Born on February 10, 1821, possibly in Lincoln County, Tennessee. She married Isaac Newton Gattis on September 10, 1840. Mother of William Sutton Gattis.
"She said the first time she met him she knew that he was the only man she would marry, and the only man she would ever love. While he was courting her, he gave her a bottle of perfume. The bottle was shaped like a lizard. She kept the perfume a few days and wouldn't show it to anyone. She was ashamed that she had accepted a gift from a young man. The next time he came she gave it back to him and told him never to give her a gift again. She is my paternal grandmother." notes of Vashti Gattis Ware "I remember in my childhood, living with Grandma "Tishia" Gattis, where I met her sister and brother." - letter from Mattie Gattis Campbell, 1966 "Now Letitia Gattis was our father's mother. The sweetest person ever lived. She was married to Isaac Newton Gattis in Fayetteville, Tennessee, and they moved to Beach Grove, Tennessee, bought land and built a home there on a farm about two miles out from the little town of Beach Grove. Later on became known as Larkin's Cove. That's where I and Tidy had our first day in school." unsigned note, most likely written by Mattie Gattis Campbell |
