Cochran Family

To everyone researching the Cochran/Cockerham Family. I have traced my line back to the Cockran's of Greenville County, South Carolina. DNA tests taken by my brother have confirmed that this line of Cockrans originated in England by the name of Cockerham. They came to America and settled in Lunenburg County, Virginia and from there migrated to North Carolina, South Carolina, and to other points south.

My Cockerham family lived in the mountains of North Carolina for many years and some of their descendant's still live there today. There is a Cochran cemetery on a beautiful mountanside in the Alarka Community of Swain County where many of these ancestors are buried. Madison (Matthew) Cockerham , son of John and Aggey Cockran, came to Macon County, NC from Greenville County, SC where he married Mira Cockerham, daughter of John and Nancy Cockerham of Rutherford County, NC. There they raised a large family in the Alarka community. Madison and Mira are both buried in the Cochran Cemetery.

This site was started, so that I could share the information that I have gathered, in hopes of helping others who might be researching the same family. Anyone who has information that they would like to contribute can e-mail me directly at trecelco3@aol.com. I will continue to upload materials to this site as they become available. Many thanks to Peggy Chapman for her help in locating Madison's family in South Carolina. Happy hunting and blessings to all!
