My beginning research started with Wendolin (Wenzel) Schumann, GGGrandfather (b.abt. 1820). There are various spellings of Wendolin such as Wenderlin, Venderlin, Vendelin and Valentine, as with the Schumann name Shuman, Schuman, and Shumann. What information I've received from the "cousins" regarding the spelling of the Schumann name; the spelling is with two (2) n's not one.
As for Wendolin's life he came to America from Bavaria, Germany, and settled in the Midwest. He married Thirese Stierstoffer, (many different spellings of her last name Sterstoffel) they had 7 children. The family lived in Chicago, Cook County, IL from about 1856 to 1868. Frank (1846-1925), Antonia (1859-1940), Joseph (1864-1926), John (1865-), Eva (1868-1946) were born in Illinois, Theresa, (1871-1878), Aloysius (1872-1952) was born in Minnesota.
The 1862 City Directory, Cook County has Wenderlin listed as a Laborer.
The 1860 census from Cook County, Illinois has Wendolin age 36, Theresa age 33, Antonia, age 2, Joseph, infant and Franz, age 4. Wendolin's occupation was Distiller.
The 1880 census has the family in Helena, Scott county, MN.
The 1890 Census.
The 1895 Census has Wendolin and Theresa in Long Prairie, Todd county, Minnesota.
The 1900 Census has Theresa.
The 1910 Census has Theresa living with Eva & Paul Oldenburg in Long Prairie, MN (Todd County).
The 1920 Census has Theresa.
Wendolin died April 8, 1899, Fawn Lake, Minnesota. He is buried in Long Prairie, MN, St. Mary of Mount Carmel Cemetery. Theresa Schumann (b. Feb. 26, 1825 - d. April 26, 1920) born Bavaria, Germany, died in an Old Folks Home in Little Falls, MN and is buried in the local cemetery there.
(Please note the dates of births and deaths do vary from newspaper accounts to death certificates. Some dates are verifiable but others are not due to the loss of records due to fires.)
