In September, 1813, he enlisted in Captain McIntyre's company at Oppe nheim, N. Y., and went to Sackett's Harbor. He was one of a guard t o escort some prisoners to Albany, N. Y., and was discharged at Sacke tt's Harbor, in November of the same year. In December ensuint, he w ent to Henrietta, where he married. After the birth of two childre n he moved to Warrenvill, in Cauahoga county, Ohio. In May, 1829, h e heard Sidney Rigdon preach what was there known as the Rigdonite do ctrine. "After hearing him go through the principle of baptism for t he remission of sins I went forward and was baptized by his hands ami dst the scorn and derision of some one hundred people, and thus beca me a bold fearless defender of the Rigdonite doctrine". His wife wh o had previously been a Presbyterian was baptized with others in th e following August, by the same hand. "I now began to look at the do ctrine of the Apostles pretty closely, especially the second chapte r of the Acts, where they had all things in common. In conformity wi th this covenant I went to Kirtland about twenty miles, to see Brothe rs J. Morley and Billings. After consideration we entered into a cov enant to make our interests one as anciently. In conformity with thi s covenant I moved the next February to Kirtland, into the house wit h Brother Morley. We commenced our labors together with great peac e and union. We were soon joined by eight other families. Out labor s were united both in farming and mechanism, all of which were prosec uted with great vigor. While preparing to establish a branch organiz ation in an adjoining town, four men came along, namely, Parley P. Pr att, Oliver Cowdery, Peter Whitmer, Ziba Peterson, and brought with t hem the book of Mormon, which they wished to introduce to us...
