Married in Rowan Co., North Carolina, to Sarah Johnson who gave the date of marriage as June 1788 in a deposition made in 1841. At that time she also stated she was about 77 years old, placing her birth about 1764. Joshua, brother of Thomas, gave a deposition in 1844 that he had attended the wedding of Thomas and Sarah in Rowan County in the fall of 1783. Thomas moved to Tennessee and then to Kentucky. He was born Apr. 12, 1754 in Whitehaven, Cumberland, Eng., d. October 1818 in White Co., Tenn. Editor's note: The following information was provided by Mrs. Doris Estes, author of "The Whiteley Family Book" with excerpts from The Whiteley Family by Amos Nelson Whiteley, first published in 1907 and updated in 1922. Note for JOSEPH WHITELEY Jr.: Last will and testament:, dated Mar. 07, 1818 naming SALLY WHITELY, (Sp) his wife, as executrix of his estate. Sarah Whiteley was appointed Executrix on Oct. 19, 1818 in October session of Probate Court of White Co.,TN. He was buried in the family cemetery on his homestead along Eagle Creek between the Maynard Branch and Caney Fork River in Warren Co.,TN.(Located in White Co., before 1807 and now Dekalb Co., since 1837. The six graves were removed from the old cemetery by the U. S. Corps of Engineers, when the Center Hill Dam was constructed, to a ten acre plot purchased in order to move the small ceme- teries that would be covered by the lake. The Mount Holly Cemetery is located near Smithville,TN. Note for SARAH STAPLETON WHITELEY: Two gravestone markers are in Fletcher Chapel Cemetery in in Springfield,Ohio. The older grave marker was probably placed there by her son John with whom she was living at the time of her death. It reads: "IN MEMORY OF SARAH, WIFE OF JOSEPH WHITELEY DIED 24 APRIL, 1836 75 YRS. 7 MO. 1 DAY." If Sarah died 24 April 1836 at age 75 yrs. 7 mo. and 1 day as on her older headstone, her birth date would have been on 23 Sept., 1760. She would have been about 15 when she married Joseph and 16 when she had her first child, Thomas born in 1776. She would have been abt. 49/50 when her last child, Sallie was born. Amos N. Whiteley stated in his book that Sallie died at age 20 in 1830. The newer marker reads: "GREAT GRAND MOTHER SARAH STAPLETON WHITELEY,MOTHER OF JOHN WHITELEY, 1754-1836". This last headstone was placed on the grave by a great grand- child, probably by George Whiteley, son of Joseph and Mary A. (Hempleman) Whiteley, grandson of John and Kitty (Hall) Whiteley as well as his parents graves. Sarah's death age for these dates would be abt. 82 years old. She would have been abt. 22 years old when first son, Thomas was born, but she would have been abt. 56/57 in 1810 when, according to Amos' book, the daughter Sallie was born in 1810, which is highly unlikely. The first headstone is believed to be correct. (Source: Doris Estes, author of The Whiteley Family book.) Children of SARAH STAPLETON and JOSEPH WHITELEY are: i. THOMAS 3 WHITELEY, b. 1776.;d. He was born 1775 in Rowan Co.,NC and died 1848 in Molls Creek,Russell Co.,VA.(Source: The Salyer Family by Elisabeth L.M. Salyer). Editor's note: There is no proof that Elizabeth Stapleton married Jeremiah Salyers, only speculation. The marrage records were destroyed. While it is true that Jeremiah Sr.'s wife's name was Elizabeth, her surname was unknown. While Elizabeth's birth and death dates, and her birth and death place do coincide with that of Jeremiah's wife, it must remain speculation because there is no actual proof. Note for JEREMIAH SALYER Sr.: He was born ABt. 1775, probably while the family was living on Anderson Creek in what was then Rowan Co.,NC. He died in 1848 on Moll's Creek in Russell Co.,VA.(Source: The Salyer Family by Elisabeth L. M. Salyer). Children of ELIZABETH STAPLETON and JEREMIAH SALYER: i. DAVID 3 DANIEL SALYER,b. Abt. 1800;d.
