This chart may be extended in either direction for identifying more distant relationships.

Instructions:
1.Identify the common ancestor of the two people. Locate the box in the upper left corner for the common ancestor.
2.Across the top row of the chart, find the relationship of one of the two people to their common ancestor.
3.Down the left edge of the chart, find the relationship of the second person to their common ancestor.
4.Read down the column of the first person and across the row of the second person. Where the column and row intersect is the box which identifies the relationship.
Example:
1.The (hypothetical) common ancestor is John Smith.
2.Mary is the great-great-granddaughter of John, four generations away from him. Read down the left column to #4.
3.Sam is the grandson of John, two generations away from him. Read across the top row to #2.
4.Column #4 and row #2 intersect at the box which reads "1 Cousin 2R", or first cousin two generations removed. Mary and Sam are first cousins twice removed.
