There is and has been a need for all of us at one time or another to obtain family information/records from (among other places) cemeteries and funeral homes.  This information is necessary in order for the researcher to find, document and/or verify family birth and death data and help with connecting family lines.  As you know, this task is especially difficult when the necessary contacts and facilities are in a city that you are not familiar with and when you do not even know if the facility is still in business.  Some of the more common questions asked are:

  • Is the facility still in business?
  • Where did the records go if they are out of business?
  • Where do I write for copies?
  • What is the telephone number?

The Genealogy Request Guide has been designed to aid researchers so they can request information about their ancestors. Included will be the address and telephone number of facilities in an area, plus any other pertinent information that is known about the records they hold, request limits, cost, etc. as we find this information.

The Genealogy Request Guide will add facilities and other categories and geographical areas as we can get their information.  If you have any information regarding a facility on the list or to add an additional facility's information, please send a message to: pfrazer@flash.net.

Click on the link to the left for the city or state you would like to search.  At this time, there are only listings for the St. Louis, Missouri, area. However, the site will be expanded to include other cities and states as we grow.  If not listed, please send us any information you have found and we'll be happy to add it to the list.  On each state page (i.e., Missouri, Illinois, etc.), you will find a sample request letter and some general guidelines that apply to a typical request.  If you are new to the Genealogy Request Guide web site and/or family research, it is recommended you start by visiting the state page for general guidelines that apply to any request.  You can reach the city listings of your choice from any page, where facilities are grouped by category (i.e., Cemetery, Funeral Home, etc.)

Please check back often for updated lists and information.  Good luck in your research!

We hope you have found the Genealogy Request Guide helpful in requesting records from facilities.  If you have any comments or suggestions as to how we can make the site better, or any additional tips we can provide, please send them to: pfrazer@flash.net.

Thank you to all of you genealogists who have an interest in helping to make these searches easier.  Also, our thanks go out to the many facilities out there that are "genealogy-friendly!"  Once this site has been up and running for a while and we get some feedback, we will be giving facilities a "Genealogist-Friendly" rating of between one and five.  Please send any feedback about your experience with a facility to pfrazer@flash.net.
