name Clopton which
was given him for his fathers old college mate.
His father wanted him to study law like other members of the family
but Sidney studied Music instead.
Sidney Lanier b. Feb. 4, 1882 Macon, Ga. d. Sept.7, 1881 NC
in a T.B. Sanitorium. m. Mary Day, who did what she could toward
keeping her family together during the long, hard struggle with
Sidney's illness.
CHARLES DAY LANIER, son of Sidney and Mary Day Lanier
was born Sept. 12, 1868, d. 1945. He was publisher of OLD
AMERICAN REVIEWS in Montgomery.? He married May Field/
Fields of Louisville, Ky.b. 1873, d. Aug. 10, 1962 in Greenwich, Conn.
May Fields Lanier led the fight to preserve and restore
Stratford Hall, the home of the Lees in Va., built 1729.
She enlisted her friends and together they raised sufficient funds
to buy the old Lee mansion and the thousand acres surrounding it
and restored it to the historic show place it is today.
