Hi there!
Great to see the Carstarphen's ( and Corstorphine's ) have a
home page.
My name is James Corstorphine. I live in Leven, Fife, Scotland
with my wife Elizabeth ant two children Jennifer and David.
I was born and brought up in Cellardyke, Fife, Scotland, where
I can trace the Corstorphine name back to about the mid 1700's.
If any Carstarphens or Corstorphines think they may be related,
or if they would like to know more about the Corstorphine's
of Cellardyke, please feel free to E
Mail me.
The Corstorphine's who lived in Cellardyke were almost all sailors
and fishermen until my father's generation. I am the 4th Great
Grand Nephew of a sailor named Thomas Watson. The following
tale about Thomas Watson and his family ( Thomas's Neice married
David Corstorphine in 1833) might be of interest:
Thomas Watson served aboard HMS Ardent during the early 1800's.
In those days, sailors wives were allowed to go to sea with
their husbands and Thomas's wife, Mary Buick, gave birth to
Mary Watson at sea during the Battle of Copenhagen.
All three ( Thomas, Mary and Mary junior) then served aboard
HMS Victory, where Mary Buick laid out the body of Admiral Horatio
Nelson. The following is an extract from the book "Kilrenny
and Cellardyke" by Harry Watson:
"And so it came about that Thomas and Mary Watson were
serving aboard HMS Ardent in the spring of 1801 when she was
ordered to join in the historic attack on Copenhagen under Admiral
Sir Hyde Parker and his second in command, Vice Admiral Lord
Nelson.
On April 2nd, at about half past ten in the morning, there began
what Nelson himself, dodging flying splinters on the quarter
deck of the Elephant, summed up as the most terrific of all
the 103 engagements he had been in. On being told of Parker's
signal to cease action and withdraw,
Nelson jokingly put his telescope to his blind eye, and entered
the realm of popular mythology.
When the smoke of battle cleared, about 3 o'clock that afternoon,
the Ardent's losses totalled 31 men killed and 68 wounded. Incredibly,
as the shore batteries in Kattegat pounded the old warship's
wooden sides, Mary Watson went into labour and gave birth to
a baby daughter, Mary Watson Junior.
Fifty years later during the 1851 census of Kilrenny, little
Mary Watson - now Mrs John Campbell of John Street, Cellardyke
- would give her place of birth as "Aboard HMS Ardent,
64 gun ship, at sea".
Later, the little family were transferred to Nelson's new flagship,
the Victory, just in time to take part in the Battle of Trafalgar.
While Thomas Watson took charge of a gun crew, and his wife
tended to the wounded and dying, little Mary Watson was sent
below in the care of another Cellardyke man, Malcolm McRuvie;
and when Nelson succumbed to his fatal wound it was Thomas Watson's
wife Mary Buick who was called on to help prepare the corpse
for the embalmers".

Rose,
I wonderfully came across the Carstarphen home page doing some
research on my family. I am the Southern California regional commissioner
for Clan Forrester. Of course, the Carstarphen family are a "sept"
of Clan Forrester and centuries ago there was intermarriage between
our families as everyhone started from the small village of Corstorphine.
First
of all, your site looks GREAT!!! Nicely done. Part of my duties
are to host a clan table at various Scottish events and games
in my area. I have taken the liberty of downloading and printing
a few of your pages so that if anyone with your family name(s)
stops by my booth I will have information to give them that is
specific to the Corstorphine family. I will also send them to
your site for more info and a connection.
Also,
I'd like to mention that I have a picture of the village church
from Corstorphine. It's the Old Parrish and dates back about 600
years. If you think you could use this recent picture (for web
site and such) I'd be happy to send it to you as a JPEG or PICT
- whatever. My son, Andrew, and I visited the church for Sunday
service this past January 2, 2000. This was the first Sunday of
the Millennium and to sit and have service in the family church,
well, it was special. This is also the church that would be of
very special importance to Carstarphen's too. Our ancestors would
have worshipped in this same parish together.
All
that to say, Rose, let me know, and feel free to "connect." Again,
your page looks good. if you know of any Carstarphen's or Corstorphine's
in either California or Arizona, send them our way. We'd love
to invite them to a local festival or games and have them visit
our clan tent. My personal web site listed below in the info.
Yours
aye,
Craig Forrest
