Charles F. Martin

1859-1940

The earliest record found for Charles is the 1860 Census record for Tallapoosa Co. AL, lines 11-14 on page 27A with his parents, James D. Martin and Arrinda Victoria Edmundson Martin. He is shown as age l born in Alabama and his sister Mary is age 3 born in Georgia. He was next located in the 1880 Census for Tallapoosa Co. AL lines 1-7 of page 22 with his parents and three younger brothers and one younger sister.

1900 Census of for Elmore County AL, sheet 15 lines 29-37, shows Charles, Lydia, and their seven youngest children, Ada, Claudia, James W., John T., Lonzo D., Joseph, Charley H. Their oldest child Elizabeth "Lizzie" was married in 1897.

Charles moved his family from Alabama to Louisiana in the early 1900's, then back to Alabama and then back to Louisiana around 1916.

Charles' tombstone bears a Masonic crest but no records have been found to date as to his home Lodge or where he attended.

Family stories paint "Grandpaw Charley" as a fun loving individual who was always kidding with people or playing friendly jokes on them. He has been described as the typical "Preacher's Kid" always involved in some type of mischief. It is said that Charley never worried about anything refusing to waste time and energy fretting about things he could not control. This is probably not a true picture, but is mentioned primarily because of the contrast with his wife who is reported to have been a worrier, constantly in a fret about something.
