Volunteered at Wrenthem about May 1, 1775, with Captain Oliver Pond i n Colonel Joseph Read's regiment for eight months. He was continue d in the service by successive re-enlistments until November 1779, wh en he was taken prisoner and kept in confinement at New York until No vember 1780. Being exchanged he re-enlisted ad was discharged as a c orporal after four years service. He was present, it is stated, at t he battle of Bunker Hill, and at the surrender of Burgoyne. I am als o informed that Joseph Witht was an assistant surgeon on shipboard a t some period during the war where he learned to perform simple surgi cal operations. During his later life he was a practicing physicia n of the herbalist school, and is distinguished by his descendants a s Dr. Joseph.spouse: Mann, Olive (1764 - 1867)
