Johannes Lanz
Johannes "John" Lanz was born on 28 August 1831 in Hessen - Darmstadt, Germany .2,3

Research Note regarding immigration:
2 July 2003 - I have yet to find John on any passenger list and have not been successful in finding where in Hesse Darmstadt John was born.
He immigrated to Wellesley, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, arriving circa 1847 from Germany, family story states that John came to Wellesley when he was 16.4
Marriage banns for Johannes "John" Lanz and Catherina Schick were published between January 1855 and July 1855 in Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada.5
Between January 1855 and July 1855, Johannes "John" Lanz married Catherina Schick, daughter of John Schick and Catherine Wolf, in Berlin, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. I have not yet determined if Catherine' parents are indeed John and Catherine Schick. The marriage date is based on the birth of their daughter Katherine in April 1856 and the marriage bann..5,6,7,8
On 9 March 1859, Johannes "John" Lanz purchased property located in Concession 9 Lot 6, in the township of Normanby, Grey County, Ontario, Canada, The land was purchased from John Martz.9

Research Note for property purchased on 9 Mar 1859:
1999 - I don't believe that the John Lanz who purchased the property on Document 14232 is this John Lanz. I found a John Lanz age 54 born in Germany living on this property in the 1881 Census. Johannes is living in Nebraska at this time. More research is needed to establish who this John Lanz is and what family he belongs to.
On the 1861 Census in North Easthope, Perth, Ontario, Canada,, Johannes was listed as the head of the family. Catherina Lanz, Katharine "Katie" Lanz, Henry Lanz, George Reinmiller and Henry Reinmiller were listed as household members. The census has the surname of the household as LANCE.10 Johannes's occupation was a Farmer on the census.10 and the religion of Johannes's household is stated to be Lutheran.10

Research note for 1861 Census:
30 December 2007- I am not sure why the Rinemiller boys are living with John and Catherine in the 1861 census . Also in the household is Henry Hoffman, born in Germany, age 14.
1. Who is Henry Hoffmanwith the family? Is he related?
Need to check to find in further Census.
2. Are the Rinemiller boys the nephew of Catherine? Eva Schick married John Reinmiller. Are they Sisters?

On 3 July 1863, Johannes purchased property located in Concession 10 Lot 1 N ½, in the township of Normanby, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. The land was purchased from John Stessmer.11

Research Notes for property purchased 3 Jul 1863:
2 July 2003 -the buyer of the property probably isn't Johannes because this John Lanz is still living here in 1881 and Johannes is living with his family in Jefferson County Nebraksa. See previous Research Note for further discussion.
In 1864, Johannes "John" Lanzowned property located in Concession 9 Lot 14 E1/2, in the township of North Easthope, Perth County, Ontario, Canada. In 1860, John Rymillar owned the W1/2 of the Lot.12
