I notice you have Petschacks in your family line. My g.g.grandfather was
Johann Gottfried Petschack 1829-1905.
On Sunday 24.10.99 I was in Pomorsko (formerly Pommerzig) the ancestral
village of Petschacks traced back to Sebastian Petschack born about 1690.
Visited by Arthur Porter in 1899.

I spent an hour with an elderly lady, Elsbeth Zubik, who took me to the
cemetery to show me her husband's grave. She was German, but had married a
Pole Mikolaj Zubik who died in March 1990. It was unusual to meet a German
still there who had been born in Pommerzig (in a house she showed me next
to the cemetery). Her maiden name was Elsbeth Paech. She showed me her
brother's grave. He was Erwin Paech, born 1927, died 1941. Her parents
had fled to Potsdam in 1945, but she had remained and spent the rest of her
life in her birthplace. There is nothing else German evident except the
crypt of the von Schmettau family who helped finance the building of the
village church, and their manor house/castle which is now a secondary
school after it passed out of their hands in the 1920's.
Most of the German plaques on local churches are riddled with bullet holes,
dating from 1945, I guess. All German headstones have been removed and the
original German cemetery plots now lawn area.
