Stapleton PAINSTVILLE- Francis S. Stapleton, born in Johnson Co., KY., on Sept. 24, 1924, the son of Dow and Alka Mayo (Auxier) Stapleton. During his childhood he was called Buster, later shortened to "Bus". He served his country in the South Pacific as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. Bus attended the University of Kentucky where he received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees. He was a high school teacher and guidance counselor in Kentucky and Ohio. Bus married Bonnie Reed on April 5, 1946. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in April of this year. He is survived by his devoted wife, Bonnie; children, Brenda Pappas (Charlie) of Ft. Meyers, FL, Michael Stapleton (Susan) of St. Louis MO., and Sheila Trent (Robert) of Georgetown; six grandchildren, Rebecca Caldwell (Greg), Amy Howard, Carey Scott (Eric), Shelley Wells (Robert), Francis Stapleton (Cheesa) and Molly Trent; three great-grand- children, Melody, Becky Sue and Elijah. Bus is also survived by his brother, Johnny Carson Stapleton and his sister, Garnet Gay Goble, as was as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. A daughter, Bonnie Susan Howard, granddaughter, Sarah Howard, and sister, Mary Lou Draughn, preceded him in death. He was an exceptional husband. He loved, shared and was totally faithful to his loving wife, Bonnie, for over 60 years. He protected her, defended her and was loyal and attentive. They shared a unique human bond that challenged other couples to try harder, be more patient, respect each other and to share more freely. Words cannot describe the love and compassion that Bus had for his family. He was known as "Steve", "Honey", "Daddy", "Brother", "Granddad" and "Uncle Bus". Bus lived a devout life and his words and actions reflected his dedication to the good book. Bus was a generous and patient teacher in and out of the class room who always shared advice\ and direction with others. He taught many of us to fish, golf, hunt, cook, drive, play basketball and shoot archery. He also shared his expertise in photography, wood working, building and gardening. Through his guidance, Bus showed us to love, commit to relationships, take responsibility, share and care for our fellow man. He was a respected leader who always encouraged and expected everyone to do his or her best. Bus loved the arts: theatre, classical music, poetry and art history. He loved to visit with his family and enjoyed family reunions. Bus could often be found visiting with friends and family at the Stapelton Garage. In the last couple of years he enjoyed training and playing with his newest friend, Missy, his Jack Russell. Bus had a passion for basketball and in the mid 1950's became known as "Coach". He led the Flat Gap High School Basketball Team to the regional finals. After graduating from Flat Gap High School, many of his players attended various colleges and universities and some played college level. Charles Henry Osborne later played professionally for Syracuse, NY. Bus's sister recalls when he received a letter from Charles Henry while he was playing for Syracuse. He was thanking Bus for all his support, leadership and encouragement. Many of his players have continued to remain close friend with Bus. He also coached reach, cross country, little league baseball, football and golf. With his granddaughter, Molly, he later became a Monopoly and Rook coach. Bonnie suggested Bus find an activity or a hobby to keep him busy after surgery in 1995. "He was sitting here, at home, spinning his wheels" Bonnie said. He then decided to have a log cabin deconstructed and rebuilt in the back yard and continued to work on it for the next eleven years. The cabin became his hobby, library, parking lot, antiques and collectibles museum and occasionally his "dog house". Bus enjoyed socializing, sharing stories, memories and ideas. He loved people and never met a stranger. Once he came upon a man on the Mountain Parkway who had been caught in a flash flood and was cold. Bus gave him his coat. On another occasion he rescued two men from Lake Erie who had wrecked their boat. Bus was generous with his time, money and compassion. At any time, he would go out of his way to help family, friends and neighbors with projects or chores. Hagan, his brother-in-law, summed it up by saying "He had a God given talent to be where he was needed". Bus was always thinking of other people and how to help others. Family and friends will always remember Bus as a "gently giant" who taught many valuable lessons to each of us. He was an Old Mother Hen who was protective of his chicks. His wife, Bonnie, noted that he never joined a church or became affiliated with any organized religious group. She said "He loved to talk of the wonders of God's creation. As the seasons changes and the mountains became a fire of color, he would say ‘The Master Painter is with us today'." Over the years he told several family members, including Bonnie, that he had settled it all with God and that some day he would be with us all in Heaven. "We will see him again when we get to Heaven. That will be a glorious time."
