This Goudie family has been
researched back to a William Gowdie (sic) and his wife Mary (nee Macrae).
Whilst their marriage is still being sought, it is believed to have
occurred ca 1797 in Paisley. Their two known children were John
Macrae Gowdie (bn ca 1798 Paisley m Margaret Macome) and
William Laurie Goudie (bn 1799 Paisley m Elizabeth Macarthur). For
generations this family of coopers conducted their business in Paisley,
with all known marriages and baptisms occurring in High
parish.
John Macrae Gowdie married
Margaret Macome in 1817 and by 1821 appeared as a suitable candidate for
emigration to Upper Canada by the Paisley Townhead Emigration Society.
It is doubtful whether he and his family (1 dau aged 3 yrs and a son aged
1.5 yrs) actually emigrated as their names
do not appear on a subsequent list of confirmed emigrants.
William Laurie
Goudie
(1799-1863) married Elizabeth Macarthur (also 1799-1863) in 1822 and
raised a family of 7 children at 49 High Street, Paisley -

It is known
that a branch of Margaret's (m Brierly) family emigrated to New Jersey, USA whilst a
branch of William's (m Lockhart) family emigrated to Queensland and then NSW in
1910.
Members
of this family were still residing in Paisley until well into the 20th
century.
