Fomer Johnson County resident Cecil Stapleton, 80, of Westwood, died
Monday, October 16, 2000, at King’s Daughters’ Medical Center in Ashland.
Born Apr. 17, 1920, in Chandlersville, he was a son of the late Shadrick
and Bunie Chandler Stapleton.
He was a retired UMWA miner from Princess-Elkhorn
and Peabody Coal Companies. He was a member of the
Chandlersville Lodge #858 F&AM, and a member of the George’s Creek United Baptist Church.
Mr. Stapleton carried a citation from the Prestonsburg School
Children Recovery Committee for his assistance in the recovery of
the school children who perished in the Prestonsburg school bus
accident many years ago.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Naomi Grim Stapleton, in 1994.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Daniels Cordle Stapleton; one daughter,
Doris Ann Francis, of Catlettsburg; two step-daughters, Sharon Hall of
Lexington, and Nancy Wheatley of Ashland; three step-sons, Darrell Cordle
of Letchfield, Darvin Cordle of Westwood, and Reed Cordle of Sitka; one
brother, Loran Stapleton of Ypsilanti, Michigan; one sister, Ivory Castle
of Springfield, Ohio; three grandchildren; ten step- grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 19, at 11 a.m. at the
Westwood United Baptist church with Elders Carlos Preston, Henry Counts
and Clarence Thompson Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Bellefonte
Memorial Gardens, Flatwoods.
