PURDON
Noel Purdon - n.purdon@optusnet.com.au
(8 Feb 02)
The Purdons
have lived in Renfrewshire from the 17th c. to the present day.
Most were involved in the textile and provisions industries as hand-loom
silk and linen weavers, bleachers, carpenters, smiths, printers,
engineers, brewers and millers. During the late 19th c many
migrated to Canada, America and Australia. Our branch are
descendents of JAMES PURDON and MARGARET FULTON who married in
Lochwinnoch in 1846, and there had five children: ANN, AGNES, JAMES,
WILLIAM FULTON and ANDREW.
WILLIAM and
ANDREW sailed to the New World in the 1880's, settling respectively in
Providence, Rhode Island and New London, Connecticut. WILLIAM
married JANET McDONALD in 1882, scarcely after they had
disembarked. Both brothers had children born in the U.S. in
1890.
WILLIAM made a
further move, travelling by rail with his young family to San Francisco
where they took ship for Sydney in 1897 and settled in Balmain. Of
his four sons, JAMES, twins HENRY PAUL and WILLIAM PETER and Australian
born THOMAS (1899), JAMES married LILLIAN TRACEY at Balmain in 1907, and
in turn had four sons. The third was my father, who married DORIS
BEATRICE MacMILLAN at Parramatta in 1940. They continued the
tradition and had four sons of whom I am the eldest. Members of
this family continue to live with dozens of children and grandchildren
around Sydney and the NSW coastline.
