The first information that I have on the Higdon Family in NC is Leonard Higdon Sr. who is said to have migrated from Maryland. Leonard was born abt. 1738, place unknown. Some of his descendant's settled into Macon County, NC and others can be traced to Georgia. One of the most well known of the NC Higdon's is Major William Huffman Higdon who was born in Burke County on September 14, 1816. He was the oldest child of Leonard Higdon Jr. and Eva Hoffman(Huffman). He acquired much land in Macon County and served in the military during the Civil War. After the war, he operated a general store as well as a flour and corn mill on Ellijay Creek. The Higdon's were very active in politics. Major Higdon served as sheriff of Macon County in the 1880's. He died on May 5, 1903 in Higdonville and was buried in the Sugar Fork Baptist Church Cemetery in Macon County.
