"Col. Thomas W. Huey died while serving as senator for Lancaster District. His obituary in the Lancaster Ledger states that from 1833 to 1847, he was a Colonel in the South Carolina 47th Regiment. He served as a senator 1844-48, and from 1852, till his death in 1854. After the death of his first wife he married Mrs Margaret Crockett Massey by whom he had four children." *

HUEY, THOMAS WALKER (1798 - 1854)

Thomas Walker Huey, born 27 November 1798, was the son of James Huey and Jane Walker. A merchant, he resided in Lancaster District near the North Carolina boundary. He also owned undisclosed acreage in Lancaster and property in Alabama and Mississippi. According to the 1850 federal census, his real estate in Lancaster was valued at $10,000; the slave schedules for that year listed thirty-seven slaves as his property. Elected to the state Senate, Huey served Lancaster in the Thirty-sixth (1844-1845), Thirty-seventh (1846-1847, and Fortieth (1852-1853) General Assemblies. While in the Senate, he was a member of the committees on the military and pensions (1844-1847), 1852-1853) and agriculture and internal improvements (1844-1845). Other offices he held in cluded tax collector for Lancaster District (ca. 1837-1845); presidential elector (1844); commissioner for the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad Company (1846); incorporator of the Camden and Munroe Plank Road Company (1850); commissioner, to charter Lancaster Railroad Company (1852); commissioner, to approve public securities for Lancaster District (1853); militia colonel; and ruling elder of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church. On 3 April 1821, Huey married Martha Lynn McMurray, daughter of John McMurray, Jr., and Ann Harper. Ten children were born to them: Jane Minerva (m. Israel Pickens Davis), Sarah Cynthia (m. James J. Williams), Elizabeth Clementine (m. 1st John Johnston Craig, 2d N.H. Craig), Martha Harriet (m. John Harvey McMurray), Margaret Amy (m. Henry Reese Massey), Mary Agnes (m. John Newton Davis), Isabella Adeline, Louisa Elmira (m. David McKenzie Crockett), John McMurray, and James Buchanan. Martha Lynn McMurray Huey died 14 October 1841. His second wife, whom he wed 6 July 1843, was Margaret Cynthia Crockett, daughter of Andrew Crockett and Agnes Dunlap and widow of William G. Massey. They were the parents of four children: Simeon Hyder, Henrietta Amanda (m. S.C. Millen Hood), Thomas Walker, Jr. (1848-1849), and Robert Eli Alexander. Survived by his wife and ten children, Thomas Walker Huey died 23 April 1854 and was buried in Tirzah Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
