Compiled by Peggy B. Chapman, September, 1998
I have a copy of South Carolina 1800 Census published 1973 by Accelerated Indexing Systems, Provo, Utah. I began to read this census in 1991 to determine neighbors of the Cockrums and noted that AIS read Chesley Cockrum as Chuley Cockrum. Chesley had migrated from Wilkes Co., NC and when I examined 1782 Wilkes County, North Carolina Tax List, published by The Genealogical Society of the "Original" Wilkes County, (196_), I noted many families found in Greenville, Pendleton and Laurens Districts seemed to have migrated from Wilkes Co. i.e. Anderson,Baker,Barton,Chandlor,Cleveland,Cocrum [Cockerham], Coffee,Couch,Crane,Crisp,Denman,Dobbs,Duncan,Dier,Edwards,Ellege,Griffin,Hall, Henderson,Hooper, Isbell, Jennings,Jordan,Keese,Kerby,Merritt,Montgomery,Morris,Norman,Pinion [Pinnell],Pinson,Poor,Upchurch,Reese,Reynolds,Roberts,Robins,Russell,Rice,Summerlin,Sutherlin, Sawyer,Sparks, Sloan,Stepp, Turner,Toney,West & Yeargin. My ancestors Pendleton Isbell, Elijah Keese and Thomas Henderson were from Wilkes County thence to Pendleton and Laurens Districts. Chesley Cockrum/Cockerham's brother William, who married Thomas Henderson's daughter, may have moved to Greenville District.
