HICKLING FAMILIES

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE ORIGINS

GENERATION 1    GENERATION 2    GENERATION 3

These pages are a summary of research into my great, great grandfather's family.  The purpose is to provide the information as a resource for others and to hopefully find other genealogists who could add to it.

The Hickling surname originates from the fenlands of Norfolk, with branches later settling in the Midlands area around Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and South Derbyshire.  In the late 19th Century, it was a relatively uncommon surname outside these areas.

William Hickling was baptised in the village of Papplewick, Nottinghamshire, in 1814.  He moved to the High Peak district of Derbyshire sometime before 1838, when he married in Glossop.  He was a cotton carder for most - if not all - of his working life.  He later settled in the Tameside area, around Hyde, where most of his descendants raised their families.

This research is ongoing and I would appreciate any comments, amendments or further information.  I can be contacted at 7uppdi4@omne.uk.net but please omit the 7 at the start of the address.
